Yes, I believe the LM could have technically landed on the moon, but the ascent stage was short-fueled. Had they landed, they wouldn't have been able to reach the command module. This was deliberate.
Also, I believe the LM computer was missing the final landing program which was still being written at the time of the flight.
They did have a problem on seperation, and it started to spin around and around.Fortunately Stafford and Cernan was able to stabilize the ascent stage quickly. If this had happened on the moon, they would have crashed and died. They returned to the command module named Charlie Brown.
It was a massive screw up and it's astounding that Cernan was awarded another lunar mission. A switch was out of position that caused the LM to look for the CM along its forward axis when it should be holding its position. The onboard transcript reveals Cernan with his head out the cockpit too much and bitching constantly about the cameras when he should have had his head on the checklist. Stafford should have reined him in and didn't. Young would not let Duke out of line on 16.
Yes the Lunar module called Snoopy would have been able to land on the moon. However it was designed and built before they started the weight saving program for the LEM's and as such it probably would have been too heavy to launch successfully from the lunar surface. The astronauts would have been stuck on the moon with no hope of getting back. Sort of an one way ticket.
I always wondered if it was technically possibel for Apollo 10 to land on the surface of the moon? Or was this mission the simply the last check before going the whole way with Apollo 11?
They didn't put enough fuel in the LM to land since it wasn't planned for a landing.Apollo 10 was a last test of the lunar module before a landing.

Here we see N.A.S.A.'s giant moon ball, built at a cost of 2 million dollars and quickly destroyed after the Apollo missions.
