Everytime I hear him play, I feel like picking up the violin and start practicing. I do not know what magic he spins but Nobody past or present sounds like him

Leonid Kogan is one of my violin heroes. But, alas, he never mastered neither the barroque nor the classical repertoire, specially regarding style. IMHO

Do you think that Karl Richter would record 6 sonatas of Bach for violin and harpsichord with fellow, who 'never mastered neither the barroque nor the classical repertoire'. One could agree or not with Kogan's interpretation of classical repertoire. E.g., probably nobody in times of Mozart played with such a rich and intensive sound. But no one professionals never claimed that Kogan lacked an appropriate style in classical repertoire.
