Unfair taxes? Tyranny? Unfair Laws? Injustice? Any good modern historian will tell you that these charges, levelled at the British are wholly inaccurate. They were by no means perfect, but these accusations are too far. One third of the colonists were pro British, one third apathetic and the other third Revolutionary. Taxes for the British were roughly 25 shillings annually, in contrast to 1 to 2 shillings for the colonists. Don't attack me for being British, because I'm also an Historian.

Unfair taxes? England saved colonists' asses and asked that they pay for the expense. Propaganda aside, the Tyrrany was that King George III had huge bills to pay and needed colonists to pay their fair share. Oppression? That came after colonists refused to obey their government (Remember, they were loyal British subjects at the time.) Injustice? You mean destroying private property (tea) because you are asked to contribute to the mother country? We Americans are dumb when we believe in lies.
Good job, liberal. Set the record straight. It's about time someone fought back against the lies. Especially near July4 when they're piled on thick and hot. From the beginning we were a selfish people who wouldn't pay our fair share. Greed is our real founding principle. We should have loved our King, not rebelled like ingrate children. Jefferson's list of grievances in the Declaration is a sham. The whole thing is a sham. Only socialism can tell the true story of America.
one tiny word, "God" gets liberals panties in a bunch when the whole cartoon went into why we have a pledge to begin with....BTW, God was mention in the part of Lincoln's Gettysberg address....OH THE HORROR!
This was originally released in July 1939 {this version is a 1952 "Blue Ribbon" reissue- but the original closing title is featured at the end: one of the rare occasions the phrase "That's All, Folks!" was not used}. Chuck Jones directed this one- John Deering is the voice of "Uncle Sam".
first to initiate the addition of "under God" to the Pledge. On February 7, 1954, with President Eisenhower "there was something missing in the pledge, and that which was missing was the characteristic and definitive factor in the American way of life." He cited Lincoln's words "under God" as defining words that set the United States apart from other nations.
I always loved this cartoon ever since I was kid. Some people here are missing the whole purpose of the cartoon...it's stating the importance of saying the Pledge...why is Paul Revere not shouting "The British are Coming!" so important...obviously MOST of you know he said that and everyone during the era of this cartoon release also learned that he said that so not having it in this cartoon is not a big deal.
@USAFBrat84 "The British are Coming!" Is not depicted in the cartoon because the truth is that Revere never shouted those words on his ride.
After Reveres' death, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, attributed that phrase to what Mr. Revere was shouting, thus making Paul Revere, as well as the phrase he never uttered, famous.
@markisb62 I was responding to everyone else who was wondering why it wasn't in the cartoon. Stating that him not saying "THE BRITISH ARE COMING!" was not of importance the importance of the cartoon was the history of America. Everyone knows that Revere said that famous quote but it not being said in the cartoon wasn't a big deal.
@USAFBrat84 Hi, you said... "Everyone knows that Revere said that famous quote"....
Perhaps you didn't pay close attention when you read my response, or it just flew completely over your head. Once again lets review your statement... "Everyone knows that Revere said that famous quote"...
I'm sorry sir, but everyone does NOT know Revere made that quote. Why? Because he NEVER made it!!
It would be more accurate if you said "everyone THINKS Revere made that quote"... thanks =)
The answer to those who doubt that Paul Revere did NOT say "The British are coming!" is that the colonists at that time considered THEMSELVES British, so it would have sounded as if they were being warned that they were being warned of an invasion...from themselves.
Most likely, Revere actually shouted "to arms," as shown in this cartoon, or "the regulars are coming," or "the redcoats are coming."
You are absolutely correct about one thing, it WASN'T important that the cartoon didn't have the quote "the British are coming" in it. It would in fact be worse if the quote HAD been included, and that is because Paul Revere NEVER uttered that phrase during his famous ride. That 'so-called' quote was conjured up by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in some of his American History poetry works, AFTER Paul Revere had died.
@markisb62 Longfellow's poem, "Paul Revere's Ride," while inaccurate as to the event, doesn't quote the line you find so offensive. Blame it on someone else.
In the depiction of Paul Revere's ride, instead of the familiar tale of warning "The British are coming" it "To arms, to arms" - Warner Bros. wants to mention oppression without mentioning who is doing the oppressing. The "special relationship" with Britain must have been in place. And when the US govt opted to clear the Indians off of their land, it's depicted only as bravery in this cartoon, with the only hint of Indians presence in the westward expansion was the stereotypical Indian music.
@LordoftheJimmy The British are mysteriously not even mentioned at all. The source of the "oppression, injustice, unfair taxation" is omitted from this tale entirely, as is the oppression inflicted by the "gallant pioneers".
@Cyallaire This cartoon is obviously propaganda at a time when WWII was heating up. I think the producers wanted to preserve our alliance with England by not mentioning the British. And yes, we practically wiped out the Native Americans (Sam forgets to tell Porky that part).
Still, for kids at 3 or 4 years old, this cartoon is a good introduction to American History, and The Paul Revere segment is exciting, certainly much more accurate that Sarah Palin's recollection.
uncle SAM is nothing more than a European zeitgeist deceptively wrapped in American garb teaching american values like loyalty to the state first, the willingness to serve the elites and die for them
it wasn't religion but socialism and loyalty to the state that lead to both world wars in Europe, Americans with a godly standing from 1900-1945 wanted to stay out of both wars, the socialist Euros should have killed themselves why the hell did we interfere
You know what reading these comments made me aware of how DUMB Americans are today.. Out of this whole cartoon the ONLY thing being disscussed i when Under God was added to OUR pledge! HINT OPPRESSION, UNFAIR TAXES, TYRANNY, UNFAIR LAWS, INJUSTICE!!!! Doesnt anyone see HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF??
@stucat06 Bullfearthers, I voted for Obama and voted a thumbs up on this. And notice there's NO "under god" in this pledge. that's because it was done before 1954. We need to return to the religion neutral version because as diverse as we are now, we worship different gods or no god at all.
@LordDragon1965 I was just kidding about the Vote for Obama. I have dear friends who got caught up in the hoopla and love their country. About the God in the Pledge, I knew that. I also didnt bring that up. Hey, Its a cartoon that is informative and entertaining. I try to leave religion out of any argument, there is no solution or end of the argument.
This still doesn't tell us why we need to know the pledge. The pledge is just words, nothing more. Not saying it does not make you a traitor and saying it does not make you a patriot. Actions should have much more significance. This is just propaganda for children.Try not paying taxes now, see what the government does.
@ObscureDEG in 1954....under McCarthy the congress signed it to law.....to ad the words "Under God"...........it is sad that in 2002.....5 or so states ruled the "Pledge" unconstitutional be cause of the phrase
"under God".....that is a sign of these times.....
for the "brats" dont and havent seen this for decades.....
since the schools became over funded houses of liberal progressive indoctrination......yet...
today they are all you have said and more...because of multiculturalism (teaches kids to be what there ancestors were)...african hate the whites, asian grocer and hispanics.....hispanic hate them all back...
- "this should be mandatory for all kids to watch in all schools......"
No, this kind of "patriotism" (i.e. misplaced pride in happening to be born somewhere) is just stupid. In fact, it's just as stupid as believing in a "god" that was simply made up by a bunch of primitive superstitious deert dwellers from the bronze age. This kind of indoctrination and brainswashing is reminiscent of the Hitler Youth and Jesus Camp--both utterly disgusting. Such things should be banned.
@Prophiscient ...?have (obviously) none of you Constitution-Founding Father-God Hating people seen the school curriculum these days?.....God and this love of Country thing virtually has been banned.....my kids are taught the Founding Fathers were a "bunch of slave owners that didnt want to pay there taxes".....hence my words "should be"....you all have your wish....now reap your rewards......or consequences....
Okay, just so who ever the heck is wondering can be clear about this "under God" issue, that phrase was not always in the pledge. It wasn't actually inserted until 1948 by Louis Bowman. This cartoon was created in 1939.
Watching this on a Looney Tunes collection right now with my 5yo. We'll watch again & talk about it tomorrow, I think (getting too late tonight to have much impact). This is a great cartoon.
Uncle Sam did utter the words "Under God", so the thought was there, if not the actual verbage in the pledge.

Okay, good. Correct copyright, COPYRIGHT MCMXXXIX. I had thought that a MCMXLV 1945 Copyright date had replaced it. I've seen this with original titles and the That'[s all folks script title is written as the music plays, just like in the end t-t-t-title.
Wow. You should be a policeman. If my remark made made in good faith made you that hostile imagine what you would do to criminals like J-walkers if you had a pistol. We need you in Washington DC to slap those pesky democrats with a heavy copy of the US constitution.
In short, people like you collect insults like trophies and would serve a better purpose if you swatted flies in a shithouse.
@taxigringo "under God" want added to the pledge of alliegiance until 1954. This video was made long before then. Before you go bat shit crazy criticising the catroon, learn something about the nation you are supposed to be a citizen of. Stop complaining and prostelatizing to a bunch of people who just wanna see some fuckin' Porky Pig...
Yeah fine americans, get your free national security and imports from the UK, and as soon as the British GVT realise you arent coughing up your share, its called "unfair taxes" and oppression.
@yourabumhole If the colonies weren't paying enough to cover security from England, why did England fight to keep them? Should have just cut them loose. Fact was resource rich America was a cash cow for England.
You Brits didn't seem to mind the munitions we sent in the 30's when Hitler was ramming his staff in Europe's posterior and had it squarely aimed at England. You also didn't seem to mind the thousands of Americans who crossed the Atlantic to fight and die over England and Europe.
My favorite Looney Tune of all time. The only thing I'd change is when Porky says the Pledge of Allegiance, he'd say it correctly. "...One nation....UNDER GOD..."
@Rosebud3403 I'm not sure the exact year this was made, but "under God" wasn't added to the Pledge until 1954. The version Porky said is likely correct.
"Warner bros,. did not mention that in this episode because they wanted america to like the best, strongest country in the whole wide world when in l real life, it is stolen, economy very low, broke, at war andjust a plain miserble country. "
And yet it is still a better place than whatever hatehole spawned the likes of you.
@schizoidboy I just watched this again in memory of that day. They showed this on cartoon network first it was on earlier before the attacks then on again later. All the same seeing this with that part with the Spirit of 76 being shown was just earth shaking to me. It still is.

@Cyallaire
Yes, this cartoon is part of the great imperialist/corporatist conspiracy to brainwash the American people.
Someone alert Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. Only they can save us.

@strangerinwhite
I was hoping the sarcasm would be obvious.
1Doz 6 months ago
Hmmm, I don't see anything of Paul Revere in this cartoon warning the British of anything...
LordoftheJimmy 7 months ago
@LordoftheJimmy The British are mysteriously not even mentioned at all. The source of the "oppression, injustice, unfair taxation" is omitted from this tale entirely, as is the oppression inflicted by the "gallant pioneers".
Cyallaire 7 months ago
@Cyallaire This cartoon is obviously propaganda at a time when WWII was heating up. I think the producers wanted to preserve our alliance with England by not mentioning the British. And yes, we practically wiped out the Native Americans (Sam forgets to tell Porky that part).
Still, for kids at 3 or 4 years old, this cartoon is a good introduction to American History, and The Paul Revere segment is exciting, certainly much more accurate that Sarah Palin's recollection.
LordoftheJimmy 7 months ago
nothing American about uncle SAM
uncle SAM is nothing more than a European zeitgeist deceptively wrapped in American garb teaching american values like loyalty to the state first, the willingness to serve the elites and die for them
it wasn't religion but socialism and loyalty to the state that lead to both world wars in Europe, Americans with a godly standing from 1900-1945 wanted to stay out of both wars, the socialist Euros should have killed themselves why the hell did we interfere

@stucat06 Bullfearthers, I voted for Obama and voted a thumbs up on this. And notice there's NO "under god" in this pledge. that's because it was done before 1954. We need to return to the religion neutral version because as diverse as we are now, we worship different gods or no god at all.
LordDragon1965 9 months ago 4

It is a supreme irony that they had to divide "one nation indivisible" in order to shove "under God" in there. And it's still divided.

Okay, good. Correct copyright, COPYRIGHT MCMXXXIX. I had thought that a MCMXLV 1945 Copyright date had replaced it. I've seen this with original titles and the That'[s all folks script title is written as the music plays, just like in the end t-t-t-title.

yourabumhole 1 year ago
@yourabumhole If the colonies weren't paying enough to cover security from England, why did England fight to keep them? Should have just cut them loose. Fact was resource rich America was a cash cow for England.
You Brits didn't seem to mind the munitions we sent in the 30's when Hitler was ramming his staff in Europe's posterior and had it squarely aimed at England. You also didn't seem to mind the thousands of Americans who crossed the Atlantic to fight and die over England and Europe.
