Most Wokou are actually not Japanese, although there are a significant numbers of them from Kyushu, many of them are actually Chinese merchants. Wokou is just a general term to describe the pirates operating in the Chinese seas during the 1200-1600s. The Chinese National hero Koxinga himself is actually a Wokou, as he too is a pirate merchant (although he should be noted as a privateer given his actions are licensed by the Ming gov) active during that time.
