"Israelites" reached #9 on the Billboard Top 40 chart June 7, 1969 and stayed on the chart for seven weeks. It was the only recording that ever charted for Desmond Dekker & The Aces. Probably the first Reggae tune ever widely heard in America, listeners did not know it was Reggae.

Actually, Desmond Dekker's "The Israelites" is a ska tune. Ska gave birth to reggae, and not vice versa.

Though the two are often confused, it was a decade before the ska bluebeat was slowed to a reggae pace.

This came out in '69. Toots and the Maytals' "Do the Reggay" was in '68 and that was the first time anyone had used that name to describe the music, but it was not by any means the first reggae song. I consider this to be a reggae song, though i have seen him perform it with a ska "bluebeat" and also with more of a rocksteady feel. Awesome tune either way, it just gets my soul every time.
