All VR6s in N.America got 172hp, except for Corrados, they got 178hp cuz of different exhaust manifold, higher-flow cat, and 1/4" wider exhaust pipes all the way to back.... squeezed another 6hp from engine.

not true. the n/a spec corrados had the strongest 12v vr6 in the lineup at 178 bhp...while the gti's put out 172bhp. While both 2.8l, for some reason the vw beefed up the corrado a bit.
The Corrado and the GTi are both US spec and have the same engine, 2.8L 174HP, and transmission. I am the driver of the black GTI VR6. The GTi is bone stock, and the Corrado has exhaust and a GIAC chip. I did leave the line a little better as I didn't spin the 5hit out of the tires while leaving the line. We are pretty even on the highway though, but I still slowly walk away from him. His car is heavier I believe.

Im pretty sure it would be very close as there is VERY little between them. If they are both the 2.8VR6 then the golf has 150hp per tonne and the corrado has 143hp per tonne, but if the corrado has the 2.9VR6 then it will have 157hp per tonne. But honestly There is nothing between them. I think it would come down to the driver.

That VR6 synchro isn't all its craked up to be. I have a Euro Corrado and Euro Golf VR6 as I live in Holland. The Golf is a wallowy understreeing brute that is carrying far too much weight as the 4 wheel drive sytem weighs alot......The corrado does beat its pants..
