Thank you for this video! A concern I've always had about this field is client wishy-washiness. Have you had many situations where clients receive your work and then respond with something like, "Now that I see it all laid out, this isn't quite what I'm looking for... I don't know exactly what I want, but something different from this..." How do you handle situations like that?
@VocalVerve If you're talking about writing 'on spec' then I don't do that. Once I'm writing for someone this means that they've already paid at least 50% down, so I can't see how I can have that unfortunate situation. Yet when you are first starting out some businesses would try those tricks on you that they know they cannot try on a more experienced copywriter.
Great video! I've decided to be come a copywriter. I would like to work from home also. I'm finishing my degree in English. I'm an African American woman, and I love to write. I've been writing spec ads just to get a feel for it. I don't have a huge desire to work for a company. Are spec ads a good way to practice?
Great video. I to am trying to figure out a career path. I have been graphic designing for the last few years and once I started learning about copywriting, I decided to dig deeper. Thanks for your insight.
I appreciate your video. I have also been told by previous professors that I write well but never took the opportunity to follow up. As with all things, it is scary just getting started. but you make it seem possible. Thanks.
Al I can say is, "Go for it!" The type of writing that your professor was thinking of may be a little different from writing advertising copy but you have a platform to launch from.
I'm coming to the end of a degree in graphic design and although my skills as a designer are strong I've been told that my written and linguistic talents are exceptional. I do enjoy writing more than anything else, so I think a career in copywriting could be perfect for me. I'm hoping that my knowledge of design elements such as grid systems and typography should help me along the way. Thanks for such an inspirational video!
The filed is wide open and once you love writing then it will be a no-brainer for you. Although copywriting can seem a little anti-academic in terms of style of writing.
Fantastic! Thank you for all the info. I'm in the process of figuring out possible careers I'd like to pursue. The information given in this video has been very enlightening for me!
Like any type of business the launching burns most of the fuel, but once you put your mind to it you can join the ranks of those who write for the big bucks.
Well done Ray I'm adding your videos to Tiny University

Better to write real ads and test them using Pay-Per-Click advertising like Google Adwords.
You don't have to write ads that you won't use and you can test these ads cheaply to find out what works.

If you truly want to be a copywriter further your studies in advertising copywriting... it is completely different than being an English major.

You may also specialize in graphic design for direct marketers. Not many graphic designers understand the special needs of copywriters.

Thanks for the information. Do you have any courses you would recommend? I was thinking of taking a AWAI online course.
