The real story behind this shambles of a defeat is funny. Was just after the 0-0 in Leichtenstein and the team were traing in Limerick while Jack went to check the Portugal - Northern Ireland game. Most of the squad were on the serious piss for 3 days. I worked in a bar/club back then and can remember watching NBA with at least 7 of em at 5am for afterhours. They went mad that week.
The irony about this match is that for 75 minutes, we totally outplayed the Austrians. And then Toni Polster comes up with a few handy headed goals, totally against the run of play in the last 10 minutes. I was gutted, even more so than the Lichtenstein game! Total daylight robbery.
There's a story behind this shambles, In Back From The Brink, Paul McGraths autobiography (I would urge you to read it, its brilliant) The Irish team were travellin to training when they stopped at a fish & chip shop, I don't know if all the team done it but there was this challenge to eat a massive serving of fish & chips to win a feee dessert. After they left, they had a light training session. The next day, they play Austria. Outclassed in the end. The Jack Charlton era was ending fast
