Even if you tried to overdose on thujone you'd get alcohol poisoning before the thujone does anything to you. That's right, college students already die from binge drinking and your complaining about an herb. Absinthe is legal because of the FDA Mike, not the liberals in office. Lets blame everything on the liberals. Right? Who killed the Jews in the Holocaust. Nope, not Hitler. Guess again, it was the Obama administration. lol
@ispeaktruth100 Hahaha! Then you haven't tried the right "new stuff". And if you were actually knowledgeable on how absinthe was made using "the old ways", you would almost certainly know enough to choose a good modern absinthe.
I bet you never even had "the old stuff'. I've had several vintage absinthe superieure marques from 1880-1914. And I'm here to tell ya that modern absinthes like Pacifique, Jade, Meadow of Love, Clandestine and Belle Amie are in fact the real deal.
Absinthe is some baaaad shit. All kidding aside, I drank quite a bit one night. The next day, I felt like I got beat up, run over and dragged by a train. I wasn't right for about 3 or 4 weeks after. The real shit is poison. You're better off huffing gasoline or some paint, snort some draino... ehhh fk it... go ahead, drink a whole bottle, you're prolly some dumb shit Michael Savage rants about anyway!!!
@MyDadsRubberBroke "The real shit is poison" Ummm, no. At least not any more any other booze. Just because you bought a bottle that was labeled "absinthe" or maybe "absinth" on the label doesn't mean it's the "real shit", nor does it matter if bought it in Europe or Timbuktu. To avoid being swindled, a little research is in order before you buy a bottle.
The profile lists Savage's commentary as psychologically nude. I submit to you that it is pseudo-intellectual drivel masquerading as some kind of patriotic enlightenment. Politics aside, what say we do a little research about the subject at hand before vomiting into a microphone.
Politics in general and social conservatism in specific, the sooner closed-minded dullards like this go the way of the dodo, the better off the planet will be. The Third Reich lost, jack.
This little tirade is so full of logical fallacies (especially association fallacy) it's hilarious. Maybe the "cool kids" pelted him with pointy shoes at Berkely. Not to mention the guy's extremely poor understanding of and thujone and absinthe in general, which is based on nothing more than regurgitated 19th century pseudoscience.
Oh- and martnini's? They're made with vermouth. The very word is derived on the German spelling of WORMWOOD. Archie Bunker's smarter than who?
You sir, are completely misinformed. Look into the research.
Your facts are wrong, and you are about as big an idiot as I've ever encountered. There are many "fake" absinthes being made by czech distillers. True absinthe doesn't use any artificial colors, and is not poisonous in any way. Get your facts straight, then get your head out of your ass!
Savage's "Archie Bunker was smarter than you" comment at the end was a bit ironic, given that the character was created by a limousine liberal leftist (who later founded the sadly misnamed "People for the American Way" - should be called Sheeple for the Anti-American Way) for the express purpose of mocking and ridiculing blue collar conservatives.
He may well have a PhD, but his science here is wrong. Consider that the FDA just made absinthe legal after nearly a hundred years. Why? Because the science used back then to claim that it was dangerous was recently re-examined and found to be wrong. Yes, absinthe contains thujone. Guess what? Apples contain cyanide. Some compounds are harmful in large amounts, but can be good for you in small amounts. A good scientist needs to know the difference before giving out advice.
@WildBillTurkey So the FDA is now the authority on health, lol? Does that mean that aspartame, sucralose, yellow dye number 5 and prozac are good for you too?
@WildBillTurkey Many foods have trace poisons but most are water soluble and leave the body with urine, sweat, or respiration never reaching toxic levels, however, thujone bonds with alcohol forming an ester which is fat soluble and may take months to leave the system. Additionally, the brain is almost entirely formed of cholesterol molecules, toxins which are esterized and lipidized can pass the blood brain barrier and then damage the brain. But alll the same, absinthe poisoning is pretty rare.
@thedemonnemo "absinthe poisoning is pretty rare" as in NEVER happens? Yeah, there's poor fools that drink wormwood essential oil and end up with seizures and liver failure, but drinking traditional alcohol-distilled absinthe- which we now know (thanks to proper GC-MS analysis) ALWAYS has had a median total (alpha plus beta) thujone content of only 33 mg/L. You'd die of alcohol poisoning way before you could hope to "OD" on thujone in authentic absinthe.
This tirade is scientifically incorrect. Perhaps Mr. Savage needs to review what occurs during the process of distillation. Please don't substitute your hate of trendy leftists for sound science. Modern absinthe is as safe as any other alcoholic beverage, and to claim otherwise is simply ignorant.
after looking over what you have said and looking into this my self I find that you do not know what you are talking about. I also find what Mr. Savage is talking about is also not true. Think before you post!
Think before you post. It's *DOCTOR* Savage. He has his pHD in nutrional medicine as well as other. He has studied effects and ingredients very extensively.
But by all means, go ahead and drink it. Van Gogh didn't cut his ear off for nothing.
I did not know that he was any sort of "doctor". Still I find what he is say about absinthe is a not a fact but what he wants to be true. If you really want to know more about absinthe and what it can do to you then I think that you should look into as I have. (I have been looking into for over 10 years!)
If anything it is "All" of his drink did not help. Also many have drank absinthe and not gone mad. Also absinthe would not be on the market if it was poison.
I just was going over this and new things have come to light about "Doc. Savage". He is just a right wing nut and you will just go with what ever he tells you is right!
The absinthe they sell in North America is has FAR LESS wormwood percentage than that from Europe! You will not hallucinate. With that said it 's still garbage.
Uh...this displays a fundamental misunderstanding of how Absynthe is made, as well as legal standards of making alcoholic beverages. All alcohol, btw, is poisonous--in sufficient amounts. So is salt, for that matter. Or aspirin. I drink absynthe (every now & then, not being a heavy drinker) because I like the taste & the specific buzz, unlike simple drunkenness. Between absynthe and a martini, those are the only real differences.
Michael Savage has a masters degrees in medical botany and medical anthropology and earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in Epidemiology and Nutritional Science.
Even doctors can be wrong. I have done quite a bit of research on this subject myself, and everything I've learned is in contradiction to what this man has said. I stand by my research--and my own knowledge of WHY I have myself drunk absynthe, rather than accept his shrill declaration of my motives, having never met or heard of, me.
If you have something 160 proof, it's Grain Neutral Spirits. You've distilled out everything (or almost everything) except the alcohol. Everything higher than 160 proof is pretty much all the same.
dead man walking drink this because their brain has reached a point of mass ignorance.
