You should really see this movie in the context of Bergman's Persona, Shame, and A Passion (The Passion of Anna in the U.S.) They are all inter-related thematically with more or less the same cast. Each film enriched the others. In some ways, Hour of the Wolf is an extension of Persona which preceded it.
I love how Bergman created this ambiance in this movie, I literally felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I think Hollywood with all of their blood, gore and foolish, comic horror storylines have a lot to learn.
I'd have to agree that Bergman receives more credit than he deserves. Many of his films are sort of ultra-theatrical in that they don't go very far beyond an immediate, visceral experience, which is its own thing. But to call someone uncultured for not liking Bergman is ridiculous. I understand that there isn't a logic behind his anti-Bergman stance, but there isn't often isn't logic behind Bergman's films. It's all positive popular discrimination. We are told he is artistic so we believe it.
i have to humbly agree with you. Der Vargtimmen is one of the greatest fims ever. Bergman was only as 'deep/shallow' as the viewer/audience. I think some call that ART.
I have never seen a good film from this fucking ingemar.B. I cant understand what this fuss is about, the man is dead, nobody in Sweden likes his films, its always the same, arnolds films is shit, ingemars is very good... I love the youth and I hope they make a difference
Bergman surely has to be the most sensual film maker ever and the most psychologically profound.
