  • MEL! MEL! MEL! MEL! MEL! MEL!

  • Damn I connect with this song right now, just been one of those days

  • Imagine being in the Garden that night in 1979 and Bruce walks out and says, "this one's new" and hearing the premier of The River. And one of the saddest songs in Rock.

  • listen to that voice !!! Boss not like that anymore. That's not a knock. I've going to his shows since late 70's. No rock star, athlete or otherwise related can produce at present age versus back then. Still love him!!

  • @ynotttt I disagree. I can name one. Eric Burdon of The Animals. Check it out- he sounds just as monstrous today as he did in the mid 60's. Oh and go Boss!

  • DYLAN FOR DUMMIES.

  • 54 people couldn't get Mary pregnant.

  • His lyrics are great, most of his good songs have a meaning, compared to the current mainstream, this is extremely special. Just love Bruce

  • They don't call me Dr. Harmonica for nothing. Why not???Because as good a performer as Bruce Springsteen is he does not know how to play the harmonica. When he plays my dog runs from the room and my cat foams at the mouth and I must cover my ears. He was not playing the harp in this track. he was just breathing in it. . Maybe by now he's improved.

  • @drharmonica maybe we just dont give a shit about ur ability with the harmonica. And teach ur pets to listen to better music than urs

    Peace

  • @drharmonica why not? the harmonica in this song is essential!

  • Epic, neverending song! BOSS you're awesome.

  • Look up Pat Byrnes version. WAY better.

  • @patrickh5421 No one beats the boss, NO ONE. It is his version and he wrote it himself, only the boss can sing this song like it should.

  • one of the best performances by bruce

  • I NEED TO TELEPORT MYSELF TO THE PAST

  • I love this one 'The River'. It rocks!

  • Turn your head away from nowadays music and let the good old music enter

  • why in the name of fuck is lil wayne in the suggested videos ??

  • 6:22 Mickey Mouse!

  • So god dam awsome, I love it and I didnt even grew up with him.

  • is tht peter tosh in the beginning?, th'd be BA

  • Deeper than any river will ever cleanse these lyrics reach into the soul and come to rest.

  • April 12th in Detroit! Not only will it be my first Springsteen concert, but my first concert ever. I am excited as hell. I hope they play this song.

  • @usmc20032011

My first concert was also Bruce Springsteen...but that was in 1980! We're seeing him in Tampa this year while we're on vacation. Enjoy - you'll never see anyone else like him.

  • Fresh as the morning dew

  • I never really hate on any type of music but god I wish my generations music was like this... somebody singing about a one night stand in a club doesn't quiet measure up to this

  • ...Nice :) ...

  • OMG! 31.7 Bruce Springsteen Helsinki and next day 1.8 Red Hot Chili Peppers Tampere.i think after that i have got everything i need for my life : D

  • amazing song <3

  • its 29 degrees C here ( 84 F), a warm summer day. I hit play, he plays the harmonica and then sings " I come from down in the valley...". I get that falling backwards feeling in the back of my head, the hairs on my arm standing up and my skin getting goosebumps. Damn. I love it when that happens from a song. Thanks Bruce.

  • ...we drove down to the playground and we'd slide

  • IM GOING TO HIS CONCERT IN THE SUMMER IM ACTUALLY SO EXCITED!!! :D

  • @Sarah1Hanna where is the concert??

  • @flowerchildash i forget but it shall be great.

  • :'(

  • eu amo bruce amoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo de mais

  • yes, together with his born in the usa in east berlin 1988...that shivvers as well

  • Is it one of THE most powerful performances in rock history?

  • Why on earth is Newt Gingrich advertising on Bruce Springsteen? I'm pretty sure most of his fans despise that man.

  • Makes me cry EVERY damn time BEAUTIFUL song. Brought up on this kinda music... SO glad. Not many artists write songs that have meaning like this anymore. The music industry needs to sort itself out and let rock and alternative take over once again

  • @66a7xfoREVer61 jesus does this comment have to be made on every fucking video! Literally every video pre 2000 has a comment just like this on it. Just listen to the music and shut up.

  • Absolutely beautiful!!

  • I have to add to my last post it was Bruces' sister and her husband. Great song.

  • Kinda weird considering the song is about his sister.

  • When he sings "At night on them banks I'd lie awake and pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take" it makes me shake.

  • Is that Jackon Browne in the beginning?

  • who cant like this song?

  • @tikonom only complete autistic douche bags

  • I'm 17 years old and this is my favourite song :) Love you Bruce

  • why would someone dislike this? i understand maybe this isn't the video you were looking for but you don't need to dislike it for that, and if that wasn't your reason, then why? don't understand who could dislike this

  • im 21 and this is my no.1 song, springsteen is a god

  • OK

  • @Campestral I have no idea how old you are or what you are smoking, It has nothing to do with RELIGION, Is about the American Dream and it Slipping away because of responsibities in life and doing the right thing. His anti-war song is 'WAR" he gointo a long montalog about putting blind faith in you goverment need to be something you think about 'War, what is it good for , absolutly nothing'

  • @lazymutts what the hell does it matter what people get from a song? it's just as good, no matter what.

  • Comment removed

  • @lazymutts this song is actual about Premature pregnancy, marriage and a weepy harmonica crush the dreams of a young couple. hence "We went down to the courthouse/And the judge put it all to rest/No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle/No flowers, no wedding dress."alsoThe shotgun wedding in the story relates to Springsteen's sister, who got married when she was still a teenager. She knew it was about her and her husband the first time she heard it.

  • OMG what an amazing song!he leaves everything on stage!tank you Boss for this song!

  • Bruce, Bruce, Bruce:)

  • If you are just listen to "The River" in 2012 this was The no- Nuke concert in the early '80s, I have it on an old VHS tape, the croud was hollering Bruce, Bruce, Bruce for 5 minutes before he went on stage and Bonnie Raitt and the other sings did not know who he was except his fans. My husband had bought the album and made me listen to it, I cried. Its about a couple agirl getting prenant and a marriage and the tough times they go threw to keep the marriage to gather. Just a little INFO

  • @lazymutts it's about religion, did what my daddy done. he's talking about inescapable cultures that drain hope when the natural mind aka the river has a natural flow into the sea where we all meet :)

  • Best piece from Bruce, EVER :)

  • This is amazing! Bruce is so cool!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • ROSKILDØØØØ

  • Saddest song ever :(

  • brought me so many times to teers....great music !

  • I find myself walking around singing this song all the time. I love it!

  • "...and the judge put it all to rest"

    the Boss.

  • "...her body tan and wet down at the riservoir"

    Beatiful.

  • I was 19 when this song dominated the air, and the Boss's new double-album was a prized possession for many of my college dorm-mates -- the same age as "Mary" and the protagonist. The River's lyrics made quite an impression on me (and I'm sure other guys): life offers choices, like stay in college and make a career, get a union card, or get Mary pregnant and grow up too soon. In 2010 I dropped the needle in the groove and ripped 19 of the songs to a CD (one wouldn't fit); it lives on for me.

  • He has big zit on his neck

  • is he crying?

  • cool

  • Bruce is an inspiring musician to me !! please view my new songs video 'The Blues Still Follow Romeo Around' ...Thanks

  • he's crying..

  • Gothenburg 2011!!! ULLEVI!!!!

  • mary got stuck in traffic..

  • Thumbs up for watching this in 2011. And loving it!

  • so does mary get an abortion?

  • @billymayer1000 why would they bother to get married if she got an abortion? that's not how it was done. You kept the baby and married the boy. I should know. :(

  • @TheChopsinator i was just wondering because he says ''and that was all she wrote'' and he never says anything else about it

  • @billymayer1000 I think what he meant by 'that was all she wrote' is that childhood and any aspirations of college are now down the drain. It's open to interpretation, but he doesn't sound happy about the marriage and neither does Mary. I always figured it was a shotgun wedding.

  • @TheChopsinator That makes perfect sense, however, we hear nothing about the kid after, and they go down to the river without them... idk

  • @billymayer1000 that kid is you full of questions like your folks

  • @Campestral what?

  • The International Space Stations TacoBell Auditorium 2050!

  • this is pure amazing

  • "They bring you up to do like your daddy done" Well, those days are gone...

  • @escaa13 I'll be there too.See ya in the front row.Coming all the way from Serbia just for that show

  • @vladamih That's so worth it! i'm coming from belgium so little bit closer:)

  • Great song, he is the best man to have come out of music as far as i am concerned. An E Street gig is something to behold. Pure class and brilliance.

  • I am in love with the Boss!!

  • 1980 or 2011 no defferance! USA wake up! You still permit the same shit!!! In Europe we at least try to deal with this. Get back on the horse. GUES WHAT A TRADEUNION AINT COMMUNISM IT IS COMMERN SENSE. yOU SOULD KNOW!! YOU ENVENTED THEM!! STOP THE EXPLOITERS JOIN THE BATTLE FOR A BETTER WORLD

  • @usranger76 49

  • @usranger76 make that 49

  • @LaGreatChrisMaxie -- could have said it better myself but your exactly right. His words can carve a picture in your mind, this ain't rap this is above and purer than that crap!

  • I usually never ever make a comment about the people who dislike a video, but seriously... anybody who disliked this can fuck the fuck off.

  • 45 people dove on a stone

  • paste w3. ----> youtube.com/watch?v=NU6KGkjJqA0&feature=relmfu

  • "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?"

    PRECIOSO.

Yo nací mas o menos cuando esta canción pero siento que mi epoca es esa más que la que me ha tocado vivir.

I was born more or less at this song´s time but i fell that my time is just that and not when I must live.(sorry for my english)I come from Spain and I love springsteen

  • This was over thirty years ago. In those thirty years since then, there probably haven't been thirty songs to match it or most of the work he was putting out in that era.

  • good song

  • every time I hear this song I get goose bumps.

  • yes,i sad yes...Bruce Springsteen is the best!

  • erwin nyhoff is GREAT but THE BOSS is AMAZING

  • there is only one THE BOSS

    marlowefive

  • "Are dreams a lie that don't come true? Or is it something worse?" Powerful lyrics. Such an amazing singer.

  • This man is really amazing.

  • no i am amazing...

  • @ATM999

Hey This guy is amazing!!! ive met him once, my bro actually took him out fishing haha ,,, Please go to my channel and check out my Bruce Springsteen cover of my favorite song, "If Ishould Fall Behind" Thank you!!

  • Erwin Nyhoff was awesome tonight too, with dancing in the dark. (the girl was very good too but Erwin was too experienced ;) for her)

  • this is one of the best songs ever made!!

  • so beautiful, bruce...

  • What the hell are those guys sitting at the table talking about at the beginning of the video?

  • @MChute2010 sounded like a benefit concert or someting

  • Comment removed

  • I'm a blastocyst and I love Bruce.

  • Sometimes I wish I didnt enjoy Bruce Springsteen so much, whenever I have it on at home my mum just sings to every song.

  • This song is so cool

  • this is music !

  • I'm 16 and I absolutely love Bruce Springsteen! I have over 100 Sirius Channels and I only listen to the E-Street Radio channel because it's that good. I must be the luckiest person on Earth because I have my dad's shirt from The River Tour and it's my very favorite shirt. I'd wear it every day if I could! Seeing all these young fans makes me believe he may do another tour some day, but there will never be a replacement Clarence so maybe not. We'll see!

  • Αφεντικαρα

  • Why does he blink so often?

  • @daansmit123 - Cuz he needs Bausch & Lomb.

  • @daansmit123

It's the bright lights on the stage. That's also why he's sweating by the end of the song.

  • love the fact that i cry every time i hear this song, purley cause it was my Mum and Dad's favourite song before she died. but boy i love this man and I'm 13.

  • sublime

  • me be 15. soon 16 (here i´d put in some childish things like :D, but i would rather do it this way) and i´ve liked this man since i was 9years old. The first cd i ever heard was album named Hands in hands. God i love that album

  • @BaronBuddy oh, and as to an addition (haters gonnae hate, but ya know, nt only children is childish ;D) i like Lady Gaga, despise Justin Bieber and really enjoy me old disney-music! And i hate English grammar when i´m tired...

  • For me Bruce Springsteen = America ? Kiss from France

  • Heard this song for the first time when I was a teenager and it´s still my favorite. You rock Boss... ;)

  • i dont really care who sings the song more who write it that much harder to do.

  • Bruce has too many great songs.

  • Funny how that dutch guy made a OK cover of this song and now they all claiming he is the next boss *sigh*

  • @B0zZz3

I know what you mean! If that Dutch guy had written it himself and done it FIRST, then maybe he would be the next Springsteen. People think it's enough now to have an OK singing voice. Bruce is a real artist.

  • Erwin Nyhoff heel goed maar orgineel zal altijd beter blijven

  • does this remind anyone else of dire straits 'telegraph road'?

  • Ineens komen Nederlanders van alle hoeken even Erwin promoten :p

  • Comment removed

  • Erwin Nyhoff sucks.
