I didn't notice these before becoming a wheelchair user, but there are more of them around than you think! I can't remember using any when I lived in (and visited) the US, but there are plenty here in Canada. They are usually not used in high traffic areas, but in places used for moving freight or for wheelchair users. In fact, there is one right outside my apt. door.

This is fairly common in Europe. We can't have them in this country because silly Americans can't resist sticking their fingers in everything.
