  • Man, this one takes me back to the day I turned 14 in the late spring of 1978. This was the cut that my pops had finally "made a jazz man'' out of me, as he put it. He had been listening to Gary Bartz since the 60's, but it was this album that put him over with me. Thanx for the posting of this still cool tune.

  • @victorrecord , your pops is a bad man. I bought this album when I was 18. Let's face it fam, we came up listening to some good music. My sister would play Celestial Blues and that is how I found myself listening to this living legend.

  • "Play it HARD!" -an exclamation by Donald Byrd, perhaps, at about at about 2:31.

  • I, too, discovered this album in 1977. It took a minute for me to get into it, but when I did, I used to have emotional spasms when listening to it -tears of joy would actually flow from my eyes. And recently when I came across it on CD, I bought it instantly. Those tears & spasms still occur. The musicianship (and production) is SUPERB! Gary Bartz, Donald Byrd, Syreeta Wright, the Mizell Brothers and everybody else involved created what has been said earlier in these comments: HISTORY!

  • This one is a gem. Takes me back to 77/78 at Point Park University - downtown Pittsburgh. We used to jam this one, blastin in the dorm hallways. Larry Gordon, a Detroit hooper - turned me onto Gary Bartz - been a fan evry since. Can you say Fonce and Mizell? they're cats behind DByrd, Blackbyrds, Harvey Mason, Marvin, early J-5, even some LTD - amazingly talented brothers. Where are they from ??? i never knew. teacawks@yahoo.com - now in Augusta, GA

  • Fantastic. Didn't think I'd hear this again. Lately many obscure jazz musics from the 70's are posted on Youtube. Ramsey Lewis, Karma, Dave Valentin, Paul Horn, Mike Maineri, Stanley Turrentine, Tom Browne, Caldera, Harvey Mason, Lonnie Liston Smith, Dexter Wansel, Wayne Henderson, Ronnie Laws, Lee Ritenour and Keith Jarrett to name a few. Bought 300 albums ($3.99 or 3 for $10.00). Albums, concerts ($15-$20) & the ladies kept me broke & happy. Great post.

  • I was seventeen when I first heard this and I played the album over and over again. I was into Gary Bartz and Andy Bey back then , but this joint was sooo funky. Many of us at that time and at that age listen to a wide variety of music. Good music.

  • Love it!

  • "Sweet Soul Sounds are stirring my Soul!" One of my all-time favorites. Takes me back to 1977 when I was stationed at Beale Air Force Base. Wonderful. Thanks for posting this.

  • Thanks so much for making the effort to post. Makes my day better to hear this beautiful music.

  • This gem by sax master Gary Bartz, has that smooth jazz, pop feel good sound that

Fonce&Larry Mizell were so wonderful at, great post and thanks for the music.

  • the violin part is the best

  • the comments i have read make me realize there are still beautiful people out there. thank you all!

  • look out for Fonce & Larry, Eye see you.

  • I love how it kicks in at the 1:10 mark. NICE JAZZ FUNK!!!

  • "Rappers make news; Jazz musicians make HISTORY!"

    Golden!

  • @bronislaw dopest thing ive read today

  • @turbomoonie :)

  • @bronislaw I agree and im 23

  • Oh yeah, I always like to plug the fact that I am in my 20's and this album was hella out before I was born... Just shows how timeless and priceless this album is... Also big ups to Sigidi, Mason, Rainey and all who contributed to one of the finest albums of '77...

  • When I first heard this, I was like how official are the Mizell's for havin' hella strings... Then that soprano solo just stole my life... Then the beautiful Syreeta just comes in with "He's A Macaroni... Again" dammit... If this song does not touch you, you are a whacky-booty... I just love the way she just sings so smooth yet she stands out, I promise if she were still with us, I would have her sing the soundtrack of my life... Big ups to the Mizells, Bartz, Wright, et. al...

  • very beautiful!

  • Peace!!

  • This Gary Bartz is G R E A T !

Long life to FUNK JAZZ !

  • LamontCJ,

The foot is up my behind for not paying attention when I was a kid. I just realized the Mitzell Brothers work with Donald Byrd and now I stumble upon this cut they did on Gary Bartz. I just paid attention to Gary Bartz on a couple of Phyllis Hyman tunes. Similar to some tunes they did with Bobbi Humphrey.

  • Hey man.. do you think you can send me this song through z share or something, send me a message or something, I can't seem to find it.

  • Great album cover too.

  • Yo, this album has been the truth! The sound is a bluesy funk that is unique. It's a killer!

  • Its is an interesting track, sonds like something set to something cinematic.

  • Possibly, but I think the changes are contrived to lure you in.

  • Thanx Lamont you've done it again!! Man, I bought this album when it came out in '77. I love the classical intro ala Bethoven. Gary played hell'a alto sax & the Late Syretta Wright's voice was "Angelic". Thanx again for the progressive jazz blast from the past. Keep on keepin' it real. Thanx Santo

  • Your Welcome!! This is my FAV!!

  • Yo Lamont I bought this album for thi song. It's my Fav too.

  • Man, I haven't heard the term "progressive jazz" in many years. My late buddy and I used to pore over albums and artists and discuss this very same subject over our "beverages of choice". I was a RTF, Weather Report, Jean-Luc Ponty, Fuse One cat while he favored the traditional jazz artists who went "commercial" like Roy Ayers,Ramsey Lewis,Donald Byrd, Charles Earland, and so on. You can imagine it was lively and fun. I really miss it!

  • Lamont I'm like you. I liked Weather Report & Jean-Luc Ponty too. Iwas always a Donald Bryd & Ramsey Fan from way back. I discovered Charles Earland in'77 with the release of his Great Pyramid album. I wish someone would post Great pyramid. I miss good progressive, fusion,&contemporary jazz radio.

  • Thank heaven for venues like YOUTube! I really enjoy being able to share music and thoughts regarding artistic expression. Colonel, have you had the opportunity to travel? If you have, where, and what perspectives do you have about life in general as a result of your travels?

  • Well Lamont, there is alot of world out there. I've visited Asia during "The Big Asian Vacation" a.k.a. Vietnam,Europe(F.R.G./West Germany, Conus/ Continental USA,Canada,The Carribean/Greater Antillies). As James Taylor says:"I've seen fire & rain,I've sunny days that I thought would never end;I've seen lonely times when I could'nt find a friend"... I realize that people the world over are alike; we cherish our childrens future,we enjoy peace, harmony & life in general;but above all we are mortal

  • Amen! Great reply and God bless you! I hope to share more music and elicit good converstion from folks like yourself who seem to get it. Thinking globally, there is so much to consider when we are told of impending doom and the big boogie man. I find that people are people and if we as individuals spent more time with self evaluation, perception of problems would be minimized making way for love and harmony.

  • I was reading over you guys' convo and damn, you are so deep with musical knowledge... I am in my 20's and I feel like I know alot about progressive jazz, but damn, I feel like I am in grade school again... Bug-ups on the post. Peace

  • Urology707, It is grand to know that you are one of a few of the "Young Guns" who even know who the late Syreeta Wright,& Fonce & Larry Mizell were. Rappers make news; Jazz musicians make HISTORY! I'm happy to enlighten you anytime.

    Sincerely

    Colonel Santo A. Chase,USA(Ret.)

  • @swt32567 A few of the other cuts are excellent as well. Listen to it all a few times.

  • blow Gary, blow.

    macaroni,macaroni.......!!!

  • You said it! I like the breakdown at 1:13, he get's really funky with Syreeta fillin' it out with background. "I'm a macaroni baby, I don't take no stuff" Gotta Love it!
