All those great comments made pre-newmeetup- I would be ITA with all. Meetup changed my life and those of scores of other people I know. Now look. Everything's turned sour. Why? Get to know what makes a great meetup. Realize that members and organizers make your company what it is. I'd like more member participation, too, but that's a matter solved through human psychology, not short-sighted software upgrades.
Isn't it funny how all your responses to this video have turned sour!?! Where are the praises now Scott? I personally didn't need you to discount meetup by alf. I was such a happy customer wit the way things were that I would have paid double...
everything you've said WAS true, up till 2 days ago. now it's just kinda stuffed with this horrible UI. please fix it soon before I have no choice but to move to another platform
Can the next video be an apology for screwing up all of your customers years of hard work? New Meetup my ass, what a crock!
Hey, delete some more comments and posts on your organizer discussion forum from your paying customers about how much we hate the "New Meetup" too. Nice job sticking your head in the sand.
I like meetup. I've been running groups for 4 years. Then yesterday without warning you changed the website without any consultation in a way that destroyed the work of your members.
You talk about 'being more than a consumer' but you treat your organisers like 'less than clients'.
Meetup does not seem to care though. I and many, many other are sad about this.
Seriously who the hell came up with the new layout, find that person and fire them ASAP! WTH were you thinking enabling any member of the group I pay for to create their own meets on my friggin dime?!?!?! I have joined the dues strike, I urge any and all organizers of meets to join as well. If you don't like the "new and improved" (seriously?!?!?!) layout go to your account and cancel your dues subscription until meetup starts listening to their paying customers!
The new layout SUCKS!!!!!!!! Why are you trying to ruin Meetup? I simply cannot believe the company's attitude of not listing and of not caring what the clients who pay them want!
Congrats. I have been a member of meetup for 3 years now and made some solid friends and broadened my social circle. I agree with all your reasons and think it is a great time to try and inspire others to get out there and be active.
I also have to compliment the simplicity and cleanliness of the site. I am thankful that the dues keep the company running, profitable and ad free.
Good Video, I want to start a Meet-up group and I have ideas in my head but because I was unemployed and struggling to find employment the expense would add a burden. This video would help as an introduction, and the idea i have is based on two books I have read about "Reinventing Myself" and changing my lifestyle for the future. I have sent a request to the auther for permission to promote his items and ideas within my group to those who truely want the same. Any input is always welcome!
I like Meetup.com. It's a good website. I got a lot of web traffic from my page on there. If I can ever find someone to sponsor my pages, I'll post a new page on there again. I can't afford to pay the dues for the site myself, especially since what I want to post on there is a non-profit group that I can't make any money from.
Thank you for taking your idea about meetup.com and putting it into action. It really has changed my life. I'm finally out doing what I love (which I only discovered by taking the leap!) instead of waiting to meet someone to do stuff with ... and guess what? I met the love of my life while I was out having fun!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Best of luck to you and meetup.com in the future.
I'm up for it! I live in a small isolated town and my life revolves around fitness training and hours and hours on my lap top. I have a wide range of interests including history and archeology and enjoy hiking in the countryside buy I do it all alone. Happy 2011
Nicely done!! I swear by meetup.com when I move to new cities and know hardly anybody! I'm even trying to get a friend in Brisbane to go to some to freshen things up a bit and meet new people! So that's great because people come and go and it's nice to meet new people from different groups, go to different places, do different things and keep the positive energy! Congrats on the million group mark! Well Done Meetup!!
Great job on making the video. It's ALL true!! I could be the poster child for starting groups since I started 8 years ago. Even though I was doing a good job of promoting my groups on my own, a good friend INSISTED that I learn about start using Meetup. So for the past 8 months since I've added meetup to my promoting tools, my groups have accelerated GREATLY. I offer more than 300 events/classes every year, just with my Outdoor Adventure Group and I have 2 other meetup groups besides that.
I noticed all those production issues too but I think it was purposeful.. not necessarily underhanded, like Bush junior pretending to be dumb and accessible to appeal to middle America when you can see him debate articulately 20 years ago,,, but I think the video was purposefully badly produced, to appear unintimidating and "startup".
Happy New Year!!! Great message......1 is the lonliest number....add TEN more "11".....not lonely anymore!!! Never been to a "Meetup".....but, I do believe it would be a great way to make lasting friends!! I enjoy following the site!!!

Meetup.com is awesome. Thanks to you I have rediscovered hiking/outdoor activities, lost weight and discovered more about Los Angeles than I did in the first 10 years of living here. Meetup turns the computer into a tool for getting out and interacting with people.
as I was reading the email in which I received this video I saw something about discounts ...What?!? ...I click anyways ...watching I was confounded with that '50%disc thing' so I was lost during your presentation (next time I'll stop long enough to figure out what I'm seeing as I'm seeing~before clicking) ...once I figure out the '50%disc thing' I may return to this
...catch ya later : ) ...maybe 'cause if you are charging people to "meetup" I'm done with ya 'K'
I came back to see what you are getting from our instant gratification society....Those who cannot stay in position long enough to hear your great message will not be in position to interfere with a good meeting either.....Thanks again......From a businessman.
Thank you for this very encouraging invitation.........As one who has suffered criticizm in the past for trying to do good in the hood I encourage those who have faced the same resistance not to quit.......I am going to a new region to work and be warm for the winter season and will contact the local meetups..........I am a businessman.....and community advocate.......Keep up the great work....
Please Meet-up with a professional Videographer. The credibility of your message is diminished due to poor production values. What's wrong? Start with a script that keeps your message short and concise. Use a teleprompter. Use a microphone. Light the scene. And very importantly... use graphics to help the viewer remember the 11 points. Ohhh. tell talent to SLOW DOWN. this is not a race.
I think you are fantastic...love the body movement, it's fun and shows how passionate you are...besides Meet-UP is such a great thing for communities. I am in Portland Oregon and vote for MORE MORE MORE>>>
I liked the concept of meetup, then I found a group run by a woman who used the meetup concept as a way of ripping off consumers. She would charge $20 a head just to get photographers together to learn from each other at a site that was free anyways, let them learn from each other. All she did was start the group, charge, then sit back. When I asked about this use of meetup I got nowhere. I guess using meetup to rip off others is ok.
Thank you for truly caring about those of us who are organizers. I think some of the criticisms are pretty shallow and in my case, I thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to let us in on some key points to be reminded of or to hear about for the first time. Keep up the good work! Thank you for inviting us into your office. It's fun to see the background and to see the different groups' T-shirts displayed that I've heard about! Happy 2011 to Meetup!
Good stuff, thanks for the great reminder about getting out and getting together. Glad you guys do what you do so I can further figure out what the hell it is I'm supposed to be doing, too. :) Cheers! Happy New Year.
Great job! Meetup is awesome! I've joined meetups to help me learn spanish as a second language, get writing critique, dance and explore my community with a great group of people when I moved into a new area! Thanks for all your help and great work. Keep it up!
Wow.... I like anyone who is doing something and I like what you are doing...I will consider it... the comments are somewhat critical. I have learned it is easier to critique others work... which I was good at.... but I sat back and never put my work forward for others to critique. Now I admire anyone who is doing something whether it is perfection or not... at least they are doing.
Next time tape in an environment that is conducive to video....no red walls, checkered floor and TERRIBLE glare from behind the speaker. DO NOT rock back & forth and wave your hands when talking. Have your content prepared vs. using cue cards.
#1 You should have done a test run. #2The color red means Stop (bad location) .#3..you are not camera friendly - #4way way too much movement. #5 the glare behind you is distracting.
I use meet up but perhaps you should have had a contest from true users to create their own videos.....
@sheif Elizabeth Anne Asher nailed it pretty well dude. Constructive critique here, so accept this failure as feedback. Goal is to gain users, not scare them away.
THIS is a promo, search Meetup 2011 Promo. These kids don't have the capital of a big corporation, but they have the passion that is obviously lacking here! Disappointed.
I think the length is fine. Annotations could be a fun add-on to the video where they start to clutter the page.
Where can I get more info about these new features mentioned in the video coming soon? Even if I knew when they were coming rather than be surprised by them would be an advantage.
Thanks for getting out there. I organized a MeetUp in Montreal, and realized I would have needed something to rally around, i.e.,. some banner or something.
Re: your video(s) have you considered captioning it properly, so that if someone is watching it in adverse listening conditions, or they're deaf they can still "get it"
I do the captioning, online and perfectly, been doing that before AOL had mail.
Thank you for this! I'm a meetup watcher--I belong to several and read the posts but never go to the events. The few I've been to have been great (pittsburgh area). You've inspired me to show up!
I enjoy the meet up group that I go to. I have learned how to dance, and I otherwise would not have the opportunity and all seem to be nice people! Take a chance!!! Enjoy life and try something you would not have the opportunity otherwise to do.
Nicely done Scott.....we use Meet-Up to promote our Bahai Faith here in Ohio.
It is working beautifully....a wonderful "tool" to connect us all in an informal and comfortable way. We meet at different coffee shops and diners in and around
a 20 mile radius...nothing like "breaking bread" together, face to face.
We will be expanding our Meet-Up efforts in 2011, to be sure. as ever, Jules (Meet-Up organizer for the "The Bahai Prescription")
@sheif i never heard of meet ups before. how do you locate meet ups in your city or how do you locate the topics for which you might be interested. Dont listen to all those comments about your efforts. i think you did fine. you are doing something in the world while most just sit back and thrown stones. keep it up your awesome
@kwanjin1 search for SLOW MOVEMENT in wikipedia. Meetup is also about NOT living frenetically as in this virtual realms of youtube/ internet, etc. Train your patience, go to a meetup.
I'm confused ... what doesn't everyone like about the meetup now? I haven't spent a lot of time on there, but I don't understand.
Thanks,
Andrea Barlow

My question is, do you have political meetups?

Connect in 2011! Has meetup been involved in Customer gatherings? or at tradeshows? rmcmanus@kerninc.com wants to know more.

I think the length is fine. Annotations could be a fun add-on to the video where they start to clutter the page.
Where can I get more info about these new features mentioned in the video coming soon? Even if I knew when they were coming rather than be surprised by them would be an advantage.

Was this the rough draft? I would expect better quality with how much $ you collect from the organizers like me!

Hey Scott, Happy New Year!
All valid reasons! Let's meet more and make it easy for community to keep going!
Would love to see more tools to energize members of the community and have the burden of running a group spread to keep the ball rolling!

I like your enthusiasm! It was worth the three minutes to hear the "Let's" part at the end!

Thanks. Bye.

Well Happy New Year dear MEET UP folks!
