583 didn't break down... Listen carefully as the Surfliner(s) pull(s) out and you'll notice both F59s are running and providing power. 583 struck some (large) debris which resulted in damage to the Cab Car rendering it unable to lead. 785 was backed in on top of it and used essentially as a stand-in cab car to get the train into LA.
yep sounds like an amtrak maneuver, they tried doing that when I went to SLO except with they tried connecting a regular surfliner set with the 1 story one and ended up delaying the train about 6 hours
