Jerry was 40 in this clip. Gary was 21. Jerry was 19 when his first son was born. He married at age 18. But he had already been a professional performer for several years.
Jerry would get another shot at network TV the next year. NBC wanted to duplicate the success of Dean Martin's show and gave Jerry a variety show. They stuck with it for 2 seasons, but it flopped, too.
the geekyness was his shtick, screen persona, the character that made him famous. in "real life" he was a serious, intelligent & complex man, as is common with most comedians.
that you believed he was geeky's a tribute to his talent.
as he aged, he did what everyone tends to do...put on weight. when he was young he was the weight he should have been for his height & age.
had you known him personally, as a young man, your opinion would be different!
Jerry is the first guest that I've seen so far, that smoked during while he was in the hot seat...Uncle Miltie was a good guess...Jerry Lewis has said on more than one occasion that he acts like a 9 year old child...I guess that was his secret...Jerry is a legend and it's good to know that he's still with us and still revered and beloved ane respected...A comedy legend!
@pagalley1 Randolph Churchill and Greer Garson were other cigarette-smoking mystery guests. Groucho Marx, George Burns, Milton Berle, and Ernie Kovacs alone and with his wife were cigar-smoking guests.
@romeman01 Thanks for that information...It made me cough...That's a lot of cigarettes and cigarette smoke...I wonder how many of the lot you mentioned died of lung cancer.
I cannot express the love and admiration I have for Jerry Lewis. the man has encountered every hardship there is in life and still come through punching. Thank you, Jerry, for all that you have gave and still giving.
Cerf's aural intelligence impresses again. The obvious answer would be "Uncle Miltie", based strictly on the responses. Apparently only Cerf picked up on Jerry's inimitable whine -- much more of a tenor than Berle's.
You mention the Video of Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin appearing on WML? but it doesnt exist any longer...someone should definitely upload that one. Very funny. :)
Always fantastic to see earlier footage of Jerry - one of the funniest in the business, and a great, caring man who has helped a lot of deserving kids along the way.
Arlene and Larry appeared together on Password (in color!) several months after this, in April 1967; all five eps are here on YT, and they are wonderful! Both, of course, were also very accomplished on the legitimate stage (Mr. Blyden would win a Tony in 1972 for the revival of "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum").
This was only a few years after Jerry's disasterous ABC prime time show. ABC paid Jerry a fortune and had to cancel after 13 weeks because the show was panned mercilessly by critics and got terrible ratings. It was one of the biggest flops in TV history but ABC had to pay Jerry off. BTW, Jerry was 40 in 1966.
His intense emotional responses to the TV Show questions refers to the variety show disaster he endured in 1963. Interestingly enough, after he left the show, most of the producers and staff stayed on with the variety show without Jerry and turned it into "The Hollywood Palace," which was a six season hit.
One of the earliest appearances of Broadway actor Larry Blyden as a guest panelist. Blyden hosted syndicated WML (1972 - 1975)
My grandma used to have a woman who lived with her (Mrs. Koper) who babysat Jerry Lewis when he was a little boy.

The difference is, Jim Carrey borrowed A LOT from Jerry Lewis, Jerry was original.
Danny Kaye also a bit goofy certainly energetic was, I think a bit more passable thanks to his better acting.

Did Jerry do something at the end off screen? It looked like the sound got turned off because John was still speaking but not making any sound.
