The same deterioration happened at the Discovery and Learning channels. As time passes I think the bean counters get more and more control of the studio. Between the accounting and Sales departments they conspire to supress creativity. Its easy to sell ads for familiar WWII but not for say a rich interesting subject like a history of South American revolutions. Bolivia alone has had 200 or so. So to keep revenue up its WWII, Pawn shops and Aliens all around.

a.) When the show's character relationships upstage- nay overshadow, the historical aspects, it becomes a reality drama.
b.) Much of the appraisals that are done on site are done from a business perspective, not a historical perspective. (i.e.: I used to sell bicycles especially old Schwinns. the fact that I could determine a Chicago-made Schwinn v. a Taiwan-made Schwinn does not make it historical)
Welcome to the continuing industrial age. If it isn't making money, we can't afford to host it, and if it is making money, but something else would make us more, then it isn't making enough. Because education and communication don't matter, money does - and a better educated and more clever populace might be able to do new and very impressive things that would contribute to the happiness and wealth of all, but that wealth would not be as easily monopolized. Well SyFy (and its stupid name change) think that wrestling and ghost hunting shows qualify as programing. I could maybe give them the ghost hunting if they weren't canceling amazing shows like Eureka, and I don't watch stargate or its spin-offs but I don't think they care much about it either (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't really know much about the history of stargate)
Pawn Stars is acceptable on History Channel. It's mainly about historical items. Of course, standard history related programming should be in the limelight.

Four years ago, when I was younger, my brother and I would watch this history channel and LEARN something. Or, we would watch animals on discovery channel and LEARN something. Today, I avoid those channels at all costs due to the fact that it is worse than most MTV reality shows. Our world has so much potential, but the mindless viewers have ruined it. Well I think Pawn Stars is kind of the exception considering there is a slight bit of history whenever people come into their shop with civil war items, etc.

I think the history channel tried to reform their stuff so it was interesting. Some old documentaries from them were appallingly boring, so they tried to spice things up with reality tv and aliens. While pawn stars and American pickers are my guilty pleasure, the alien stuff is crap. If the science channel can make string theory interesting, I think the history channel could make the civil war good...

Four years ago, when I was younger, my brother and I would watch this history channel and LEARN something. Or, we would watch animals on discovery channel and LEARN something. Today, I avoid those channels at all costs due to the fact that it is worse than most MTV reality shows. Our world has so much potential, but the mindless viewers have ruined it. Thus, Youtube and therefore you, are my hero. Thanks for believing names should mean something :)

The one that gets my bee in the bonnet is Ice Road Truckers. Cool show? Yes. Any relevance to History whatsoever? No. At least Pawn Stars there's often History in the stuff they bring in, and Modern Marvels does often talk about the History of the topic of the week.

Pawn Stars is all about old things that have great historical value and is still entertaing to the public, Nostradamus was an OLD (keyword) psychic-ish person who predicted things that are resembled by things happening today, and Ancient Aliens is about explaning HISTORICAL EVENTS that could possibly be explained by the existance of extra-terrestrials. So yeah, it's still the HISTORY channel......

I give Pawn Stars a pass because, quite frankly, you're bound to actually learn something when someone brings in historical items. Yeah there's the reality show aspect to it, but it's not nearly as bad because it's business rather than relationship drama or what have you on any other reality television program.

I think the history channel tried to reform their stuff so it was interesting. Some old documentaries from them were appallingly boring, so they tried to spice things up with reality tv and aliens. While pawn stars and American pickers are my guilty pleasure, the alien stuff is crap. If the science channel can make string theory interesting, I think the history channel could make the civil war good...

Discovery channel is mainly explosions and manly men doing manly things these days, and I would rather have someone that know what they're talking about explain dark matter, than Morgan Freeman.
