I avoid Mexican made strats and teles. I'm referencing Dave's comment about the Mexican strat. That said, I have heard that the Mexican instruments have been vastly improved in the last couple years. However, if one can afford American made, by all means go for those and not the Mexicans. Why? Quality, of course. Just the feel of an American instrument over its Mexican counterpart speaks volumes. *Facepalm* He is so fucking wrong! His so-called "out-of-phase position" only works on 3-way switch Strats, not 5-way, which he had no idea about. A pickup selector is a flap of metal that connects 1 or 2 pickups to the volume pot, it's not possible to work around a 5-way switch and get a different sound.
#1 learn the guitar... and "inout of phase"... really?? seriously dude come on... and #2 the S1 switching doesn't give that many more tonally ability like you say it's pretty much a "fat" switch for the pickups... all it does is fatten the sound and make it warmer... don't get me wrong i've got a Fender American Deluxe HSS Strat and that thing is awesome but shit man learn about the guitar before you "teach" people
dude u got the pickup selector settings completely wrong. and positions 2 & 4 ARE the in between ones. you only had to wedge the selector on the very first models that were released. if you are going to make an "instructional" video, you should research before you go spewing out all this junk and confusing innocent beginners.
This video proves anyone, literally ANYONE, can post an "instructional" video these days. There are no in-between positions on a 5-way switch. Positions 2 & 4 ARE the in betweens on the traditional 3-way switch. Not to mention this has been common knowledge since the 1950s.
It fails as comedy it fails as instructional and I'm not sure if he's on coke or 3 x-lg columbian coffees but theres something from columbia in his system! And the othe guys are right...the inbetween thing was when it was a 3 way switch... Fender found people where doing this and started offering a 5- way and for a few cents more had another "feature" to market. There is no inbetween on a modern 5 way switch other than 2 and 4. I think $5 worth of whatever these guys are on would kill most of
Actually, the "out of phase" positions, that is, when the switch is in between one phase and the next, only works on a 3-position switch. On a 5-position switch, positions 2 and 4 act as the "out of phase" settings. The whole concept is about engaging two pickups at the same time.
1:10 I Don't Think Putting The Pickup Selector Switch Switch Between 1 & 2 And 4 & 5 Is Really Going To Give You A Different Sound!!! Why??? There Is No In Between 1 & 2 Or 4 & 5!!!
I noticed that your first Strat had a matching pearoid headstock. What model is it? I have NEVER seen one like it. How rare is it? Where did you get it? Is it American, Mexican etc...?
@Xcorgi hi its not david, but i can tell you about that head stock, i own about 10 strats, i know there is no model like that that was produced by fender, he most likely got a pearoid pick guard or someting and had it carved into shape for the headstock and then had it either screwed or glued on, done by a pro guitar tech. i have done the same thing on my usa standard strat.
Check out the latest release from CJ McClellan, "Shades of Revolution" and the video "Whoodoo Voodoo". Recorded with an American Custom strat with a dual coil in the rear. Gets a heavy tone.
@rohan316 The simplest way to choose what pickup to use when is to just go with personal preference. A tip that might help you, however (for a Strat, anyway), is that the neck pickup is often sought after for its great blues tones though it can also achieve some great jazz and rock tones. The bridge pickup, on the other hand, can get some really great country tones (the same thing goes for the bridge pickup on Teles, though Teles tend to achieve even better country tones than Strats).
This video is inaccurate and unprofessional, yet it has almost 1000 likes, only 400 dislikes and more than 600.000 views. For fuck sake, he even has the balls to say "The big thing with guitars, especially stratocasters, is the pickups. They're gonna have that PSEUDO-stratty kinda sound". Is he even a guitar player? Seriously...
@Austink1992 Every other person has a stupid statocaster, I would rather have something different. Now I don't play Guitar I play bass. But still. Over rated guitar.
@ghostyman666 Saying it is over rated because it is popular doesn't make logical sense... I can agree it is a very popular guitar, and it can cause you to get unnoticed since it is seen so often, but i think the ability to modify it and make it your own far outweighs its popularity.
@Austink1992 Oh, big fucking deal so you can make it slightly different. It's still the same lame old guitar that every other person shits their pants over.
@ghostyman666 slightly different haha? You obviously haven't seen a lot of strats. I've seen people change the neck, pickups, bridge, add coil tapping, etc. I dare you to tell me a guitar that came out around the mid 50s that was that revolutionary. I don't see how its lame, because you can turn it into any kind of guitar you want to. I mean you can throw humbuckers on it if you dislike single coils... Your comment doesn't make any sense.
@ghostyman666 I agree, and there a lot worse. I'm just saying that for its price its a great guitar. I personally prefer my strat over my Gibson Les Paul, but to each his own.
@Austink1992 I personally like guitars that are not the traditional style. Maybe one but that's it. For example I play bass. I have a B.C rich and a dean explorer. I prefer those. But I only have one fender. and of course for the bass it would be the jazz bass. But only because it's a 5 string. I just would not go and buy basses that look similar to each other.
well.. you just figured out the way people used their switch in a time fender build 3.way selectors on their guitars. if you´re looking for more, try a megaswitch. :) rock on^^
@ledzeppelin4485 your bang on the money mate, Dave's a nice guy but he's so wrong about the out of phase sound! toggling in between positions trick on the Strat that already has a five way selector dose not work Fact, it only works on an old three way selector fact, I wonder what you were listening to Dave? think you should go watch your DvD again! you silly sausage, if you don't believe me try ringing Fender and ask or a reputable guitar tec.
complete bullshit unless you are dealing with a 3way switch with 3 pickups. then you can get positions 2 and 4 by doing this. otherwise complete bullshit.
@jayzakk72 ...LOL....Since Fender calls the Bridge # 1, that's good enough for me. The rest fall in line. On the Support page @ Fender.com check out the service diagram........they tell it all. Sometimes people talk about that which they have no knowledge.
Now I'm really freaked out! Let me get this straight: in former days, with three way switches, you had those "in between sounds", which switched the PUs "out of phase". To get exactly THAT kind of tone, the 5 way switch was implemented. Position 2 and 4 do exactly THAT, what the "in between positions" previously did! Now, here's the bomber: in between sounds with a 5 way switch, switchinhg out of phase sounds out of phase (as said in the vid!!) !! THINK AGAIN, before posting a vid.
@jayzakk72 except for the middle/bridge (he was pointing the pickup so you know what he means) he got the positions right so i don't understand the point of your comment
@jayzakk72 lol if you would pay attention he said some strats are set up one way and some another. than he said exactly what you just typed. dumbass. he knows more about this guitar than you.
@jayzakk72 lol kids on youtube are so immature these days. hes my boyfriend because im smart enough to understand what hes saying? dumbass.
anyway, you dont have to know of any strat thats set up that way for it to be possible. your not an expert on strats, you prob a 13 year old kid with a squier so gtf.
Im Thirty Fucking Eight and have been playing for Over 20 Years.
Strats have been in my arsenal for 18 years of that and while its possible for something to be set up reverse, and some Telecasters do run reverse switching, straight up this dude made a mistake and got his shit wrong, he normally does a great job on these videos but this time round...... He had a part Fail.
And it seems that so far at least 30 other people agree with my original comment
@GLK2780 Jayzakk72 is right... I've owned 3 different strats and I've played hundreds throughout my life, and I've never heard of a strat with that switching set up. Also the person in the video is also mistaken about getting the switch in between the positions.This was possible in the 1950s when it was a 3 way switch and musicians would try to find the position in between 1 and 2 and in between 2 and 3. This worked because it would use 2 pickups at once. But now strats come with a 5 way switch.

@jayzakk72 Oh yeah, I''m gonna feel like a nerd for challenging you for acting like a total nosepicking dick. "erm. actually position 2 is.." Fuck off. And all the extra comments. Owned? What the fuck is that? I'll bet you say winning like Charlie Sheen. Asshole. I tried to give an antidote to anal nitpicking you give. And the best part about me? I don't block you to tell you you're owned.
Well for starters, who's comments have received so many thumbs up they are at the top of the list while a certain some one Else's have received so many thumbs down they no longer even show.
You profile will not show if I attempt to go to it, so yeah you have blocked me chickenshit.
And back to the original point, it aint nitpicking, its fact, the dude posted an attempt at an educational video thats completely fucking wrong.
If you want to actually learn some guitar from an online dude, goto 3chord. He's kinda funny and cuts righ tto the chase. Not all this BS. If you can't pick this up on your own, sell your guitar (2me4cheap-btw). Maybe they'll explain what that roundy black plasticky thing on the amplifier that goes from 1-10 does next level video.
I had to look, I thought I was watching an Expert Villiage video. Those of you just now starting to watch this video, no it doesn't get any better. Don't waste your time.
There is no in between1 and 2...position 2 and 4 are the"in between" sounds in reference to the original that had 3 positions. Each pup had it's own position and that's it. Some guys figured out that if you got the switch just right in between them, you could engage 2 pups at once, it caught on so much that fender made the 5 way switch...everbody that plays a strat knows that!
i have a stock squire guitar and every time i go to use the tremelo it goes outta tune wtf what do i do to make it stay in tune without replacing my tremelo or any other parts
@joeyjeremiah1 You don't use it! But in all seriousness, a lot of stratocaster players do not even equip their tremolo arm. Some people find it helpful to change the nut on the neck to a different material (graphite), while others find it useful to make adjustments to the bridge height / springs. It is important to remember that it is not a Floyd Rose and can not be used for crazy dive-bombs.
you can also put a 10v battery in your strat instead of a 9v battery and get that grip-a-knob-lick sound taht all crab lickers like - attack of the fuck wads - ALRIGHTY THEN!
wat are the best pickups for a strat? also i was wondering what do Medium jumbo and jumbo frets mean? is the space between the frets bigger or smaller?
The difference is the height of the fret, not the distance between them. A jumbo is the tallest, which means when you depress the string, your not going to put very much pressure on the wood of the fretboard. Good for bending and fast playing. Medium-jumbo's are still pretty tall, but you press the wood more. Good for chrords and rhythm playing. EMG makes a killer set of pickups for Strats. David Gilmour uses them and you know what his tone is like. Rock on.
@trumusichead it means that the wires that make up the frets themselves are bigger. most stratocasters have medium-sized or medium-jumbo frets, which basically means the metal fret wires are on the small side. most heavy metal guitars like Ibanez and ESP, for example, use Jumbo frets, which are a lot bigger than the frets on a strat. Schecter even makes guitars with EXTRA jumbo frets.
you just have to try them out to see which you like better. the advantage of bigger frets is smoother bends.
GOOD SHIT MAN.....I DIDNT REALIZE U COULD PUT THE PICK-UPS BETWEEN1 AND 2...I'M GON TRY THAT ON WITH SOME NIGGY'S MILK PACE!!

@ghostyman666 I agree, and there a lot worse. I'm just saying that for its price its a great guitar. I personally prefer my strat over my Gibson Les Paul, but to each his own.
Austink1992 11 months ago
@Austink1992 I personally like guitars that are not the traditional style. Maybe one but that's it. For example I play bass. I have a B.C rich and a dean explorer. I prefer those. But I only have one fender. and of course for the bass it would be the jazz bass. But only because it's a 5 string. I just would not go and buy basses that look similar to each other.

Does a rosewood fingerboard affect the tone of the guitar compared to a maple fingerboard?
Sorry, can't seem to word the question right.
iBankai145 1 year ago
@iBankai145 Yes, a maple neck is usually a slightly brighter tone. Rosewood has a little more warmth.
Silmarillion1973 1 year ago
complete bullshit unless you are dealing with a 3way switch with 3 pickups. then you can get positions 2 and 4 by doing this. otherwise complete bullshit.
ledzeppelin4485 1 year ago
Might I suggest some more forethought, planning and actual Knowledge of the guitar before you review it.
Not only did you refer to the Middle Pickup as the Bridge you got the positions all wrong.
1 = Neck Only
2 = Neck and Middle
3 = Middle only
4 = Bridge and Middle
5 = Bridge only.
jayzakk72 1 year ago 110
@jayzakk72 According to Fender's own manuals the positions are
1= bridge only
2=bridge/middle
3=middle
4=middle/neck
5=neck
I agree with ledzeppelin on the "in-between" positions. I've been playing Strats since 1966 and they still rule!
Grzz51 1 year ago
@Grzz51
My Numbers were reversed in order, I guess it depends on what you call #1
The bridge or the neck but nonetheless the order was right??
jayzakk72 1 year ago
@jayzakk72 ...LOL....Since Fender calls the Bridge # 1, that's good enough for me. The rest fall in line. On the Support page @ Fender.com check out the service diagram........they tell it all. Sometimes people talk about that which they have no knowledge.
Grzz51 1 year ago
@jayzakk72 actually, position 1 is the bridge only, then work your up from there.

@jayzakk72
I was just about to post the same comment!!
Must be a custom-wiring! LOL!
Dragondicer 11 months ago
Now I'm really freaked out! Let me get this straight: in former days, with three way switches, you had those "in between sounds", which switched the PUs "out of phase". To get exactly THAT kind of tone, the 5 way switch was implemented. Position 2 and 4 do exactly THAT, what the "in between positions" previously did! Now, here's the bomber: in between sounds with a 5 way switch, switchinhg out of phase sounds out of phase (as said in the vid!!) !! THINK AGAIN, before posting a vid.
Dragondicer 11 months ago
@jayzakk72 Yea he's got a different wiring I'm assuming... I never understood why, though. I've always liked standard switching.
brossej07 10 months ago
@jayzakk72 except for the middle/bridge (he was pointing the pickup so you know what he means) he got the positions right so i don't understand the point of your comment

@jayzakk72 And the thing his is doing only works on the old 3-way strats ....

GLK2780 9 months ago
@GLK2780
And it seems that so far at least 30 other people agree with my original comment
jayzakk72 9 months ago 2
@GLK2780 Jayzakk72 is right... I've owned 3 different strats and I've played hundreds throughout my life, and I've never heard of a strat with that switching set up. Also the person in the video is also mistaken about getting the switch in between the positions.This was possible in the 1950s when it was a 3 way switch and musicians would try to find the position in between 1 and 2 and in between 2 and 3. This worked because it would use 2 pickups at once. But now strats come with a 5 way switch.

There is no in between1 and 2...position 2 and 4 are the"in between" sounds in reference to the original that had 3 positions. Each pup had it's own position and that's it. Some guys figured out that if you got the switch just right in between them, you could engage 2 pups at once, it caught on so much that fender made the 5 way switch...everbody that plays a strat knows that!

i have a stock squire guitar and every time i go to use the tremelo it goes outta tune wtf what do i do to make it stay in tune without replacing my tremelo or any other parts
joeyjeremiah1 1 year ago
@joeyjeremiah1 You don't use it! But in all seriousness, a lot of stratocaster players do not even equip their tremolo arm. Some people find it helpful to change the nut on the neck to a different material (graphite), while others find it useful to make adjustments to the bridge height / springs. It is important to remember that it is not a Floyd Rose and can not be used for crazy dive-bombs.

wat are the best pickups for a strat? also i was wondering what do Medium jumbo and jumbo frets mean? is the space between the frets bigger or smaller?
trumusichead 1 year ago
The difference is the height of the fret, not the distance between them. A jumbo is the tallest, which means when you depress the string, your not going to put very much pressure on the wood of the fretboard. Good for bending and fast playing. Medium-jumbo's are still pretty tall, but you press the wood more. Good for chrords and rhythm playing. EMG makes a killer set of pickups for Strats. David Gilmour uses them and you know what his tone is like. Rock on.
smacman68 1 year ago
@trumusichead it means that the wires that make up the frets themselves are bigger. most stratocasters have medium-sized or medium-jumbo frets, which basically means the metal fret wires are on the small side. most heavy metal guitars like Ibanez and ESP, for example, use Jumbo frets, which are a lot bigger than the frets on a strat. Schecter even makes guitars with EXTRA jumbo frets.
you just have to try them out to see which you like better. the advantage of bigger frets is smoother bends.
