  • life is amazing

  • This is actually not a single creature, but a colony of Polyps. These individuals come together and differentiate to perform different colonial functions. For example, some capture food, while others may defend or be used in reproduction. Their is a bit of controversy to weather the sail is a modified Polyp, or a Medusa. Pretty weird, huh?

  • @NickNewkum interesting. when you say they're individuals that come together, do you mean they're all born seperately then find each other after they're born and join together?

  • @ People calling this a creature. It is actually a colony of creatures called polyps. They are differentiated into different parts of the Man of War to perform different colonial functions. For example, some catch food, and some are for reproduction. Pretty weird, huh?

  • i have been stung by one of these and lets just say it would hurt less if someone jumped on your foot and the mark they leave stay for about a week not a pleasent experience but i do like their blue it wonderful

  • These technically aren't jellyfish, they are far more advanced

  • @iJamesPayton

Blue Bottle stings are rarely fatal to humans, although they can be. Like some jellyfish stings, they can be excruciatingly painful. The venom/pain can interfere with respiratory and/or cardiac functions.

  • wow that look so cool....from afar. I never wanna a close encounter from these

  • thanks for the video! Im doing a project for my zoology class, and this taught a little bit more. :)

  • BEAUTIFUL CREATURE I LIKE IT JELLYFISH

  • lol it looks like someone spilled Colgate toothpaste in the water :)

  • amazing creature. i mean it survived billions of years because it's tremendously effective... just perfect

  • amazing creature

  • I get stung by these all the time when surfing...and I have a REAL bad reaction to them :(

  • @subasurf So they're not fatal?

  • and thats how our intestines move

  • got stung my one once!

  • i was stung by a blue bottle as a child, worst pain i have ever felt in my life, it was like 3rd degree burns only 3 times as painful and the pain wouldn't stop no matter how much pain relief or gels they nurses put on it. if you see one of these things in the water GFTO as fast as possible.

  • is this your own?! i want one too... i would spend a large amount of money to get one here to germany.

  • *Portugese manowar

  • I got stung all over my neck by a man-of-war (blue-bottle)

It hurt for hours and hours! :(

  • It is actually a colony creature- not a single animal, but hundreds.

  • @douro20 o_o

  • Beautiful but deadly

  • so blue....I want to touch o.o ........

  • I gave one of these a hug once.

  • So interesting to watch when captive and not bobbing around in the ocean. No need to dodge tentacles while filming it. Good one.

  • it looks like bungee jumping

  • it looks like bungee jumping

  • The Portuguese had only caravels, carracks, and galleons. No Man of War ships. Only the English vessels were called that. And not a any of them even faintly resemble the jellyfish, whether square rigged or lateen rigged. There were no blue sails back then.

There is, however a morion helmet (google an image) with a ridge comb that has the exact same shape as the jellyfish. A morion helmet was worn by Portuguese men of war (soldiers).

  • i find the tentacles to be beautiful.

    the rest of it however...

    looks like an inflated condom.

  • its a wonderful color.. and its cool how the tenticles can move.

  • Bello, muy bello ☺

  • ah, the turtle's spaghetti dinner... a true dish.

  • Portuguese Man-of-war (english) = Caravela portuguesa (português)

  • Although dangerous, they really are beautiful creatures

  • 10 bucks to anyone who hugs one

  • Wow did you know there tentacles can be up to 60m and there sting is 10x more venom than a cobras

  • they are extremely dangerous and can kill people

  • instant perm

  • phoooarrr them things are nasty i got stung by a few of them at Oreti beach! eviiiil buggas :D

  • Show the whole thing, damnit

  • lol the songs from Jak 2

  • WOW

    =D

  • wow thats so weird

  • Hate these things along with fire coral and other species of jelly fish, they always mess up a good surf day.

But anyways i can't complain i'm lucky we don't have box jellyfish down here

  • drop a few of these instead of the atomic bomb~ pretty much do the same thing without the fallout~

  • I've seen this jelly fish now that I've got the blues.

  • What did the cavemen call these blue bottle jellyfish? I mean before bottles were invented???

  • i want to own one of those

  • ITS A MAN-O-WAR!

  • purdy

  • and how they have sex i mean how they get new jellys?

  • So blue is the new color of death. xD

  • Blue has always been the color of death in the PC world...it was just natural for nature to follow in it's path.

  • always has been really if you look at it lol .

Blue ringed octopus ? blue ringed stingray...thingy ? lol

  • actually, this isn't even a single organism, it's made up of 4 different individual life forms that unite in symbiosis.

  • can these kill u?

  • dude this is the one that will most definately kill you hah you dont wanna get near one of these theyll will mess you up

  • @miky261 they can kill you, my cousins have so many scars on they're backs cause of these thingys, they originated i portugal. just by touching you, you instantly die!

  • Within minutes as is my understanding.

  • Easily

  • within 1 hour without treatment

  • @miky261 I guess it can, but its probably rare, because i got stung by one of these before and (not to be cocky or anything) it wasn't so bad. My mom made a paste of baking soda and water, and after she applied it for a few minutes, it was like i was never stung in the first place. it even got rid of the pain.

  • @miky261

    yes they can.........

  • i think a box jelly fish has a brain including the eyes

  • jellyfishes, obelias, physalias, vellelas, they dont have brains or eyes or NS .they dont even have a head. they only have a mouth and an anus and some special defense cells.

  • @intox2211

You are right on all counts except two.

they do have a nervous system.

but it is not a centralized one, consisting of a

nerve web instead of a branching structure. And they do not have an Anus. Waste disposal and feeding is conducted by the same cardiovascular cavity. and this only pertains to each individual polyp.

Physalias is a type of Siphonophore and consequently being that it is a colonial organism contains many such cardiovascular cavities.

  • I'm just curious, what is a Portuguese man of war?

  • its a kind of jellyfish

  • it is a floating colony of polyps. They do not belong to the same class as "regular" jellyfish. They are in class hydrozoa. So, the Man of War is not one animal, but a colony of many. Pretty cool, huh?

  • @Andrea2075 wudn't it be MEN of war, then, in stead of MAN of war? I'm cofused x.x and what uif it wuz a CHIK?!

  • A "Portuguese man of war" was a kind of sailing ship made by Portugal with triangular sails. The top of the jellyfish looks like a triangular sail, so people named it after that kind of ship.

  • Wouldn't this be an awesome screen saver? It's gorgeous!

  • i like box jellyfish

  • @Jellyfishx3 "I like turtles"

  • its actually a polyp which sprouts medusas(actual jellyfish) from its body.

  • ...nothing showed on the surface of the water but some

patches of yellow, sun-bleached Sargasso weed and the purple, formalized, iridescent,

gelatinous bladder of a Portuguese man-of-war floating dose beside the boat. It turned on

its side and then righted itself. It floated cheerfully as a bubble with its long deadly purple

filaments trailing a yard behind it in the water.

Agua mala, the man said. You whore.

Hemingway - The Old Man and the Sea

  • But the bird was almost out of sight now and nothing showed on the surface of the water but some

patches of yellow, sun-bleached Sargasso weed and the purple, formalized, iridescent,

gelatinous bladder of a Portuguese man-of-war floating dose beside the boat. It turned on

its side and then righted itself. It floated cheerfully as a bubble with its long deadly purple filaments trailing a yard behind it in the water. Agua mala, the man said. You whore. -Hemingway

  • Yes it is, in fact its one of the bigest in the world. found in (Down under) Ozzy!

  • I was just in Cuba and I encountered a bunch of these guys on the beach shores. I am absolutely fascinated with them, I have been since like grade one when I did a project on them. I was slightly disappointed when I learned that their float was only like 6 inches max. I wanted it to be like eight feet wide. Oh well. :)

  • preciosipnotizante!!!!! O.o O.o O.o parece una cortina de flecos fashion

  • O0o!! I wanna touch it! lol

  • It's.... beautiful.

  • beautiful color, but the tentacles creep me out...

  • MY sis would be like " Eww Burn It!! That's So Gross!"

  • it looks like its playing the music with its tenticles lol

  • Man of War is a PC game

  • Nature is awe inspiring, nice montage.

  • they are the dangerous jellyfish on the world

  • @rockitnow989 no thats the box jellyfish

  • hahaha, u actaully think this is a box jelly?

  • actually the Box Jelly fish and the uraganji, are the most dangerous, the Bluw bottle cannot kill all it can do is leave a nasty sting that feels like 500 needles in th skin, and a rash where the sting was, thats it,

  • makes my skin shiver

  • so beautyful but so deadly

  • People have died but they aren't "so deadly", I've been stung 3 times since living on the beach for 10 years. Twice on the legs while sitting on my surf board and once under my arm. If you get stung don't stress about dying. It's like a bee sting, some people just have a bad reaction.

  • i have a extreamly bad reaction to upper body stings, atm i live on the the coast of Australia in QLD and there are countless of blue bottles evrywhere, they pile up on each other when the surf brings them in, and you can stand on them when there dead, it sounds like ur standing on bouble rap, yeah when i get stung on upper body my right shoulder begins to ache and i cant breath, scaary stuff

  • can u pop the jelly like with a needle? i always have been wondering that

  • they are sort of beautiful..

  • They really are.

  • its like my blue sweater has been shredded... o-o

  • its gonna make our summer miserable

  • I don't know what's wrong with me but it... it looks... delicious...

ANYWAY great choice of music. A truly magnifient group of organisms, that one!

  • so cool!!!!

  • bungie wires lol

  • this is not as deadly as box jellyfish!!!

  • @ellivro99

Blue bottles aren't really deadly unless they're fucking huge.

    No, still not very deadly.

Ive been stung by quite a few, it burns and stings but goes away after a few days.

Noting vaguely life threatening about it unless you're a baby or a senior xD

  • got a pin??......

  • aren't hydras jellyfish too?

  • not really man o war is kinda alone

  • True jellyfish are in the class Scyphozoa. Hydras are in class Hydrozoa. Same phyla though, Cnidaria.

  • yea this isnt a jellyfish its a colony of tiny cnidarian's called hydra's

  • cool

  • ature is amazingly beautiful, but can be deadly as you see by this peaceful looking jelly fish

  • I is not a jelly fish.

  • deadly, but pretty.

  • lol no

  • It's beautiful!

  • looks beautiful

  • oh god. I got stung by one of these really badly when I was 5.. the tentacles got wrapped around my ankle and wouldn't come off... hurts.. like yuo're being cut.

  • apparently (i heard) when you just leave them on and do nothing they dont sting, they just float away after a while, though i would find it hard to resst to get the hell out of there and start shaking my ancle :/

  • their so beatiful and inviting....like the Cullens! lol

  • i got stung by a bunch of babys of those in hawaii

  • You obviously didn't get stung or you were told wrong because there is no such thing as a baby Man of War because they're just a mash up of different polyps. Meaning it's not one single animal. It's a bunch of other organisms together ranging from completely different ages.

  • well jees you dont have to be such an ass about it u act like its wrong to make mistakes

  • umm pain?

  • se llama así "cb portuguesa" posiblemente porque unos marinos los descubrieron en las aguas de Portugal

bueno, al menos eso lo lei en un libro de animales que hay en mi casa :P

  • i would cry if i got stung by one that big ive gotten stung in the same place like 3 times today! but this would scare me

  • nice vid

  • It is disgusting.

  • how could you say that about such a beutiful and unique animal

  • ive been stung by this! I was about five, and i can still remember it like it happened yesterday. OUCH.

  • song?

  • Look under stats & data. Cheers.

  • i got burned by one of thoose when i was in usa, aouch that hurt!

  • realy I thougth they were deadly ...

  • nice music..very befitting

  • who are you? Will Smith from 6 pounds?

  • che bestia di merda!! zozza sporca zozza!

  • "A Portuguese Man O' War is not a single animal, but rather a siphonophore a colony of four kinds of minute, highly modified individuals, which are specialized polyps and medusoids."

    From wikipedia. Thats amazing...

  • oh my fuckin god that son of a bitch is big

No sabia...

y otra pregunta, cada tentaculo es un ser vivo, o cómo?

  • it is cool

  • Yo this is a sexy jelly fish.

  • that it is! =D

  • How can youu kill them??

  • take em out of the water

  • seaturtles are eating them

  • precioso!! en que acuario se puede ver ese animal? (q sea en españa q es ahi dond vivo :P

la pega es q es peligroso :(

  • I was stung by a blue bottle in Australia, didn't enjoy it one bit to be honest.

  • I live in Portugal xD

Why is it called Portuguese Man-O-War

  • Because it is called there Caravela (the name of the jellyfish), that is also the name of those ships that discovered Brazil in the 16th Century. So Caravela in English means Portuguese-Man-Of-War that is also the name of this thing.

  • Because the Portuguese had the most fearsome and deadly battleships in the world in old times.

  • not exactly, along the top of the air filled sac resembles 15th - 16th century portugese battleship sails, hence the name, they also are not jellyfish, they belong to a different class called siphonophores, It is not one animal, but in fact a colony of individuals.

  • It/they is/are at the limits of grammar. If it/they develope time travel then they will/did/have exceeded the capability of humans to describe its/their actions.

  • i rly hate this son of a bitch. i always get stung by a small one everytime i go to a beach. but once a huge one stung me. the tentacles wrapped around my left leg (knee to down). and i had to take the tentacles off with my bare hands.

  • when i went to hawii and visited my family members there i got stung by 3 on my back and both my feet and if you step on them they pop

  • Portuguese Man of War sounds like a my chemical romance song

  • that looks like a shit load of sting

  • hmmm i wonder what will happen if you get a sharp needle and pop it? will it die?

  • Probably sink, fix itself and carry on as usual is my guess.

  • omg it can fix it self again like a bubble?!? damnnn

  • I have stepped on plenty of these as they float up on the beaches. Only to protect myself though, I think they only rely on the air pocket to float, so it would just resume stinging, but not on top of the water as per normal.

  • no prob not cos theyre cells not a ballon

  • how come all the beautiful things are dangerous?

  • is it odd that I think that's a beautiful color? lol. too bad they're so dangerous.

btw, what is the name of the background music? I've heard it before, but have never found the title.

  • It's not odd that it is a beautiful color because the brighter the color the more poisonous the animal is when it comes to poisonous animals. So you could tell how poisonous this one is lol.

  • thats extremley dangerous

  • beautiful color, though

  • yeah.

    that looks painful.

  • ive been stung by a man of war (almost died!)

  • almost died dude i bik stung by them alot of times and the worst that i get is a rash

  • they can actually kill you it depends on the amount of toxin you recieve.. if enough enters your blood it can cause cardiac arrest

  • omgggg =o

  • In 1956, near Aptos/Rio del Mar, CA, a Port.-m-of-w wrapped around my skinny 7-yr-old leg, thanks to Dad (nearby deep-sea fishing) knowledge gained in Navy during South Pacific War, the thing was removed. Horrid pain for a kid, strangled my calf. Am now 60, and soon will have the varicose vein creature caused (giant saphenous vein) removed - it's increasingly swelled over years to large varicosity. Dad was shocked to see one away from "islands." He was one cool Father!

  • me gustaria cojer una tijeras y....clac¡¡¡¡ cortarle los tentaculos, o tambien coger una aguja y petarle esa bolsa tan rara que tiene como cabeza

  • OMG!!! Ihate jellyfishes they are so ugly and theyre making me scared xDD

i was attacked by an fire jellyfish it hurt so much

  • they don't actually attack you.. its more like you accidentally happen to be in its way

  • the man o war is not tecnicaly a jellyfish

  • well this ugly thing has managed to enter the mediterranean :S i hate jellyfish

  • yes it managed to...was planning a wonderful summer...:S

  • Me too Im scared :S
