the pulse Vu setup is pretty cool in itself but i think i'd rather stick with build a stereo VU meter using a pair of lm3916 and having the leds on either side of disc drive

Yes, you have to open up the console to install it, thus voiding your warranty.

have you got a power extender attached to this wii?? i have got a hot rock on my wii and a pulsevu 2 atm, but am thinking about getting ether a green or blue xcm case with leds. will a power extender make it look any better ?

No power extender is needed for this Wii, because the PulseVU supports up to 18 LEDs without the PE.

I haven't seen how the chameleon case is set up. It might work, but would depend on a lot of things.

... am I the only one that thinks it's more awesome that you used a Commodore 64 monitor to show it off? I used to use one of those for our Atari 2600, NES, all the way up until N64! They actually do a pretty good job too.. never thought I'd see someone else use them... :)

does this have some kind of mic to pic up the sounds to change the lighting? or does it pick up the differences in sound directly thought the computer components?

It works directly by capturing the audio output from the system. There is no mic, so it only captures the system's audio, not ambient noise.
