Should you first orient the map with the compass so that the map grids are aligned North to South. A

You say you have to stick to the compass bearing. You can navigate around bogs/ponds etc. by adjusting your direction and counting pases.
(Say -45d a 230 paces(called a leg)+90d a same leg of 230 paces; again turn -45d and be on your original bearing.)
(Done square:-90d, pacecount,+90d (original bearing, but off line),+90d same pacecount,-90d on original bearing in line.)
May I ask why you need to stand feer apart? And what is the best place to store a compass (say to the next hike/trek)?
