Full on offense didn't work for the first 2 minutes of the match, did you think that was going to change? You're fast as hell, let him come to you and punish him.
Just because there are threads on spin-dash and all these other tricks doesn't mean you should use them over and over again as your Sonic bible. Just fight differently and stop being so black and white.
Stop running directly at your people. Let them come to you. @_@
but once the G&W was ahead in %.... the G&W has no need to approach. If time runs out, he wins. Sonic is forced to approach..... although he shouldn't have done it so often and so predictably.
Watch your space control, try to see which parts of the stage are open to the G&W. Don't try to hit him, just hit the space around him where you expect him to go :) But yeah this matchup is crazyhard IMO, I cringed because I woulda got wrecked just like you did :(
