@Blunty3000 Only thing that stopped me from seeing this is that there are NO IMAX THEATERS ANYWHERE NEAR WHERE I LIVE! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE! JUST BUILD ONE ALREADY! Sorry, but I'm pretty pissed about this. Nice vid though.
I thought Leonardo DiCaprio did a decent job, but you're right. They should have gotten someone with a deeper, "God-like" voice. But all in all, this film was amazing. You really get a sense of the vast immensity that is space, and it makes you feel so small and insignificant as compared to the size of our universe. I remember coming out of the theater as if I'd returned from somewhere alien and mysterious, coming back to the familiarity of Earth. The grass seemed a bit greener the way home.
Wait, I-max still uses film? that's kind of lame. I would have though they would be using a 4k digital projector or something. That would be why i though avatar looked jerky, its still only running at 24fps!
@MasterGravitron All large format IMAX theatres still use film. Digital cant' yet even come close to IMAX film quality. You would need at least a 16k digital projector to replicate the quality of 15/70 IMAX film, which doesn't exist. The digital IMAX theatres, while better than a standard digital theatre because of the dual projectors, is a joke compared to the 6+ story IMAX film based theatres. And ALL theatres whether digital or film still run all their content at 24fps. And 80% still use film
The projection room was really interesting. However, I couldn't believe how irritating the narrator was! What was more irritating were his comments on the voice of Leonardo DiCaprio. A little more humility please Blunty!
Have you seen Inception? I've not seen it yet, but wondered if your opinion had changed on Leo since seeing it... I keep reading rave reviews about the movie, but for the sole reason that Leo is in it I've hesitated in going to see it.
I'll probably go see Hubble 3D anyway, thanks to your review.
I wish all 3d movies were in Imax 3d, they have nailed it, I mean regular 3d doesnt really pop out of the screen that much, but Imax gets like in your face and looks AMAZING
Remember the old series Cosmos, Carl Sagan was a classic and showed the elements of star stuff like no other, remember his real life periodic table? If only every science teacher was like him we would all be rocket scientists.
Unfortunately I won't be able fly over to Sydney to see it. I'll have to be content with seeing it at the Kennedy Space Center, home of the world's largest twin IMAX® theater. I do fully agree with Blunty on DiCaprio - a terrible choice and I think James Earl Jones would have been a much better alternative.
I used to run projectors at a movie theater and always wanted to get to run an IMAX projector. IMAX is the only real 3D. The fact the film companies putting 3D on the smaller screens is sickening.
How can you not like leondardo dicaprio he's one of the best actors of this generation? I wouldn't think he's be a good voice over actor either but he's a fantastic actor none the less.
@lizardking89 Oh please, he's a charmless poon who wouldn't have been able to get acting work in the strength of his "talent" alone if he wasn't "pretty". he has failed to convince me in any role I've ever seen him in.
@Blunty3000 He's only won an academy award and been nominated 3 other times. He was amazing in Basketball diaries, Gilbert Grape and the Departed you mustn't have seen those :P
I just got back from seeing Hubble 3D for the 3rd time. My mind has been blown 3 times.
Our IMAX's screen here in the Quad Cities is 6 stories high compared to Sydney's 8 story tall screen so I can only imagine how much more immersive Sydney's is...
@nirc01 The first take I did I called them Spacemonkies, but it felt almost demeaning somehow... plus I didn't want to confuse them with the ACTUAL monkeys they sent into space, which were not monkey, but Apes... but I digress...
I saw hubble 3D at the London Science Muesum IMAX on Friday! It was really quite amazing and how the complex, layered images taken by the hubble tenescope were made IMAX just leaves me speechless!
You know, I do appreciate that your videos are usually about topics that no one really talks about. Most of the times it's pretty important, and damn right funny.
I to can't sand DiCaprio, never have, probably never will, I just hope de does not destroy Shutter Island, if it is any good to begin with... have you seen it Blunty, and if so, what did you think?
The third ever IMAX in the world was in Bradford, 10 minutes on the train away from me. It's in the National Media Museum and there's a part where you can see into the projection room which looks exactly like this.
@anoyingfly maybe because the rendering time for movies like this are probably super long and would cost a ton of money, then double that for 3d, im not an expert by any means but thats just an educated guess
@anoyingfly Several things make it difficult, one, mainly the HUGE amounts of heat generated quickly damage the digital image panels, two the huge resolution make the file sizes stupidly big. They're working on making it practical.
That's interesting, the IMAX where I live actually has a video camera placed behind the two projectors, so while you're waiting in line, you can see them preparing the film and all that.
