  • "With British Pacific Fleet in the Far East and Pacific theatres. Fireflies carried out attacks on oil refineries"

    Detail

The British navy aircrew shot down in one of these raids in the East Indies were buried alive by their Japanese captors - 2 weeks before the war ended.

  • @001Dixie

I'm 63 stupid. Even a dolt like you can do the fucking math...You really need to shut the fuck up and crawl back under your rock...

  • @001Dixie

Mendacious dick wad? What a pip-squeak you are...Want to go a round? Or do you fight like you talk, Santa? What a weanie...! LOL!

  • @001Dixie

Two tours, air force, Thailand, 1967-1971,. You can go fuck yourself now bitch. Something tells me that is the only action you'll see, for sure...Moron...

  • @001Dixie You may have thesaurus/com right at the top of your favourites list, but nothing other than a decent education will eradicate your shitty syntax.

You may think me incapable of forming sentences without using expletives, but I can at least form sentences. Your combination of obscure words and poor syntax marks you out so clearly as a youtube wanker. That's onanist to you thesaurus boy.

  • @001Dixie I see you enjoy the old thumbs up: you give yourself plenty of them. Next time, instead of a thumbs up, why not stick your head up your arse and see if that's where you lost your fucking brain.

  • no point in arguing over who did what or who were the senior partners, we beat the evil bastards, and that's what counts.

  • @001Dixie

And every year America fought the shorter the two wars lasted...Get it little girl? Now leave the conversation to the real adults, and go play with your Barbies instead...

  • @001Dixie

If only that were true! The British Empire may have done more than the Americans. But the true winners of the 2nd world war where the Russians. The Nazis would never have been defeated without the mighty forces of the Soviet Union who accounted for at least 60 percent of the victory and in the process lost 20 million people to which the losses of Britain and America are just a drop in the ocean.

  • @ZKMX7 I thought that WW2 involved the defeat of Imperial Japan as well as Nazi Germany. And all the Russians did in that was to invade Manchuria the day after Nagasaki. The US destroyed the Japanese navy and performed the island hopping war. The British and mostly the Indian army destroyed the Japanese army in Burma. The Russians lost 20+ million dead cos they had shite generals. Biggest, best equipped army in the world in 1941.

  • @ZKMX7 The west provided the 60% of Red army motorized vehicles. The US alone provided 100% of it's amphibious vehicles, 10% of it's tanks, most of it's trucks and to replace rail losses 2000 locomotive and half a million tons of rail line. At the same time US land forces in the Pacific suffered defeats due to lack of equipment. Without western supplies the Red army could not have made it's huge advances. Stalin also rejected Western offers to provide troops for the eastern front

  • Great document! I love british navy planes, it is wonderful watching them in action :-)

The only thing, I think british music would dress better the images.

  • America was manipulated into WWI. If we had never entered, there's a good chance that WWII wouldn't have happened.

  • What a great video, we are restoring a Firefly to (hopefully if all goes well) flying condition for an air show in the fall.

  • As ever Bomberguy a great video, and music, do keep them coming

  • great video, thanks bomberguy!

  • Nice plane, looks very functional and deadly!

  • @001Dixie Who is telling you all this stuff from America? I bet you don't even know anyone there.

  • @001Dixie the Americans say they won the war because they fought on two fronts, mainly on their own. its not britans fault, a lot of their resources had been depleted, and they lacked the manpower to match germany. in any war, to be able to win while surrounded on both sides is one helluva victory. they should be proud of it, thats not to say that other nations shouldnt be proud of their contributions. Russia and Britan certainly made a difference. i have to disagree about the others though

  • WW2 era Fairey Military-Aircraft designs enjoyed only a very mixed-bag, up-&-down level of success. The pre-war Fairey Battle was, regrettably, a disaster, real early on. This Firefly design enjoyed more success .. incl post-war. But the British Co's Avro, Hawker De Havilland & Supermarine produced far more consistently good, capable designs during the same period. Congrats on th post - v. rare footage .. well done.

  • my great grandad was responsible for the production of this plane. he worked for fairey for 40 years, and got denied in the RAF 3 times because he was too valuable as an engineer

  • @001Dixie i agree with you there i talked with a few americans before on chat roulette about the world war my grandfather was in the british navy fighting coast of australia from the japs and most of them are convinced that they were the only ones that saved Australia from getting taken over i find it funny they think that. at the end of the day they are in the spotlight of it all

  • So sick of the British moaning about Americans. You're boring!

  • there's one of these at Gillespie Field in El Cajon,CA and it still flies on occasion

  • 2:08. "...and pretty good shooting it was!" It was indeed - every shot and every rocket hit the ocean it was aimed at.

  • @MarsFKA Hehe

  • The Firefly distinguished itself in the Mediterranean as air cover for convoys and did well against the Regia Aeronautica- paticularily the SM-79 Savoia Marchetti torpedo bomber. Not to be confused with the Fairey Battle ground attack craft that suffered heavily over Sedan in 1940 and withdrawn from service.

  • a strange fighterplane...did it ever score any kills as an escort during the attacks on Tirpitz at Tromsø or during the attacks against the Japs on Sumatra

  • @001Dixie But a really BIG part of the team. US outproduced the whole British empire in war items about 10 to 1 including warships

  • @jakefree25 Certainly US was a huge part of the team, and this was largely enabled by Britain paying for US involvement in both world wars: planes, tanks, guns, ships, trucks, jeeps etc, for about 90 years it was about $80 billion per year, plus they had to give us all their top technology (radar, engines, computers, decrypting, engines), plus huge chunks of land around the world, much still used as US bases.

  • Firefly was ideal for the illiterate RAF pilot; there was no requirement for fliers at this time to be able to read. It was found Reading got in the way of flying.

  • @001Dixie The USSR destroyed about 80% of the Wehrmacht, as well as in WW l the US forces hardly distinguished themselves, often using lamentable mass tactics the French & British outgrew

  • British carrier planes got the short shrift, they were using US F$F Wildcats long after the US went to Hellcats & Corsairs

  • @jakefree25 Who used the Seafire? The carrier based version of the spitfire?

  • @edtrine The Fleet Air Arm got the short shrift when it came to aircraft compared to the RAF.

  • looks like a decent plane, all other planes were outdated and replaced after a few years but this one just kept on serving faithfully

  • my grandads brother used to fly this plane

  • What a beast! And to think it was that quick using the same engine as the much smaller spitfire.

  • Canada

  • Canada

  • OK... I'll wade into the mud.. without the US - we (the commonwealth) would have lost Britain. the industrial might of the US was the linch-pin of the whole thing - that and the germans deciding they should invade Russia and have a two front war... scary, but if one of the two things had not taken place - or different - the world may have been a very scary place at the moment...

Oh - and UK had two beaches at D-Day. The US had two. Name the other country that had a beach. (hint: Juno)

  • If the luftwaffe had continued bombing British airfields for just two weeks longer, they would practically have defeated the RAF. Instead they launched a massive raid on london to 'draw out the fighters', bad move ;)

If they had bothered keeping an active spy network in Britain their decisions might have been different.

Even the loss of the RAF may not have left us completely open to invasion, the Royal Navy would still have got in the way.

  • @piper131313

    Canada

  • 001Dixie, your comments are interesting, but wrong. 85% of the allied war effort in WWI was sustained by France. Great Britain played a certain role, but not more. WWII gives another picture: if you compare time and number of divisions facing the axe forces, than you are right, that the british provided from 39 till end of 42 the main war effort against Nazi-Germany and its allies. But, please do not minimize the role of the USA.

  • Bomberguy is the best!

  • here here good riddance to bad luck.

  • Perhaps you could actually serve a useful purpose on here. Please do explain why so many British based YT military posts are infested with US idiots who post utter drivel? I have seen this on everything from the return of the RAF Vulcan to flight last year, through to videos associated with D-Day. Why do Americans have such insecurity problems that they feel the need to rubbish the achievements of others? VERY odd and rather pathetic really

I think that previously made quote says it all

  • It's because most Americans think they are the only country that matters in the world, they have 10 percent of the population and all of the conceit. I would wish for thier demise but they are right next door and some are my friends. Never mind this bozo, England did damn well for it's size it's a powerful nation. And anyway the Spitfire was the best handling fighter all thorough the war bravo!

  • @YrHen i apologize. We have a big country and there's lots of idiots in it. There's good sound minded people here too..it's a shame the world doesn't hear from them as often.

  • I must apologise, Schickel, I had no idea you had a sense of humour!

Friends in Hollywood! What can one say!

BUT apart from all that, Whats' your opinion of the flying characteristics of the Fairey Firefly?- no cheating now, and having little peaks at Wiki!

  • "shaly handwriting"

get that from Wiki did we? Schickel!!

Your a sad lad! Try typing a bit slower, it'll match your brain patterns!

  • Hi Wiki man! Oh dear now we have to discuss all the problems with OUR empire! My you do flop around don't you! Stick to WW2, you're such an expert!

Check Wikipedia so that you know what hub caps are, just in case you clean the wrong bit!

ps please excuse the shaky handwriting!

  • WW2 by Wikipedia and Shickelgruber. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing in your case?

Most of us get a great deal of pleasure out of Bomberguy's posts, Now be a good chap pop off and clean the hub caps on your 3yr old car!

  • Really?

  • "Hardened US marines"

    That sounds SO dodgy!!!

    LMAO

  • If Britain fell then Italy/Germany would control Gibraltar.

Its gonna be kinda hard to get through there into the Med

  • Well if Britain is defeated in that scenerio, then that means that all the German/Italians who were historically fighting in the Med and North Africa have nothing to do.........except wage war on the USA from the East.

  • The US would NOT have done fine without Britain.

What condition would your landing craft be in buy the time they got to Normandy?

Its a hell of a long way across the Atlantic.

How would your B-17's manage to bomb Germany if they had to come all the way from the USA?

Eisenhower was an idiot who had been a staff officer all his career.

Then theres all the friendly fire incidents, cant you lot tell who's the enemy?

    LOL.

The RAF bombed at night whilst you muppets bombed in broad daylight!!!!!

  • I hope you know that the USA could not have taken on the Germans, Japanese and Italians all by yourself.

Besides, it would be along way across the Atlantic for you to even get to Germany without first using our "shitty little island" as a base.

Face it, we needed each other to win WW2

(Shame you lot turned up 2 years late though!)

  • The US certainly is a modern world power.

But that still didnt stop 9/11 happening though did it?

  • I suppose the poor crews who couldnt penetrate the Tigers armour would care.

Just remind me again, how many years did your "world power" spend in Vietnam before going home with your tails between your legs!!

  • Yes and only the Americans would keep the puny 75mm gun on the Sherman tank despite the fact that we British had developed a 17 pounder capable of penetrating the Tigers armour.

Apparently the Yanks didnt want a foriegn gun on their tank.

I admit that we British have our faults but the Americans are far from perfect too.

  • shut up u silly faggorts , england is much better than which ever shit hole you come from , and i noticed your speeking in english , its clear if your american you atualy have alot to thank england for such as your language, but being an american your would overlook that , and as for world war 2 you only joined towards the end and didnt make that much of an impact in terms of helping british soldiers as you were fighting japanise and we were fightin prity much everyone els .

  • Dickhead- perhaps the USN wouldn't have lost so many carriers if they hadn't used wooden decks. Thanks for being a cunt.

  • what a stupid bunch of sweeping, general comments Rabbi. you're an embacil - shut up.

  • And the Brits fail once again!

  • Think a touch of jealousy.. We brits have built the best looking aircraft in the world! Spitfire, Sea Fury, Vulcan, Lightning etc etc..The list is too long! Up the brits!

  • Eh.P-51 put's em all to shame.

  • @motokid032 Apart from in the ground attack role and once the US had put the Rolls Royce engine in you mean!

  • Good point mate.

The Lightning pissed all over the USAF F-104 in time to altitude trials.

Infact, even when she was retired in the 1980's there wasnt much that would out climb a Lightning.

  • You sound like someone that runs there mouth with no clue The U.S. did have fighter/bombers that were 2-seaters like the advenger (which had great losses) and your best fighters (p-51) was only at its best with british made engines (merlin) Infererior so later in the war? would you call Dec 7 1941 late in the war? i would ..It was when the U.S. woke up to the rest of what was going on ..Out of a clip of aircraft you talk about males and fairies and men?? is there something you want to say here?

  • The Seafire also had inadequate range for a naval fighter.

  • my great unkle was aboard hms striker in norway when they torpedoed and sunk the 1st german u boat with a firefly.i have photos of the king and monty presenting the crew with medals.

  • theres a firefly 1 at duxford that the aircraft restoration company is going to restore to airworthy condition : )

it was found along with another one in a barn in sweden.

  • They started without catapults?

  • Prop planes accelerate to lift off speed faster than jets do. ;) Most would be able to get off the ground at ~110 mph whereas our heavier jets need higher speeds, and the perpulsion doesn't accelerate on the ground as fast.

  • They weren't invented till the FAA brought jets into service. Modern aircraft carrier operations would not be possible without the british inventions of the steam catapult, arrestor wires and landing light aids.

  • Up to and during World War II most catapults were hydraulic.

  • The Firefly was used against the Japanese in WW2, with good sucess. The British felt a 2 man crew was needed for their naval fighters. A great aircraft, and some great video too!

  • I was in Duxford on summer -03, when Firefly crashed few hunderd meters from us. Both men were killed. Well, you can imagine peoples feelings. I saw last seconds, but didnt catch it on video. I turned video to crashsite just after it happened. You can hear "omg" from hundreds of mouths (good english?). Very sad.

  • thats one BIG torpedo bomber!

  • Its NOT a Torpedo Bomber, its a Fighter!!

  • Pretty slow fighter I guess, not exactly a seafire.

  • Thats because the Seafire was a conversion of the Spitfire which is a land based fighter, hence the advantages of a single crew, smaller dimensions and higher speed. The Firefly was designed solely as a Naval fighter and so was forced to have two crew members for better safety hence larger dimensions and lower speed. The Seafire was not perfect as it had awfull landing characteristics and deck handling, because of the narrow track landing gear. I would go with the Firefly everytime!

  • Oh I see, I never just realised it was a fighter. It is so massive after all!

  • que videos mas lindos ,te felicito por tu contribucion a la aeronautica, saludos

  • Excellent! Thanks, BG!

  • A nice video. Good work again....

  • Keep 'em coming, Bomberguy!

  • Remember to rate the video, guys- Bomberguy deserves 5 stars for this RARE vid!!

  • Great footage of the fireflies being taken out by the meteors

  • Great plane! Never knew about it! Thanks for such a great post ( and all your posts) simply excellent!

  • Nothing less than beautiful!
