@spokanetrish It's probably Comfrey. Are the leaves hairy and rather stiff? the flower color can indeed vary. mine do as well. It's good to eat some fresh too - I pick five leaves in the morning now, roll them up a few at a time like a cigar, and eat it on the way to work. It reminds me of Borage; hairy, slightly cucumber like, and muciligeous. It's almost spinach like as well. I'm getting used to it; even rather fond of it! It's good as a mulch too.
@spokanetrish You can harvest it three times a year and feed roses & tomatoes & other things with it. The roots mine the soil for trace minerals and deposit them in the leaves. Even small root pieces will grow. You could have a big patch quickly if you wanted. We have Foxgloves all over the place here.
Evidently, I have had the comfrey in the back for 3 years now (LOL), and I left it there just because the bee's loved the flowers so much. Then I found a mullein coming up in my mint patch, I came to youtube and google to to identify the comfrey. Yes on the foxglove, I know that one, and you are wise to mention how dangerous that can be--we don't get wild foxglove here. My plant looks just like yours, but with a burgundy flower.
Thank you for this vid! I was almost certain I had Comfrey in my yard, and this confirms it...now I will move it to a more respectable (and less likely the men will move it) area. My mother always mixed Comfrey with all her teas =)
@spokanetrish You're welcome! I get lots of views on this video - I never would've thought! but I'm son used to my plants being around. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW the difference between this and Foxgloves - Digitalis. Foxglove leaves are not hairy and more rounded and thinner. Comfrey leaves are very hairy and stiffer and more pointed. Foxglove can kill you pretty easily. The flowers are easy to tell apart. So are the leaves though, once you get familiar.
Thank you very much! ;p It seems to be almost all the Comfrey's doing for that, as I don't really do anything to it except eat it! The full sun in that spot has brought out the best in it I think. Your small pipes have a very nice sound! ;p
WOW, I though you spoden a kitty cat somewhere by the bush. Your country site is great. Do you cultivate your own honey? If you don't with all that space you could you. :)
Nope! :) No cats in this one! Just comfrey! I've thought of cultivating honey when I was young, but never learned all about it. Yes, it is alot of peaceful space! I do like to grow lots of things that bees like, like red clover.
Well, the flowers WERE purple, like yours, but now that the hot weather has come on the flowers are burgundy.
