Well as a producer 1st u have to be the best u can be at the music "YOU" make aka having your own sound.

2nd it helps to live in a city that gives you access to many people in the business (NY or LA r the top choices) so u can approach the artists, managers & record label execs with your material.

the rest really is LUCK which I define as "when preparation & opportunity meet".
