Cardinals are the state bird of Indiana and stay here year-round. The young males are a vivid red, the darker ones are older. The females are a brownish color with hints of red, mainly the wing tips. If I recall they mate for life. They're in my backyard all year and are gorgeous to watch.
@Bluewolf2028 - I'm not really sure on that one - this cardinal was attracted to a commercial bird food, I'm not sure which part of it they enjoyed most, but I do think they like cherries (the mix had dried cherries in it) ~
@greensatva - That's very possible, a lot of animals lose color as they get older... this one might be a female too, they're less bright than the males are when it comes to their redness.
@taburineagle - considering what you say about them getting darker with age, this is an old Mr. Cardinal! I've seen the females, and they're brown, with red streaks on crest, wings and tail. [Psalm 19]
@rafazolario - I'm not really sure what you're asking - I tried to translate it, but I don't really understand the translation either - :) This bird is native to this area.
@Jazzgirl8888 - You're welcome, I'm glad you liked it! I'd love to get more snowy shots (next year - I've had enough snow for this year! :)) of Cardinals - they really stand out against a snowy backdrop!
lol they're so funny. My Cardinals HATE to be watched. This guy, however, knows he's being watched and LIKES it. He's curious. He grabs a seed and turns toward the camera! Great video!
Thanks for saying so! Sorry for the late comment, been busy lately - :) It's very rare to get shots of cardinals like this (or it least it has for me), so this one was a very lucky shot!
We have a fat little cardinal that returns year after year. I know its the same bird because he has a routine...when the blue jays sound the dinner alarm.. he comes and perches on my dog's kennel. He waits for the bluejays to leave then he eats the dog food. He's the only cardinal I see with a smaller brown bird....and i think the even smaller birds are chikadees..they are soo cute.
I wish cardinals come were I live, the birds that I see the most are finches, sparrows, mourning doves, mockingbirds, anna's hummingbirds, a few scrub jays and some others... the colorful birds seem to live on the east side xD
Cardinals are very beautiful, especially against a backdrop of snow - they really stand out! I like bluejays too, they're each "colorful" in their own way, it's interesting how some of them tend to blend in with their surroundings (mostly sparrows) - cardinals *definitely* stand out!
For this video, I used a Sony DCR-VX2000 camcorder, on a Bescor MP-101 motorized panhead, the camera hooked up to a DVD recorder and using a LANC controller to control the zoom and focus.
Thanks! This video is before I started shooting in HD, and it's also before YT had high quality uploads - which is saying something! :) I should get some more video of the feeder sometime this spring.
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you liked it! I really need to do some more birdfeeder shots now that I have my HD cam - if only it were a bit more hospitable weather-wise lately... :)
Yes! Definitely! I have yet to capture a shot of a male cardinal against a snowy backdrop, but they stand out beautifully against such a scene! My favorite birds are gulls, something some people don't agree with (:D), but cardinals are extremely awesome birds!
Thank you! For this video, I used a Sony DCR-VX2000 camcorder - I've also been using an HD camcorder for my most recent stuff (check out the "December Squirreliness" video on my Profile page), I haven't had the chance to get any shots like this with the HD cam yet though - when the weather has the chance to warm up a bit, I'll try that out!
I live north of Memphis TN and I counted 12 male cardinals feeding in my yard this morning... thanks for the close up. I don't think I could get close enough to film... HA!
Really?? That's awesome that you saw so many at once! I've seen 3 at the most at one time, and 2 of them are usually a mating pair. This camera was on a tripod with a looong remote cable hooked up to it - I just set the camera up as a lark, but as soon as I saw the cardinal there, I went "ooh!" and just zoomed in to it!
Thank you for saying so! They're definitely beautiful birds! I don't see them too often here, but I got lucky this time - that's great that you get a chance to see them every day!
It is! They especially stand out against a snowy backdrop - all white and colorless, then this radiant red bird just sitting on a tree branch! That would be an awesome shot to get!
Thank you for saying so! This was before I had HD to play with - :) I should do another bird feeder setup and see what I can get now! That bird feeder is no more, but we have another one now, it's supposed to be squirrel-proof, but the squirrels have even *more* fun with this one!
Yep! This was an awesome shot to get - thanks for the nice comments! I've got to get some shots of the cardinals that have been visiting recently soon!
Thank you for saying so! It's very hard to catch them like this - it was a really lucky capture! They're vary radiant - I have a few other cardinal videos on YouTube (search for "taburineagle cardinal") too... So that would place you in... Illinois? Ohio? Virginia? I checked the Wikipedia list of state birds and there's quite a few that use the Cardinal (or some subspecies of it) :)
In my backyard, at a birdfeeder suspended from a clothesline pole. I just sat the camera up and waited - I was just lucky to get the cardinal to choose that time to eat!
Thanks - Oh yeah? Interesting... you can hear them all over the place, but it's kind of a rare thing to actually *see* one like this. I have another cardinal video in my collection - click on the little icon that says "taburineagl" right under the video on this page to see it. That one shows both a male and female cardinal - drastic color differences!
Usually, mourning doves tend to be very cautious. They kinda stick out their necks when they see something. When I try to film them, they see me through the window and fly off!
Hehe... did YouTube screw up or was that comment for another video? :) Mourning Doves don't really seem to mind when I move the camera around - Cardinals usually fly off pretty quickly though!
No, YouTube's system isn't that messed up! I was kinda replying to what pmboston said about how cardinals are very cautious. I replied to your comment though because you know what mourning doves I'm talking about. View all of the comments - it makes much more sense :)
wow that is a dark cardinal. the ones that live near my house are way brighter than that. XD he looks like a old grandpa.

cardinals are a type of sparrow, they seem fidgety.

This one doesn't look as scarlet as others I've seen. What does that mean? Does it get darker when it's older?
