the plaster is falling off. There is nothing special in it. I saw other mummified bodies in Thai monasteries. Instead of burning them, what is the tradition, they keep them for meditation purposes.
Saint Bernadette, Xavier and other Christain saints did not decompose. Paramahansa Yogananda did not decompose . He wrote the " Autobiography of a Yogi." Hindu , Christian and Bhuddhist saints sometimes do not decompose and stay some what incorruptible . surely they all tune into the same universal spirit and all share the same love and humility etc thanks very much for posting.
It is the "mental state" he has achieved. he is in "another realm". not bounded by physical limitations in this realm we are in. It's like when Tibetan senior monks near their passing away, they attain the “rainbow body" phenomenon, same thing.
There are a number of mummified monks in Japan that are similarly displayed. The monks in Japan actually mummified themselves. There is a new book on the subject called "Living Buddhas: The Self-Mummified Monks of Yamagata, Japan" (McFarland, 2010), by Ken Jeremiah. Check it out...it's interesting...
If you remember, could you please let me know where you saw the documentary...I am trying to get more information on them...thank you. I appreciate the help.
I dont remember for sure. It might have been on the History channel. I think the documentary was called "The Self-Mummified Monks of Japan" or something like that.
Buddha Gotama had contempt for the body. It was dukkha! It smelled, was unreliable, and even the "owner" could not stop itself from aging. Just a sac of bones, pus, blood, phlegm, etc. The body was only fed and cleaned in order to maintain it for the practice. Anyone who venerates a corpse has failed Buddhism 101 class.
The body is indeed unreliable and impermanent, but you should not view it with contempt. To see it as a sac of organs, is just an antidote to desire/attachment.
"Monks, it is good for a monk if, from time to time:
I think the undecomposed body is to remind patrons of impermanence i.e. birth, sickness, old age and death, rather than for patrons to venerate the boby. Unfortunately many people (people with dust in their eyes) had mistaken undecomposed body as something magical.
Ajahn Chah kept a set of skeleton in his Wat and it is to remind people of death, not of some black or white magic.
Hmm maybe you are being a bit too harsh there. It is true that LIVING the Dhamma fully is more important than venerating the dead remains of even an enlightened being, and I'm sure the Buddha would agree with that. But to say these people have 'failed' Buddhism is a bit overstated, and is a rather inflammatory statement for a Buddhist to make. And maybe keeping those slowly decaying remains actually HELPS those who honour them to reflect on impermanence...I mean, look at them!
People say bad things about people and even say bad things and being disrespect to monks will get there karma, becareful of yourself, your family and frineds... karma will get you so if you want to say bad things in the future because of your unpure and stupid mind please smack yourself in the face and shut up. silence is wonderful espically when you do not have anything good to say

I am sorry, but many of the Christian saints have decomposed and have wax coating put on their faces and hands to hide the decomposition. Granted, it is still pretty impressive that there is anything left of them at all after so many years. The implications of this is that when a person achieves a high state of holiness they have the ability to show signs that they have gained realization.
Mystic Christians would call it a sign they have been lifted to sainthood.
The implications are HUGE!!! If everyone could do this then we wouldn't have to bury people anymore, we could just stack people on top of each other. Imagine the land we could save with vertical body stacking!!
It doesn't mean anything. It is a "miracle" without a purpose. There is a reason the Buddha forbid his disciples to perform miracles - anything that takes our eyes off the 4 Noble Truths and the 8-fold path is a dangerous distraction that may prevent us from attaining enlightenment and liberation.
@BryanNav ; its a common myth that hair and nails continue to grow after death, but this is not true.
What happens is; our bodies are over 80% water. After we die, we naturally begin dehydrating, and since out skin's water gets evaporated, it begins to shrivel and shrink, and it only reveals the hair and nail growths that were already grown (while alive) and present underneath our skin.
Our hair/nails are much longer under our skin, only some of it is exposed, thats how it all stays in place!
Not nearly as impressive as the Christians saints who didn't decompose, this body is simply going slowly, but the Christian saints haven't decomposed at all, and they died earlier than this guy did.

This phenomenon also exists in Catholicism too. The term used there is "incorruptible" rather than "undecayed"

"Monks, it is good for a monk if, from time to time:
he sees the repulsive in the unrepulsive,
he sees the unrepulsive in the repulsive,

he sees the unrepulsive in both,
he avoids both views, and remains
calm, mindful and clearly comprehending.

BryanNav: I believe hair and nails still grow even after u die
No they don't thats a myth. The body shrivels up whitch makes them look longer. Research for yourself if you dont believe me.
bob16cl 2 years ago 2
@bob16cl but then how about in sum case their principle would cut their nails for them?
jishin99 1 year ago
@BryanNav this is true. everyone uses this as a fun fact. in reality, hair and nails will grow for 2-3 weeks after you die. not forever
bleacherbum18 1 year ago
@BryanNav
Wrong again, son :(
When ur body stopped functioning (deceased) keratin in ur
nails & hair also ceased.
tae1c 1 year ago
@BryanNav common misconception. It's the skin that's shrinking due to lack of water and decomposing making nails and hair appear to grow.
Shemassault 1 year ago
@BryanNav No, they don't. As the skin loses moisture, it shrinks back, making the hair and nails look as though they are growing.
buutich 1 year ago
@BryanNav the hair and nails dont acutally grow, the skin just shrinks, making hair and nails apear longer
