The Spitfire was the most beautiful fighter ever built. What a bizarre and striking sight to see it side-by-side with its mortal enemy. A talented pilot in a Spitfire during WWII was the ultimate weapon. Speed, agility, power...I would love to have been alive to see it in action. p.s. I'm an American
@yesanded - Good comment...For your ultimate weopon...google Ron (Ras) Berry...A WW2 Spit' fighter Ace who once trained US pilots for operation torch...A shy young office clerk who flew over 400 front line missionsand was never shot down...These guys had real balls
@mongorians22: I think this is an illusion. The frame rate for video is 30 frames per second. I don't know what speed the props turn at, but I think what we're seeing is a sort of strobe effect, making it look as though the props are turning slowly, when in fact they're spinning at high speed.
actually, Germany was waiting for Britain to Starve. And as for the P-51, daylight bombing of Germany had ceased. The long range fighter, saved the air war. Britain would have lost without the USA....and the USA would have lost without Britain, it was truly a world war.
@bunman44 Daylight bombing had ceased but night bombing had started, i wouldn't have said britain would have lost the war without the U.S, lets not forget it the commonweatlh was involved also, britain was holding it's own and also starting to take the fight to the germans before the US entered the war. I think what would have happened if the US had not come in is you would have had stalemate between the two sides.
By the way, I am not saying the US contribution isnt massively appreciated, the rest of the world just gets a little annoyed when they here for the 1000th time totally false statements like 'without the USA the war would have been lost' or 'Britain would have lost within a month without US help' Just get your facts straight and realise that Germany was first stopped before any real US contribution and that most of the US public wanted to leave Nazi Germany to do what she wanted.
@reddiethecat Thats wrong, Hitler tried to invade Britain in Summer 1940 before the US supplies even got going. No US planes were used in the Battle of Britain, even the Browning Machine guns were made in Britain. By the end of 1940, when the Germans could not gain air superiority, they knew they could never successfully invade Britain. I know your TV channels like to imply otherwise, but I'm afraid its just not true. Mustangs didnt get into service until mid-1943.
There are many more things to explore about this scenario. Anyway, what you have to know is that Nazi-Germany was not focused on destroying England or it's people. They were "pro" English in many points. If they would've wanted to do similar things like for example in Poland or Russia, the attack would have gone on with no remorse after Dunkerque and no troops could've make it back over the canal.
The main problem of the Luftwaffe was fuel capacity. They only had a very short operating time over Britain so they also could make it back.
They knocked on your door. Be happy that Hitler first wanted to get Russia as main target in 1940, cause in full blown war with no Russian front it would've been over. One or two British Islands off the French coast, that were occupied by Germany had their own protocol (etiquette, sorry for my English) for ground troops.
@reddiethecat Now I'm no math whiz but i dont think the U.S. moping up the Engleshmen's job accounts for the total fall of the German Luftwaffe. The average G.I. soldier could not take on the Average German soldier on a one to one basis. This is not my words but from the account of an American soldier who fought during the war. Without the assitance of the Russians and Brits, the war would of been lost for the U.S.
@reddiethecat Yes, supplying did help the war effort but it wasnt won just becuase of the U.S. supplies. At the height, only 12% of the U.S.S.R.'s airforce was foreign supplied, and that included commonwealth aircraft such as the Spitfire. Also 80% of the German forces were fighting on the Eastern front against the Soviets. That includes 80% of the Luftwaffe taking on the Soviet air force.
@reddiethecat Now im not saying the U.S. didnt contribute to the war effort. But without any of the 'Big Three' powers, neither would of succeeded. By the time the Mustang made its huge appearance over Europe, Luftwaffe had already taken a beating from the combine onslaught of Spitfires, Mosquitoes, Typhoons, Thunderbolts, Lightnings, Yaks, Laggs, Las, and Warhawks. Her job had been made easy for her.
@reddiethecat This included the radar. A new technology that allowed the British to detect and scramble aircraft to the right area long before the Germans arrived. Also while fighting over home territory any down British pilots (who lived) could be back in a fighter within the day. (It happened, so strong was the will to win). Any German pilots downed were either captured or had to make a run to neutral Ireland which usually still resulted in their capture.
@reddiethecat "Trust me, I know what happened in WWII" Ohhhh so you were there? (sarcasm alert). Lets get the facts straight. During the Battle of Britian the only aircraft supplied by the U.S. was the P-40 which was deemed unsuitable for high altitude combat and was used for low altitude reconnaissance. In no way could Britain of been taken over "within about a month". They had several advantages the Germans lacked or couldnt counter.
@reddiethecat never said they didnt have any turning points but they where mostly in the pacific, britain won the battle of britain which stopped the nazi's taking the world's biggest shipping lanes, and taking over one of the world's most important landmarks to progress through the world and the rest of the EU,the USSR had starlingad which they turned back on the germans fast! so when you learn more about the whole of ww2 and not just your own country please feel free to speak!

And yes the Germans lost, yes at the end of the war these planes had big losses but thats probably because the planes and pilots had been fighting for over 4 years. I think that there never was a turning point. Germans were heading toward a certaing defeat from the beginning due to lack of managements, leadership and vision from the very beginning. Luftwaffe lost some planes in england but also lost a quite a lot of planes in Poland and France. Training programs and plane production was staying in the peace time levels until 1941 or so. They should have trained X5 pilots and X5 planes from 1939 or so.
Germany didn't economically go on a wartime footing until after 1941.
The German people thought the war was going to be finished after the fall of France.
Yet another unknown mystery, why they geared the country for a short war yet pursued a long one. Sure as hell doesn't fit with histories idea of Hitler wanting to take over the world does it ?
@proudguy It couldn't gain air superiority over Britian because of a new invention called "radar." Without it Germany would have been more then capable of defeating the British.

Thanks, I looked it up in my book and you are correct about the Packard-built Merlin.
I was a bit confused at first because I think Packard Merlins in dash 1,3,7 and 9.
When I see "Merlin 266", I automatically think Rolls Royce or engines designated for transport/bombers.
Thanks

youre right, but the time on the front has also the point, that you CAN reach such high "scores"
some amis flew their 50-60 missions and moved home, never seen a german fighter to shoot down

also the last german pilots hadnt the same training like the allied ones

Single engined Fighter versus fighter, it was pretty close.
The Do-17, Ju-87 and Me-110 got mauled.
In actual numbers, the battle of attrition was still being won by the Germans. 3 to 1 odds at the beginning
It was when Adolf switched to bombing cities and left the airbases / radar alone that killed the deal for the Luftwaffe.
He had to pay them back for the embarrassment of the RAF successfully performing a nuisance bombing of Berlin.
Just the breather the RAF needed.
