All I know, is that this musical had the power to make me cry. If any musical can make one person, even one, then that musical is a success. Remember what theater is all about, its not about the money or the awards. It is about how it affects and helps the cast and the audience become better, maybe even to help them make changes in their life. That to me means it is a success and therefore this musical was a definite success.
Great song, and Toro does an amazing job with it--but it's probably a sign of why the show did so poorly that this is the only song I remember from it, and I saw it twice.
@tonywrestles2 did poorly? it went to Broadway and then PBS did a thing for it. so sure its not like some of the greats but it didn't do poorly. Also it doesn't help that in the Broadway version they ended up cutting 2 of the best songs. Resurrection Man, and then another... which I can't really remember it's name... but I sure as heck remember the song. It's a trio between the 2 man guys and Lucie
The Broadway production closed within 2 months. From an initial investment of $16 million, it made a grand total of $4,655,502, for a net loss of over $11 million. To the best of my knowledge, there have been no national or foreign tours. The show was completely ignored by the Tonys, and didn't win any of the few Drama Desk Awards for which it was nominated. By any objective standard, that's doing poorly.
@tonywrestles2 Just because it didn't win an award doesn't mean it didn't do well. And if you look at WHEN it hit Broadway you would realize that it was in 2008 right before the crash when it started. So the crash really screwed them over, however it has been doing well and it has been doing better and better as time goes on. But to say it's done poorly I feel is an overstatement. It's done alright not really well, but alright.
No, the fact that it didn't win any awards AND didn't recoup its investment means it didn't do well. It failed both artistically and commercially. Why is this such a hard concept to grasp?
I know exactly when ATOTC hit Broadway - September 2008. Billy Elliot opened two months later and is still running. ATOTC never hit more than half its potential gross in a week; Billy Elliot routinely does. It exists now as a cult piece and a vanity project; that's not doing "alright".
@tonywrestles2 over all they have done alight. When you look at the small picture of Broadway yeah it was a flop but in the long run they have done alright.
And by simply making it to Broadway it has helped cement as 'the' ATOTC over all the others that have been written.
@voiceofbooks Now, what's the difference between the two shows? Easy. Billy Elliot is an adaptation of a movie people have already seen, which is what's in vogue on B'way right now. ATOTC was a mega-musical produced 10 years after the era of mega-musicals had passed (remember The Pirate Queen?). Also, ATOTC had catastrophic problems that were endemic to the story itself (for example, the only real villain dies halfway through Act 1). There was just too much going against it, unfortunately.
@tonywrestles2 I guess then you failed to grasp the 'true' villain then. The true villain wasn't the Marque it's revenge and what it does to the revolution in France. The 'villain' is Madam Darfarg (or however you spell it) b/c she becomes twisted by hatred. The play fallowed the book pretty well seeing as how long the book is. And while they might not have made back what they put into for the Broadway they have made plenty in the long run. So while their run on Broadway we can say that was poor
@voiceofbooks Madame DeFarge isn't in the same class as the Marquis when it comes to true evil.
You'll notice I threw some hard numbers your way. If you can't do the same, kindly stop spewing vague generalities like, "they made plenty." If they don't make back their initial investment--$16 million--then they fail from a commercial standpoint. It's that simple. And keep in mind that number goes up every time they do a concert version or if they ever put together a tour.
@tonywrestles2 When talking to the writer and her family when they came by to see Prinipia put on the show one of the questions asked was "how well has it done" and yes, the trip to Broadway was an economic failure, but in the long run they have done alright. The reason I'm not throwing numbers at you is b/c when they explained that despite the Broadway run they have made back what they invested, but they didn't give us numbers. It has been the PBS show, and selling the rights that have
@tonywrestles2 that have gotten them to an 'alright' setting. But lets also keep in mind that 'my' idea of doing alright and 'your' idea are also prob different b/c it is a subjective thing. And i also think that we both have better things to do than argue w/ someone we dont know on the internet that we dont know over if the show did 'poorly' or just 'alright' when its so subjective. we can at least agree to disagree and to agree that "Out of SIght out of Mind" was one of two of the best songs^^
@voiceofbooks Whatever, kid. It sounds like their "doing alright" is like a Vegas addict's "even, maybe a little up"--sounds good, but doesn't have much to do reality. Numbers don't lie, and neither do awards--and ATOTC accomplished neither. Which is too bad, because it was at least ORIGINAL, which was refreshing after season after season of Disney, jukebox musicals, and cheesy movie adaptations.
@tonywrestles2 lol you can say that again about original. but they have at least have evened out what they put into it roughly which is more than can b said about a lot of shows and musicals. so yes id say alright is "even, maybe a little up" b/c so many shows fall on their face (like this show and Broadway- only most shows dont recover the way this show has ^^) oh and Happy Thanksgiving

Broadway is just having a difficult time with recognizing good things these days.
End of story.
