@tmspoofs Spartacus is Phantom 2008. It is also a drum and bugle corps, not a marching band. However, MOST drum corps shows are not as much relatable stories like Spartacus. Drum corps shows are more often art for art's sake with a theme. Marching bands have both types of show (it is never black and white).

@limegut Derp. You are correct the show is from 2008 for some reason I was thinking about their Rhapsody show. Drum corps are similar in styles as far as I have observed however they are at a whole different level of difficulty. So you were in SCV?
@tmspoofs I'm a bari rookie this year, and I'm loving it. I guess it's just a vibe that I've been feeling with show design in general. I think hs bands more than corps might be inclined to march shows that make actual stories because its easier to hook on emotionally for the kids.
But..... looking back at 2011 especially, DCI is really starting to embrace story telling much more than in the past. Way back when, DCI shows didn't even have titles!

It's tough to put on a good show when you don't have money to pay for instructors, choreographers, props, equipment, drill etc. You do the best you can with what you have.
OK, for the guy who posted this video i have a few things to point out. Every marching band program has to start somewhere. I have taught for numerous marching bands, both competition and half-time entertainment. There are some programs that are out there trying to begin with no support at all. I have instructed for a band this size for free, just to help them get started. Bands this size have no budget to buy anything they need. And having only 1 director doing the job, its very hard to do.
@DisturbedNFire I agree completely. The Marching Band I'm in used to be not so great about 8 years ago. Total of about 30 members. Now, We've gotten great enough to participate in 3 competitions each season, one exhibition. We won 1st place in AA class three years ago, my freshmen year. Now that I'm a senior in high school; I've been able to personally experience our growing reputation. We now have136 members, more each year, and are known around the state.

Maybe putting work into it is what this band needs. I can tell they're trying but if you want to look good you have to put your back into it. I say pick up your feet to where your thigh is flat and point your toes out. Yell louder, rock out (dance while playing) and they did good. Laying the mud is something you have to over come.

So the size definitely is not the reason they're not that musically inclined. I'm telling, their school probably doesnt have a lot of money so they only hire who they can afford, sucky directors. I started marching at 8th grade. Me and 1 other guy were the only 8th graders in a 9-12th grade band. It was fun, and I made a lot of mistakes. But I NEVER looked at the ground lol. Posture is important!!!

Wow. I recognize this stadium. This is also by far one of the worst competitions. Some great bands, but a really bad venue and it's out in the middle of nowhere, and the bathrooms we used were in the elementary school portion of the school, so they were like 3 inches off the ground. And my band, being 300+ didnt even get to compete because at the last minute they made an entire new division for us. But the band in this video, I'm pretty sure they will get or just got a new director.
I played in a brass quintet and we lost a tuba and a french horn due to instrument issues and we still sounded great, I took it down an octave to cover the tuba and the second trumpet took it down to cover my part, we sounded like we were just a brass trio and rehearsed for hours a day all week. We sounded better.
not every band has the same privelages and oppurtunities as others. that is a dick move when the band is still on the field. i did marching band too, and we got second at northwest competition, but you shouldn't troll the band while they're on the field. of course they're terrible, but who cares, kudos for them for getting out there and playing their shit

As an alumus of the Lee HS band, I find your comment in poor taste and ignorant. I was a part of the Lee band during the period that made it "famous." Now, I live near the very small HS that is in the video. This school is so small that they frequently march 6th graders, so give them a break. They work hard.
The competition they were in was experiencing rain and fierce winds all day. Flag, banners, and props were flying across the field all day!

Wow. I recognize this stadium. This is also by far one of the worst competitions. Some great bands, but a really bad venue and it's out in the middle of nowhere, and the bathrooms we used were in the elementary school portion of the school, so they were like 3 inches off the ground. And my band, being 300+ didnt even get to compete because at the last minute they made an entire new division for us. But the band in this video, I'm pretty sure they will get or just got a new director.

I played in a brass quintet and we lost a tuba and a french horn due to instrument issues and we still sounded great, I took it down an octave to cover the tuba and the second trumpet took it down to cover my part, we sounded like we were just a brass trio and rehearsed for hours a day all week. We sounded better.

not every band has the same privelages and oppurtunities as others. that is a dick move when the band is still on the field. i did marching band too, and we got second at northwest competition, but you shouldn't troll the band while they're on the field. of course they're terrible, but who cares, kudos for them for getting out there and playing their shit

We played this at our high school. I'm in 8th grade and we had the opportunity to play this with the high schoolers. I'm a middle school student, and we did better than them. They sucked. As an alumus of the Lee HS band, I find your comment in poor taste and ignorant. I was a part of the Lee band during the period that made it "famous." Now, I live near the very small HS that is in the video. This school is so small that they frequently march 6th graders, so give them a break. They work hard.
The competition they were in was experiencing rain and fierce winds all day. Flag, banners, and props were flying across the field all day!

Gotta say the best part was listening to the guy with the camera sound like a moron. This is a prime example of parents (or whatever relation you are) getting way too concerned with what youth are doing. They're in a marching band and obviously from a small music program. Just be happy that they are participating in this and not other stuff that will get them in trouble.
