@MomoTheBellyDancer "The answers to these questions change over time and vary between cultures, but the basis remains."
The answers change ergo, there's no definite answers. There is no basis that fits every situation, every time for everyone. It's wrong to steal, it's against the law, but since he/she would die otherwise, it's right (from the view of that person). These views differ from person to person and so does the value of, for example, the law.

@MomoTheBellyDancer In any case, my first statement still holds. Science doesn't concern itself with morality, since philosophy does it for it.

Yes, the mechanism to let people bypass or diminish their empathic ability is well-known. It's called "brainwashing", and it generally entails picturing the "other" as less than human.
@MomoTheBellyDancer I'm saying that there are facts and theories that average people don't need to know to get along with their average lives. If you go to the street and ask every person there "how long is your small intestine?" most of them wouldn't know, but they don't need to know it for it to work, yet some person sometime saw it fit to measure the average lenght of small intestine. Useless? Maybe, except for some doctors who most likely have some applications for such knowledge.

You're comparing philosophy to science. That's a completely false comparison. In science, we try to find objective measurements to know about the world around us. In philosophy, anything goes, as long as it sounds profound.
@MomoTheBellyDancer Exactly. Just like religion, but unlike religion, it does no harm.

@mika424 There was a point where philosophy and science (words) became quite synonyms in the past. But really, religion and philosophy are very different.
Awww, you're wasting your time on this stone-age throwback, Richard. Just leave him alone with his invisible jesus (who apparently created himself), his 6,000yo universe and his flying dead angel people. I can't think of a worse punishment for this jerk-off.
O'Reilly is such an ignorant fool! He's basically saying that religion should be taught in science class. Wrong, Bill! Science gets taught in science class. If I'm not mistaken US courts have ruled that it is unconstitutional to "present" religion as part of the science curriculum. Bravo Prof Dawkins for tolerating this asshole!
Christopher Hitchens would've kicked O'Reilly's ass. I love Dawkins, but his debating skills are not functional for the arena of Fox News' shortened-attention-span-protocol.
For a man that has determined nothing, that his way has created more gaps than answers, Dawkins sure is smug claiming science will eventually find the answers. This is the faith of the atheists. They usurp science for their own anti God purposes, expelling those who don't toe the atheist line; in the process, science is undermined for it because less about truth than about advancing an atheist, materialist philosophy.
"Dead-to-the-spirit deluded "God Delusion" author & blithering fool scientist goon Richard Dawkins another "leader" given to the profane masses is another useful idiot for Jesuit machinations"-C.O.
Jesuitical: pertaining to the Jesuits or their principals; designing; cunning; deceitful; prevaricating
The Jesuits completely altered the education system to suit their evolution agenda to discredit the Bible. They cant have a Satanic society of 'Do as Thou Wilt' if people still follow the Bible.
@Whyyousuchadumbbutt So you've rather pathetically registered the user name Whyyousuchadumbbutt just so you can get onto YouTube and tell people to shut up. Americans get the media they deserve. You have to leave it to Brits like Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens to do your fighting for you because you're too lazy to do it yourselves. You spend your whole time posting stupid comments on YouTube instead of getting off your butts to stop your country being taken over by religious fascists.
What if the god you are worshipping is the wrong god and you get sent to hell for worshipping the wrong god? If you were a god, what would you hate more? Someone not worshipping you? Or someone worshipping a fake god for stuff you did?
I'm gonna stay on the safe side and not worship or believe in any god until I see evidence.
@Marakulous43 Define "politically correct". It's a meaningless phrase to me. Are you saying that all 60 million of us in Britain are "politically correct" ? Have you met all of us ? What is the relevance of your comment to my question about the apparent poor quality of the American media ?
Does making a comment on You Tube actually change anything ? Isn't it just pissing in the wind ?
@Cogitatio023 that goes hand in hand with Dr. Neil Degrase said about how There not ever being a moment in which Science Teachers have been outside of churches Protesting and chanting "teach the controversy".
@splicedenergy I looked up Roger Ailes on Wikipedia and he looks pretty dodgy too.
As a Brit I'm interested in the question what media do you have in the USA which has anywhere near the impartiality of the British Broadcasting Corporation or Channel 4 news. Does such an organisation exist ? Your country seems to be sliding towards a kind of religious fascism.
It's hard to say. Personally I do not think there is one outlet because the government and CIA are embedded in our media the same way MI5 & MI6 are with yours (e.g. Operation Mockingbird & Operation Mass Appeal) But I can name some people in the media here who buck the system here and are very honest and speak the truth and they are Judge Napolitano, John Stossel, Jack Cafferty, and Dylan Ratigan but that's just about it.
@howler95uk "As a Brit I'm interested in the question what media do you have in the USA which has anywhere near the impartiality of the British Broadcasting Corporation or Channel 4 news."
Even if they don't, it's not at all clear that "impartiality" is appropriate. There's bound to be reporter bias no matter what, and it might actually be better that it's overt than more subtle approaches, including not mentioning issues. At least Dawkins got on his show and presented his view.
@howler95uk IMO, the main failures of US press are that they don't go into depth, are completely unable to hold civil debates and have an unhealthy ownership structure. Impartiality isn't really something I want to have served to me. I'd rather seek it out myself by checking out an opposing news outlet.
As a Brit I can't believe you allow ignorant arseholes like O'Reilly to contaminate your TV schedules. Fox News is part of the Murdoch empire which hopefully will be brought down by the Miller Dowler phone-hacking scandal in the UK.
Good riddance to it.
The BBC would never allow Dawkins to be questioned in such an ignorant bullying manner.
Fvcking douchebag, idiot, loudmouth moron. See, Bill, in science class we teach... Science!!!!! There will always be a gap in human knowledge and that gap is not an excuse to teach the idea that it was done by magic.
bill orilly thinks jesus had an idealistic society? yeah, it's called communism. maybe he believes in supply side jesus instead. there seems to be a lot of confusion about the two, see al franken's video on the subject.
I feel sorry for the USA when a person like bill o reilly's opinion is regarded highly enough to be on television, I am so happy I was born and live far far away from all these god bothering fools.
I whould also tell him that if creationism should be taught equally to evolutionism in schools, then all of the other faiths in the world should have their views on the creation taught equally to. The problem with that will be that the kids wont graduate until their 40 years old, but its the only fair thing to do if religion has to invade science classes.
I whould also tell him to help me pass a law to force churches to teach evolution equally in their sermons.
@Porkusido why? isn't that extremely cruel? How can you possibly FORCE a religious group to betray their beliefs when they are causing no harm in following them? fool
@selfexplanatorz Who's talking about forcing anyone anything? i just typed what i would have taken up for a discussion. Like the fact that Jesus preached what he calls socialism and hates, but he still says he follows him, which i find very disturbing.
I also find it weird that he wants HIS religious interpretation to be forced into science class, but i am pretty sure he doesn't want every religious view to be taught, aren't you?
@selfexplanatorz Last but not least. If he thinks creationists should be allowed to force themselves into science and force teachers to teach creationism in science class, shouldn't science get to force themselves into churches?
I don't want science in churches and i certainly don't want a fascistic religion hour in science class. What i typed was equal rights. IF he wants it as he says, then the equal rights means that it should be the other way round to, otherwise hes just a hypocrite.
I really wish i could have had a debate with O'reilly because i whould have asked him why he says he believes in Jesus christ and his message when he clearly doesnt follow it at all.
This i whould prove by telling him about all the times hes said hes against redistribution of wealth so the poor can have a shot at a dignified life.
Jesus was for universal healthcare, he wanted to rich to share their wealth and for the strong to help the weak in a society, O'reilly clearly wants the opposite.
@mideastatheist His Iq is actually quite high. He did go to Harvard and get excellent grades.
However he's still a stubborn asshole who is so set in his beliefs that he cant look at situations in ways that contradict his ideology.
Having said that, Dawkins did a pretty shitty job here, there were alot of things he could have said here that would have made Oreilly look quite stupid. (For example, Bill'O obviously has no idea what Fascism is) and better prove Atheism right or Christianity wrong
Has Bill ever heard of the seperation of church and state? A piublic classroom is funded by the state, and the christian theory is that of the church. They are seperate, it was ruled that way in court and the number of "alternatives" is infinite. Not to mention that in a science classroom science should be taught, not a theory that is getting by (as bill seems to have said) on pure numbers of people who believe it.
Everyone, don't get mad at this. It's your own fault for watching a video with Bill O'reilly iun it. From the title you can tell that the host of the clip (bill) should just be stuck in a hole somewhere with as many tons of feed as he has brain cells.
Dawkins is facist? Bill is a hypocrite. What about the part when bill says you have to put both sides of the argument in a science class? Thats not facism? Bill you fucking idiot go die please for us all
@STARBARTZZ Craig is a philosopher/apologist not a scientist. I saw some photos of giant skeletons but those were not real(I believe they were entries in a contest). You aren't referring to that are you? I think the ark has been "found" many times in recent history. None of this would be good at all in a science class room(especially Craig).
What Bill fails to show during that "key moment" is Richard totally destroying his "you guys don't know argument". Watch that clip, Richard makes him resort to changing the subject by making some stupid joke about Apollo. Fucking Pathetic. Fuck Bill O Reilly.
FUCKING O'REILLY.FFS I was getting annoyed when watching this, but when that piece of scum, gene pool polluting, nasty, biblebashing, etcetera etcetera. said
" you know what we Irish are like" I actually nearly proved his point by loosing my temper.
Bill, you are American, not Irish, does he understand how insulting that is to us Irish.
I suppose, if Dawkins was of African heritage, O Reilly would give him a spear.
I've never been so offended on so many levels before

It is embarrassing to watch such a deluded bastard like O'Reilly vomiting his typical stupidity and idiocy. It's such a nonsense ! This worm embarrasse the american people.
This O'Reilly guy doesn't seem to be the smartest man on the planet. He talks a lot and loudly. Still I can enjoy watching him sometimes. Besides his uncritical beliefs he isn't a too bad guy, is he? I'm not American, so I might miss some important info about him. If so, then please enlighten me :)
Let me say it again, Bill, you're an idiot!!! This is why America is going down, cause stupid religious people are following people like Bill and jesus. Wake up!!! You'd think by now would see that science is much more credible...
Science deals exclusively with verifiable reality. Suggesting that science should give credence to any half-baked ideas that people believe in without any realistic justification is asking science to go against its own purpose.
You want to study God? Take a class in theology, go to a bible school - no one is stopping you. In a science classroom all you should learn is science - rambling philosophical conjecture has no place there.
Where O'Reilly is making the mistake is in saying that the ID issue should be discussed in a Science class. This is not correct because philosophically speaking science is only concerned with empiricism. It's fine to discuss ID but that should preferably take place in a philosophy class. I know O'Reilly can come across as a dick sometimes but he's at least right that students are entitled to know about how these issues are commonly viewed.
Ironic. Fascists were Christians - blessed and backed by the Catholic and Protestant leaders in Germany and Italy....and killed as many Atheists in WW2 as they could get their hands on.
Oh what a fucked up world we live in when a Christian cries "Fascist" to an Atheist.
you people should be ashamed of having such video shows and hosts on your network when greater things of concern are taking place in the world around, Cant you people see all this is just a big cover to turn you peoples attention from the real deal. Shame on fox and all the big corporate media's
Bill just needs to listen. That's his problem. He's simply ignorant. Maybe if he listened rather than shouting down Richard Dawkins; who quite frankly is a man Bill should show a greater respect to, he just needs to realise just how much science has actually uncovered. Plus, I don't think he has grasped the fact that just because science can't explain something now, doesn't mean that it wont be able to explain it tomorrow, or next year or in 10 years time. Science is progressive! Realise that!
And also, the whole argument of "I cant explain how the universe came to exist, therefor God did it" is just plain stupid. It shows more about your lack of intelligence and imagination than it proves anything about the universe. Just because YOU cant explain something doesnt mean there isnt a rational explanation.
I wonder if O'Reilly would be ok with "presenting" in science classes that Zeus created the universe? How about Odin? How about all of the other 3000 gods that have ever been worshiped by man? But no, I havent ever heard him talk about those. How convenient that the only alternative he ever wants to bring to science class is the Christian God. And BTW no, Creationism or ID are not valid alternative theories to bring up in science class... since they are not science in the lesat.
As some one documented as both a Catholic and a Nutjob, I have to defend myself by saying this: Bill O'Riley, are you retarded? Religion is in what you feel, not what you see. And just because you haven't learned everything is no reason to reject all knowledge. You're not talking about Christianity, you're talking about fearmongering. And you give Religious Nutjobs, like me, a bad name.
Richard Dawkins is a gentleman and a scholar. He "out-graced" Bill "Douchbag" O'Reilly hand down.

As a Brit I'm interested in the question what media do you have in the USA which has anywhere near the impartiality of the British Broadcasting Corporation or Channel 4 news. Does such an organisation exist ? Your country seems to be sliding towards a kind of religious fascism.

@howler95uk

Gnomefro 5 months ago
@howler95uk IMO, the main failures of US press are that they don't go into depth, are completely unable to hold civil debates and have an unhealthy ownership structure. Impartiality isn't really something I want to have served to me. I'd rather seek it out myself by checking out an opposing news outlet.

Porkusido 7 months ago
@Porkusido why? isn't that extremely cruel? How can you possibly FORCE a religious group to betray their beliefs when they are causing no harm in following them? fool
selfexplanatorz 6 months ago
@selfexplanatorz Who's talking about forcing anyone anything? i just typed what i would have taken up for a discussion. Like the fact that Jesus preached what he calls socialism and hates, but he still says he follows him, which i find very disturbing.
I also find it weird that he wants HIS religious interpretation to be forced into science class, but i am pretty sure he doesn't want every religious view to be taught, aren't you?
Porkusido 6 months ago
@selfexplanatorz Last but not least. If he thinks creationists should be allowed to force themselves into science and force teachers to teach creationism in science class, shouldn't science get to force themselves into churches?
I don't want science in churches and i certainly don't want a fascistic religion hour in science class. What i typed was equal rights. IF he wants it as he says, then the equal rights means that it should be the other way round to, otherwise hes just a hypocrite.
Follow?
Porkusido 6 months ago
I really wish i could have had a debate with O'reilly because i whould have asked him why he says he believes in Jesus christ and his message when he clearly doesnt follow it at all.
This i whould prove by telling him about all the times hes said hes against redistribution of wealth so the poor can have a shot at a dignified life.
Jesus was for universal healthcare, he wanted to rich to share their wealth and for the strong to help the weak in a society, O'reilly clearly wants the opposite.

Science deals exclusively with verifiable reality. Suggesting that science should give credence to any half-baked ideas that people believe in without any realistic justification is asking science to go against its own purpose.
You want to study God? Take a class in theology, go to a bible school - no one is stopping you. In a science classroom all you should learn is science - rambling philosophical conjecture has no place there.
crowleyswhitehorse 9 months ago
Where O'Reilly is making the mistake is in saying that the ID issue should be discussed in a Science class. This is not correct because philosophically speaking science is only concerned with empiricism. It's fine to discuss ID but that should preferably take place in a philosophy class. I know O'Reilly can come across as a dick sometimes but he's at least right that students are entitled to know about how these issues are commonly viewed.

DeusExAstra 11 months ago
I wonder if O'Reilly would be ok with "presenting" in science classes that Zeus created the universe? How about Odin? How about all of the other 3000 gods that have ever been worshiped by man? But no, I havent ever heard him talk about those. How convenient that the only alternative he ever wants to bring to science class is the Christian God. And BTW no, Creationism or ID are not valid alternative theories to bring up in science class... since they are not science in the lesat.
DeusExAstra 11 months ago
As some one documented as both a Catholic and a Nutjob, I have to defend myself by saying this: Bill O'Riley, are you retarded? Religion is in what you feel, not what you see.
