On a front of the chuck you should have a silver colour nut - this is no 16mm. Use a spanner no 16mm (metric one) to unscrew the chuck without the hummer.
I have an 18 Volt XRP 1/2" Dewalt DCD970, there is no screw inside, same with the companion impact driver DC827. Both wobble the bits, any idea what to do?
What do you do if your drill does not spin straight? I have a fairly new Dewalt impact screw driver that has the high speed wobbles, I don't recall ever dropping it.
Looked it up and Bingo, how to remove a chuck. I was going to charge up my old drill but the battery is dead, is it worth while stripping it for its keyless chuck and motor etc. Regards Vin
I think if the chuck is broken so you can't use an allen key, you might try a pipe wrench. I haven't needed to do this, but it seems like it could work. Good luck!
Let's say you're replacing the chuck because it's BROKEN, and WILL NOT "chuck up" that large allen key. Now what?? (Yes, I've watched every video I can find -- they all say "chuck up the allen key...") Help!
@jbdzyne Have you checked out our video, "How to Remove a Stuck Drill Chuck"? It can be found on our channel page video list or on youtube by searching with that title. Get back us if you've already tried those methods or if they don't help your particular repair situation. Hope that helps for now. Thanks for watching!
@eReplacementParts Yes, every video says "chuck down on the allen key." My chuck is stuck wide open. Is there another way to get enough leverage on the drill chuck? I don't care if I destroy this chuck, since it's broken anyway. Thanks!
@Pooonschka The best way we know how to answer you is to refer you to another one of our videos, "How to Remove a Stuck Drill Chuck." You can search YouTube with that title to find it or view it on our channel page. Let us know how it goes and thanks for watching!
@29grampian A firm swing with good follow-through should do it in most cases. Beyond that, we recommend checking out another one of our videos, "How to Remove a Stuck Drill Chuck." Take a look and let us know if that helps. Depending on your results, we may have a suggestion or two from there. Thanks for watching!
It was an hour after I discovered about the screw! And then I tried turning it the wrong way. Saw your video and within 3 minutes I had the chuck off. Very practical and informative video. Thank you.
Thank you very much. I'm a bit of a biff when it comes to this sort of thing but this vid was just what I needed. Had to go back to it a second time though 'cos I was wacking the allen key in the wrong direction! Dough!
The jaws are held in the chuck by a series of grooves milled into the chuck body and some springs. You can usually remove the springs with a pick or even a screwdriver.
If one of the jaws is protruding more than the others it is a sign that something inside of the chuck has failed. It is possible to remove the springs and reset everything, although it is tedious at best. More than likely after the repair it will just happen again due to whatever part failed inside the chuck.
@grillo7422 If the chuck can't tighten, then the drill might have to go to repair shop. There are other more aggressive methods to remove a chuck, but they risk damaging the more expensive parts of the tool if they're not done just right.
Finally someone did this,I was looking for video like that. Thanks!
But I've got problem with my drill(Makita BHP451) the chuck fits so tight and I can't loose it:( torque is on high gear on LOW,drill only.I hit several times with hammer and nothing.I tried even with air key to unscrewing wheels:( What about motor rotation? Should be Forward or Reverse?
@TheMadM8 We've had so many comments on chuck removal problems that we will be posting another demonstration video soon, as soon as we have a good example come through the shop. This coming video will demonstrate some additional methods for removing sticky drill chucks. Check back in a couple weeks!
@eReplacementParts I've had a similar problem with my Metabo SBE 705, its corded. The keyless chuck has got sticky before now, to the point that it has been difficult to tighten or loosen the chuck to remove drill bits. I have a keyed chuck waiting to go in, but I just can't remove it from the drill. I was shown how to remove the chuck using a spanner and vice, but I can't remember how to do it. Any advice would be helpfull re direction, gearage etc.

Thanks for the reminder that the screw was left-handed. Once I had that sorted out everything went very smoothly.
By the way, I was shocked by that flagrant hammer abuse at 1:29 - hitting with the eye of the hammer indeed! SHOCKED I tell you! :-)

@jbdzyne - if it's not a plastic-cased chuck, you can always weld a bar to it...

The best solution is to simply replace the chuck.
Thanks for taking a look at our video!
