From my experience - They are better than not having them. I have run on black ice with them which is a little tough - but better than not having them. White ice is not a problem. I did have a problem in spring when the snow was melting and there were bare areas of tarmac - you could feel the screws wearing down quick.
Not is you use the shorter ones. Also, if you keep then on the outside of the sole there is not chance of them poking through.

Hex head sheet metal screws, the ones where the heads on them are VERY sharp, sharp enough to cut you, are simply not made anymore.

Ever hardware store i`ve been to makes the hex heads with rounded edges now. Simply of no use on ice.
