Remember reading the book on him, "The Golden Knight of Germany" as a kid...impressed the hell out of me. A hero regardless of the cause he fought for!
The ability to keep fighting against such odds is unbelievable. The Luftwaffe aces may have been fighting for the wrong cause but no one can deny their bravery, skill and tenacity.
"Bubi" Hartmann was the bravest of the braves! Not only was he the the most sucessful fighter pilot ever, but then even when in russian captivity, he fought for a better treatment of his comrades. Therefeore he even went on hungerstrike and was mistreated by the russians and released as one of the last german prisoners. Once a year I visit his grave and the lincense plate of my car reads xx JG 52, Jagdgeschwader 52, Bubis unit. I am proud of him.
Whoever suggested that Americans are unchivalrous because they use the word "kill" for a plane shot down is a wuss with an inferiority complex. Just FYI, American haters, Erich Hartmann liked Americans. In fact, a number of German warriors moved here after WWII. Hartmann didn't, but many did because Germans and Americans were so much alike. We both use deoderant and toilet paper, for instance, unlike other Euros.
@jjaugust5 PS: we are very different. It is also clearly visible on how you popped in here, uncivilized and swearing. We two are totally different, and iam proud of this. Your answer will do that credit again.
And I did not say that americans are unchivalrious because they use the word kill.......... you should possibly think a bit more before you stick your "full of propaganda" nose into topics you dont understand.
@jjaugust5 Toilet paper is not an American invention but a Chinese one. During the later Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) a Muslim traveler to China in the year 851 AD remarked:
"They (the Chinese) are not careful about cleanliness, and they do not wash themselves with water when they have done their necessities; but they only wipe themselves with paper."[2]
So, are you Americans as clean as that? Stupid question of course, but no more stupid than what you said about Europeans.
This is not American propaganda. This translation isn't incorrect, either. Hartmann DID say this in a different portion of the interview, just not the one in the video above. You can find a transcript of this vid online somewhere. I've seen it.
As for use of the word "kill" instead of "air victory," you fools out there need to learn a little more about English usage. The word "kill" can mean more than simply the act of killing another human or living thing.
United States of Idiots! Maybe from 1915 until 1950 your country had kind of a visionary idea of humanity. But this was long ago. The american level of education and knowledge is so embarrasingly low, it is unbelievable. Your country has become a nation of dull, gulping and farting idiots. Go studying the history of Disneyland! Ignorance and stupidity are crimes against humanity, too!
The Translation does not match to what Hartmann is telling. But it is true, what the man says about the bombers. At the end of the war The "jagdgeschwander 52" had to move lot of times. In Romania Hartmann also had to fight against Americans. He was fighting alone vs. 8 Americans. They hunted him. He tried to get back to his airport but had not enough fuel. So he decided to get out of the plain to save his life. The Mustang pilots did not murder him in the parachute.
@ZLIgari Hi,I am an admirer of Erich Hartmannn, and I read about Hartmann to have 7 P-51 luftsieg in Romania, but in victory list I saw just 1 P-51(kacha`s luftwaffe page). The others are unconfirmed?
Hi! Well, there is information on internet about 40 more victories, and that would be 392...as you see, only confirmed informations are counting, but its not hard to believe that he had almost 400 air victories. I found information on some website (cant remember the name) about those 5 P51s.
@rimoz The P-51 pilots didn't shoot at him in his parachute, because that is a violation of the Geneva Convention- on rules of war/ engagement in aerial conflict. They're (all nations) were forbidden to do that, but a parachuting member of an infantry or marine unit, is fair game, because they are all individually armed, and are part of an assulting force. A pilot's side arm doesn not put him in that catagory.
@jonesy97 George Beurling the Canadian ace was well known for "shooting up" parachutes. It is said that as many as 20 German pilots were killed by him this way. Many fellow pilots refused to fly with him. He was treated as a hero after the war He should have been hung for murder.
@barbenH Well said. Beurling was a swine aroused at killing - sociopath. As a Canadian, I'm not sure what I'm more disgusted with; that this pervert actually wore a Canadian uniform, or the throngs of hypocrites who 'conveniently overlook' what he was & did because he was "one of ours" (who, I'm sure blow a gasket & cry 'war crime' every time they hear stories of how it was done to 'their' troops) . The victors truly do write the history books, don't they...
@BOTiTTE Well, it was a joke, originaly from The Simpsons. Since its quite a serious topic, I did not put a smiley in there. My apologies if you got offended
@vonFisch ok , i just thought .. i mean when ppl speak about angels this is allready weird for me but shooting down agels in HEAVEN .. thats over the top ^^

I met Hartmann in Germany back in 1989 in Weil near Stuttgart. I spent about 3 hours with him. In the former times (as he called them) he was a warrior. But given his experience with the real Russian people and Americans, he became somewhat of a pacifist. He also regularly attended church. He was still grieving the loss of his daughter's husband in a motor cycle accident. His wife was quite ill at the time also. Superb pilot, fought for his country, and cared for his fellow captives.
@Scharfschutzen1 What about Hans Ulrich Rudel? He was the greatest warrior of all time. Can't go wrong with 519 tanks and hundreds of other land targets as a victim count.
So jetzt kommst du?????????

Big thanks to the usual quality of american media. ...
@therealbamlee oh really? So when a pilot got shot down for instance 8 times in his time of service, he got killed 8 times? are you serious?
Its not the same. Air victory is the word to go when you are no monster. You do not need to kill the man, even though it has a high chance of happening.
I said its not understandable for some modern people.
Hello, but sorry my english is bad...here i have someone from Hartmann(Erich Albert) pls read it and you have more information about Bubi.... take look at wikipedia...give Erich Hartmann to google and you find it
@000000AEA000000 ...Lt. Robert J. Goebel of the 308th Squadron, 31st Fighter Group, broke away and headed straight for him.[26] Goebel was making a camera pass to record the bailout and banked away from him only at the last moment, waving at Hartmann as he went by...thats American Chivalric
@44a335g5632fIF I said MODERN american. And Goebel is a german name. So he was an american of german background, who did maybe not believe fully in the brainwashing anti-german indoctrination American soldiers went through. 1 out of 3 american soldiers was a german-descendant, yet they were indoctrinated that germans are evil, soulless, order-following killing machines that do not deserve merci. Just like they thought the japanese were subhuman animals. thats still present in modern medias.
apart from that I was aming for the system. It is not hard to judge language. A pilot, that names a win over an enemy with the name "Kill" is clear about his intent. He is in for the ultimate... as I said... no merci shown. It is not "air victory". It is kill. You can not kill a machine, it is really simple. Few has changed, yet something did. You only need to watch modern american soldiers talk about them killing muslims. No respect, nor chivalry. America has no certain culture.
Look up the word "kill" in the dictionary. Maybe you should LEARN English before you COMMENT in English about what "americans do not seem to understand."
@jjaugust5 Killing, to cause the death of an organism, or the act of doing so. * The verb form may also be a general-use metaphor, synonymous with "to terminate" or "to finish"
Lol, that is quite disgraceful, imposing some made up story over the interview.
