He mentions this movie in his book. He went to view this movie in a Lebaon and he explains how the Lebanese audience reacted to it. You should read it. Look for it in your local library. It gives you an insight into what "real middle easterners" think of this movie and the view that the West has of them. it will astound you.
This was a good movie. But was far from Historically accurate. Especially on the European side. You could tell the time period that this movie & script was made in by more than just the special effects. I mean this was a political message against Fundamentalist Christianity. Or any form of Christianity before this Century. And it was so Historically inaccurate it's mind boggling.
I mean the Popes, the Bishops & the Templars were portraid as the personification of Evil. And those that didn't believe & questioned Catholicism in the movie were considered sensable & of good character. @srebrenika I cant speak for the Popes and Bishops but as for the Templars, historical documentation actually shows that they were extremely tolerant of other faiths and even allowed Muslims to enter the Dome of the Rock to worship and protected them while other knights wanted to kill them. Yet those are the eyes through which the Director wants you to see the time period. And the Arabs, Turks, & Kurds ect. Did not always act as respectable as they were portrayed in this movie either. It's like they took the worst of the Christians in that time period & the best of the Muslims when they made this film.
The movie was so lopsided it's rediculous. But again still wasn't that bad for a movie. The bad part is they were representing historical events & did so very poorly! If they said this movie is 70% fiction in the begining of the movie then that would have been much better lol.

The Popes at that time purposely forbade the printing of the Bible in common languages so that common people would be unable to read it and the aristocracy could tell them whatever they wanted about the Bible. Which is why the invention of the printing press helped jump start the Reformation.

If you study the crusades than ull see BOTH sides commited mass attrocities and both had men who were fair and just (ex. Saladin and Duke of Godfrey who actually led the first crusade).

There is a war correspondent who lived in Lebanon for 30 years and he wrote a book called Age of the Warrior just recently - I think it was written in 2006 or 2008. He mentions this movie in his book. He went to view this movie in a Lebaon and he explains how the Lebanese audience reacted to it. You should read it. Look for it in your local library. It gives you an insight into what "real middle easterners" think of this movie and the view that the West has of them. it will astound you.

This was a good movie. But was far from Historically accurate. Especially on the European side. You could tell the time period that this movie & script was made in by more than just the special effects. I mean this was a political message against Fundamentalist Christianity. Or any form of Christianity before this Century. And it was so Historically inaccurate it's mind boggling.

@srebrenika I cant speak for the Popes and Bishops but as for the Templars, historical documentation actually shows that they were extremely tolerant of other faiths and even allowed Muslims to enter the Dome of the Rock to worship and protected them while other knights wanted to kill them. This is part of what got them in trouble with the Pope later on (that and power politics).

Religion is mostly spreading among the poor and desperate, which is of course completly understandable. If your life is fucked up, you have no other possibility than to look up to heaven and pray. But this also show to which people religions mainly adresses to.

You will find violence in most religions, and islam has it's fair share of it, but you are right about Salah ad-Din having mercy on his defeated enemies. That makes Salah ad-Din an honourable person.
However, there are good people calling themselves muslims and there are bad people calling themselves muslims. Being a good or bad person has nothing to do with your religion. The religion must be viewed separately from the person.

I agree with you 100 %, but what can you say when people use religion to justify their actions and as a result the entire Muslim body is known through the world as a violent religion. Did you know that Islam tells us that at times of war, if the enemy seeks asylum then he should not only be given it, but also be escorted to a safe location exactly what Salah aldin did.
