Hey just curious, is the L.A. Crossfit? The chick on the right looks soooo familiar from the video I'm looking for. There was a video I found on a "Sexy fit women" website and it had 4 women doing a crossfit workout consisting of a run, kettlebell, and then kip pull-ups. Now, I can't find it. :(

when you do an exercise usually the focus is to provide intensity on one muscle group, doing kipping pull ups just means that you use momentum to get yourself up to the top of the bar creating less intensity in the muscle group basically meaning they are significantly less useful.
@fraserbricknell wide arm pullups are nothing to be proud of *shrug*--they're VERY bad for shoulders and aren't useful in real life situations, where you will have a choice of narrower grip
@nhianho I have no explanation why Crossfit promotes these useless kipping pullups versus real ones. It just reflects very bad on reputation of Crossfit and makes it a laughing stock.
I agree that the video could clear "kipping" to stop people viewing what they don't want - however, these are still very strong women; in complete contrast physically.
For all you strict movement weightlifters or strict pull-up guys or galls...strict or isolated movements don't help you out in any real life activity. Any fit crossfitter can do strict movements just as well as you can but I dare you to try a crossfit WOD (and bring a bucket for Mr. Pukie).
@tgumba ive done both. yet i never neglect the form of an excercise. I'm pretty sure that's one of the fundamentals of crossfit. Not improvising the form to get more reps. For example when I do cleans, I could use my arms but I make sure I'm not getting an upper body workout with cleans.

@zaniellify I'm curious what your medical background is. Where do you get the idea that puking causes kidney damage? I could see it causing Kidney failure if it's continous vomiting. Then you'd have dehydration & electrolyte imbalances but that's constant vomiting. Now if you had a valid argument like rhabdomyolysis I'd consider your comment credible. Any athlete will tell you that they've push hard, to the point of feeling nauseated. You live and you learn to pace better next time.

I would like to see any of you haters pull off that many pull ups. Kipping or hanging. No crossfit is not the cure all workout, but it does kick the crap out of you and makes you stronger for other areas of fitness or weightlifting
Not really sure how "strong" they are, per the title of the vid, since they're not showing any pure strength with the body flopping. They ARE in good shape, better than most, but not strong based on this video.
I did crossfit for 7 months and I tried out a few crossfit gyms in the past one month. Decided to stick to my MMA training, much better conditioning
These girls are very fit, no doubt about it. It's just that I hope some CF people are a bit more humble as there are a lot of MMA fighters who are much fitter or some regular joes who bust their butt in the gym day in and day out. Those methods are not any less (if not more) than CF. CF is a great program but it's not a holy grail of fitness.
@alexandrespz they r not even doing the pull up right using the mid to upper back and some other muscles that im not sure of, all they r doing is using the motion of there body to fling them up there, that just show that they dont have the muscles to pull them up there
@alexandrespz My daughter does 10 well formed pull ups without kicking her legs and she weighs 150 on a 5'3" frame. She would swat these bugs in an instant.
Way more impressed with the blond chick. She probably outweighs the little one by at least 30 or more pounds and has a WAY bigger ROM. Weighing 90 pounds at 4'10 and doing kipping isn't all that crazy impressive IMO, although still much better than most girls.

You are exactly what is wrong with much of the crossfit community. I'm not a bodybuilder personally, but it still takes quite a lot of hard work a dedication. Lumping anyone who cares about lat development with the typical health club member who goes maybe twice a week to do bench and biceps is ignorant. You should try to respect all serious approaches to weightlifting.
i am not an elitist. i am simply tired of the constant berating of crossfit from people who have little-to-no functional strength or genuine knowledge. it infuriates me when i hear, for example, a 220 lb man with a 250 deadlift, make a comment about kipping pull-ups being "cheating." culture is polluted by form over function, which stems from the bodybuilding mentality. remember that extreme viewpoints are necessary in order to spawn social change.

I call these "epileptic pull-ups". They look horrible and could be done by a fat chick . They're not in the least bit impressive and look plain stupid. I was recently giving a girl in my gym a hard time about doing these, I asked her what the point was and she said the "ooh it's cross fit, it's more for CONDITIONING". Haha, yea ok.
Basically, these are for people who can't do real pull-ups. Bang out 25 real pull ups in 30-45 seconds and then come tell me that's not conditioning. Garbage.
I used to love crossfit until I could no longer handle their egos. Bad form is bad form no excuses. one of the oldest rules of weight training is never sacrifice form for reps.
Actually it's called a kipping pull up rather than a strict pull up. It's used primarily for metabolic conditioning because crossfit people tend to have an obsession with maximizing what they call power output. They rationalize poor form by bastardizing physics concepts like work. I'm not saying it's easy, it just reminds me of the old syllogism that argues Socrates is a cat, if you know what I mean. What makes the pull ups questionable is the way the chin barely grazes the bar sometimes.
Those kind of pull ups take the entire upper body section and turns it to just cardio. Those pull ups are using hips, and legs, only about 25-35% arms, face it, its not impressive and they're not strong.
Good form / bad form - whatever. I've never tried this type of pull up, but I'm confident that either style is hard and I'm going to doubt I could pull the numbers these two women did (I will try tomorrow). Props to them both.
Your right...they wouldn't count in a testing situation. Thats because they have to assess everyone in the same way to make it fair and consistent. But the Marine 'Heaves' would be similar to these...and they use those in training.

True, but they are Kipping-Pull-ups not dead hang-pull-ups; dead-hang are a good measure of upper-body strength. Kipping-Pull-ups are a part of achieving overall fitness; I find Kips horrifically unimpressive (looking).

No, they're form is fine, the "proper pull up" you described is a dead hang pull up, these are kipping pull ups, a different variation of the pull up, the reason people do these is because they are a more athletic and functional movement, u said it should be all in the arms, can you ever name a situation in everyday life mainly athletics where you use just your arms, no so they use all of their muscles to get up, just like you would in sports for example a football tackle

They should do a comparison video: (1) One showing with the kipping, which can be hard in its way, and (2) the second performed from a dead hang with her chin going completely over the bar, and (3) the third style where the person brings the body underneath such that the bar touches the back of the neck. The third way is the hardest by far!
I'll bet the little one could do quite a few from dead hang, but not nearly the amount she did with kipping.
Pretty sure the girl on the right could do more dead-hangs than you (I think she is around 20). So I guess gymnasts that use kipping motions have no strength/endurance? You are an idiot if you think someone who can do over 10 kipping unbroken can't do any dead-hang.
Really? They aren't pullups? The kipping pullup is the standard for crossfit. And who does crossfit? BUDS, sniper scout school, marines, army, swat, cops, firefighters. I recently heard an interview with a sniper scout school instructor on how since they've included crossfit in their training they've had far less injuries and far better test scores. So all you haters have fun with your non-functional strict pullups.
Lat pulldowns help with pullups about as much as bicep curls, which is to say not much. Kipping is a skill that takes practice. Pullups in general recruit more muscles, and differently, when doing pullups as opposed to lat pulldowns, so just do the pullups. If you can't do a pullup yet you can do jumping pullups and negatives (jump up to top and lower yourself slowly) until you build up the strength.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with kipping if you can't do dead hang but fuck people, it's possible for there to be a flaw in your perfect fucking system.
This crossfit stuff looks like a great workout. I don't understand how you can do all that stuff(olympic lifts, squats, etc..) so fast while maintaining good form and not getting injured though. Heavy lifts weren't really meant to be done for time were they? If they are, I'd definitely like to get good at it though.
You generally don't do heavy weight for high reps for time. When going for time the weight is usually a fraction of your 1RM. Injury through compromised form due to fatigue is not much of an issue when the weight is light for you.
Ryan, you make good points, but don't say that strict pullups non-functional. I don't know of a better exercise out there to work on overall upper body strength, size, and functionality than the pull up.
Anton is correct. Marine Corps PFT does not allow for kipping style pull ups, or at least insofar as the drill instructors or sergeant instructors (at OCS) are abiding by Marine Corps standards. It's twenty dead-hang pull-ups for the full 100 points, no swinging, no kipping.
Great job ladies! I finally got my girlfriend crossfitting with me about 7 months ago, and after struggling for so long shes up to about 3 pull-ups max. Any tips for helping her get more? should she just keep grinding away doing jumping?

Those arent' pullups. Those are kick ups, which are MASSIVELY easier than a real pullup. Sorry, it's cool that you can get your chin up over the bar, but don't call these pullups.

I got a link to some amazing strong women videos of them doing chin ups and pull ups. My sister stars in it and is the strongest girl around. If anyone wants a link, hollar at me. I got it.
Her back is stronger than every friend I know even from high school. And even though her abs are stronger too than most friends she still won't use her abs to do chin ups.
My sis legs her legs hang. She gets better and better just by do more bio-mechanicists, kinesiologists, ie pull and chin ups. And even more so, the physics principle of weight times distance over time.

You are exactly what is wrong with much of the crossfit community. I'm not a bodybuilder personally, but it still takes quite a lot of hard work a dedication. Lumping anyone who cares about lat development with the typical health club member who goes maybe twice a week to do bench and biceps is ignorant. You should try to respect all serious approaches to weightlifting.

i am not an elitist. i am simply tired of the constant berating of crossfit from people who have little-to-no functional strength or genuine knowledge. it infuriates me when i hear, for example, a 220 lb man with a 250 deadlift, make a comment about kipping pull-ups being "cheating." culture is polluted by form over function, which stems from the bodybuilding mentality. remember that extreme viewpoints are necessary in order to spawn social change.

I can say whatever the fuck I want, but in this case, the Pull Up never involved seizuring on a bar swinging your legs looking like a dying fish.
The Pull Ups are one of the best exercises for pulling strength and one of best exercises for strength in general.
Kipping is lame. There is no excuse for cheating, whether it's for "metabolic conditioning" is irrelevant.
Cheating and using poor form results in injury. Maybe when you fuck up your shoulders or worse. You'll realize how dumb this is

I was linked this video from the strength and conditioning section of a forum I frequent.
I'm not claiming to be a genius, but doing traditional strict pull-ups, IMO are more beneficial that kipping.
Not just for building mass but pulling strength.
The ability to handle your own weight is important for anybody, not just athletes.
Using momentum to get up there isn't doing anything.

I call these "epileptic pull-ups". They look horrible and could be done by a fat chick . They're not in the least bit impressive and look plain stupid. I was recently giving a girl in my gym a hard time about doing these, I asked her what the point was and she said the "ooh it's cross fit, it's more for CONDITIONING". Haha, yea ok.
Basically, these are for people who can't do real pull-ups. Bang out 25 real pull ups in 30-45 seconds and then come tell me that's not conditioning. Garbage.

Actually it's called a kipping pull up rather than a strict pull up. It's used primarily for metabolic conditioning because crossfit people tend to have an obsession with maximizing what they call power output. They rationalize poor form by bastardizing physics concepts like work. I'm not saying it's easy, it just reminds me of the old syllogism that argues Socrates is a cat, if you know what I mean. What makes the pull ups questionable is the way the chin barely grazes the bar sometimes.

Those kind of pull ups take the entire upper body section and turns it to just cardio. Those pull ups are using hips, and legs, only about 25-35% arms, face it, its not impressive and they're not strong.

True, but they are Kipping-Pull-ups not dead hang-pull-ups; dead-hang are a good measure of upper-body strength. Kipping-Pull-ups are a part of achieving overall fitness; I find Kips horrifically unimpressive (looking).

No, they're form is fine, the "proper pull up" you described is a dead hang pull up, these are kipping pull ups, a different variation of the pull up, the reason people do these is because they are a more athletic and functional movement, u said it should be all in the arms, can you ever name a situation in everyday life mainly athletics where you use just your arms, no so they use all of their muscles to get up, just like you would in sports for example a football tackle

They should do a comparison video: (1) One showing with the kipping, which can be hard in its way, and (2) the second performed from a dead hang with her chin going completely over the bar, and (3) the third style where the person brings the body underneath such that the bar touches the back of the neck. The third way is the hardest by far!
I'll bet the little one could do quite a few from dead hang, but not nearly the amount she did with kipping.

Really? They aren't pullups? The kipping pullup is the standard for crossfit. And who does crossfit? BUDS, sniper scout school, marines, army, swat, cops, firefighters. I recently heard an interview with a sniper scout school instructor on how since they've included crossfit in their training they've had far less injuries and far better test scores. So all you haters have fun with your non-functional strict pullups.

Lat pulldowns help with pullups about as much as bicep curls, which is to say not much. Kipping is a skill that takes practice. Pullups in general recruit more muscles, and differently, when doing pullups as opposed to lat pulldowns, so just do the pullups. If you can't do a pullup yet you can do jumping pullups and negatives (jump up to top and lower yourself slowly) until you build up the strength.

This crossfit stuff looks like a great workout. I don't understand how you can do all that stuff(olympic lifts, squats, etc..) so fast while maintaining good form and not getting injured though. Heavy lifts weren't really meant to be done for time were they? If they are, I'd definitely like to get good at it though.

You generally don't do heavy weight for high reps for time. When going for time the weight is usually a fraction of your 1RM. Injury through compromised form due to fatigue is not much of an issue when the weight is light for you.

In fact, every pullup you kip in your PFT does not count.
Not to say some members of the military DON'T use crossfit...I'm sure some do. But kipping is a no-no

Anton is correct. Marine Corps PFT does not allow for kipping style pull ups, or at least insofar as the drill instructors or sergeant instructors (at OCS) are abiding by Marine Corps standards. It's twenty dead-hang pull-ups for the full 100 points, no swinging, no kipping.

Those arent' pullups. Those are kick ups, which are MASSIVELY easier than a real pullup. Sorry, it's cool that you can get your chin up over the bar, but don't call these pullups.

My sis legs her legs hang. She gets better and better just by do more bio-mechanicists, kinesiologists, ie pull and chin ups. And even more so, the physics principle of weight times distance over time.
