i just shot a xd9 and a xd45 and honestly from 9 to 45 it wasnt a big jump in recoil in my opinion and im not super storng either just an average male here...recoil is not bad at all..also it was my first time shooting ever
Hi Hickok, For self defense, how do you compare 26 vs. 27 for knock down? Are they really close? Also how do you compare the same for the Glock 29 vs. 30?
I think that most experiences shooter will agree that the recoil of all these common rounds are nearly negligible once you've practice shooting your gun and have put hundreds of rounds down range. Practice makes perfect. Don't fear recoil, find a gun that fits your hand like a glove and that you can consistently carry. Another great video Hickok!
Good idea using the target as a background reference. There didn't appear to be much of a difference. But I know from experience that the 27 does kick more and make follow up shots a "little" slower. I think that we automatically hold firmer once that .40 starts to buck. That may be why there didn't appear to be too much of a difference.
But it was a cool video to watch. It's awesome that you come up with these types of tests for the viewers. Thanks for posting.
@bsmoove1usable the Glock 29 did/should have the most recoil. This is Glock's 10mm, which is listed as their most powerful handgun caliber. In terms of energy release the most powerful goes in the order of 9mm < 40 S&W < 45 ACP < 10 MM. Of course, ammo varies quite a bit.
I normally use UMC 180g FMJ practice rounds and Hornady 165g FTX rounds and the FTX 165g has more recoil and is a bit louder over all. I thought the higher the grain the louder and more recoil? Seems to me like it's the other way around. Og course as expensive as the FTX's are, I only fire a couple after every 250 count box of UMC's I fire just to make sure I'm keeping myself in check with them sence they do in fact shoot alot differently.
The 40 and the 10mm seem to push your hand back a bit more than the 9mm. As expected the 10mm seem to push back the most. Thanks for posting. I found it quite interesting.
Nice video. I have a G27 and a G22 and with 165gr target load I find it kicks a little more than the G17 I borrowed for comparison, but it's quite manageable. Strangely, I seem to get in the "groove" quicker with the G27 down at the range than with the full size G22, not sure why. Also did some checking and nobody offers JHPs for your hi-capacity assault stapler :-(
@bart4111 Dude...do you not realize that Hickok45 is a champion shooter & has been shooting for decades?? He's probably been shooting in competitions before you were born. Please inform yourself before you make uninformed, ignorant statements on a professional. Thank you.

How would you compare the G26 against the recoil of the G27 in your own opinion? I'm looking to buy a 27 but am worried that recoil may be too snappy with the very short barrel.
@Mizzsekcnsweet I personally found the 27 to be really jumpy compared to the 26. The first time I shot the 27, it jumped and bit the back of my thumb. The 26 is pretty manageable though. Also, I found the best grip with the 26 to be with the left hand wrapped around the front of the trigger guard.
hey mr hickok im buying a glock 20 but im not sure though if should get the c model .have you ever shot the glock 20 c , if so whats your opinnion?is there a big diff in recoil with the compensated vs. non-compensated version.it will be my primary carry handgun.is the upward blast from the compensated version a problem for night time defense?i would think so but...
@mossbones1 Authorities generally don't recommend compensated handguns for carry. Muzzle blast can hamper your night vision, among other problems. Tritium night sights are recommended.
im getin my first glock here soon. Im getin a Glock 23. this really doese help, im used to firing the 9mm. But this demonstration really helps, Thanks for the video Sir.
I hope one day someone can create a pneumatic simulator that resembles a discharge of any caliber it can be calibrated to. Pop 120psi in the compressor and you can practice taming guns of any recoil indoors and out without ear muffs. Lock your favorite grip on the holder and jolt yourself all day long...
I really like this video man. I am currently deciding if I want the g26 or g27. The only "human" factor I can see coming into play for you is that you are already comfortable shooting these guns and know how bad the recoil is on each so you compensate for that. The muzzle rise was so similar for each gun because of that I think. GREAT VID!!!
thanks that was a good practicle demo of recoil. Sort of like shooring water jugs or phone books for penetration. The last gun the 10mm? seemed to have more rear momentum than upwards
Great video. I didn't notice much difference in the 'rise' but in rapid-fire the Glock 29 showed some real 'snap'. I was sort of disappointed when I got the Glock 20 how little recoil it had I guess I was hoping it would have .357 Mag power but I havn't shot any factory ammo yet only handloads. It's possible my (Hodgdon) data might be super-conservative I don't know... It reminded me of a .40 S&W to be honest.
i have a glock .45 and they told me that if i was to dry fire it like you do at the end of each fireing that i am able to damage the gun or make the firing pin fall out of place.
@0102josh i didn't knw that it didn't they had told me that it will damage the gun plus i never dried fired any ofmy guns i just make shure that it is empty
hickok45 is exactly right as always. I have personally dry-fired my glocks tens of thousands of time and they still run 100% in competitions. The only modern firearms that will be damaged by dry-fire are rimfire weapons - mainly your .22LR.
can dry shooting, like I seen you do at the end damage the glock? I had a Taurus PT 111 Pro 9mm, and I was told not to dry fire for reason that it can damage a gun. Just wonder if that goes for the Glock?
@Senicova you must dry fire the Glock pistols in order to take the slide off them.... whoever told you that was wrong. Each and every time you break the gun down for cleaning you must dry fire it. Obviously this is an intended function and not damaging. I can't speak for every pistol type on the planet, but it does not damage Glocks. I have owned Glock 23, 26, and 38 and never had an issue.
40.cal recoil is way too exaggerated. I shoot the G23 and it feels just fine, I don't notice a difference between the G23 and G19. G23 is a great gun all around.
@hickok45 Is there any way to conceal carry that stapler? which brand of holster do you recomment? CCW a stapler might be tough, do you known any polymer framed stapler? Any good self defence staple loads out there?
I shot a Glock 23 .40 today the Recoil wasn't bad. It was the first pistol I ever shot. Well I shot a .22 pistol but thats nothing. It was so much fun
i think the 29 has the better recoil for a bigger bullet, it also helps maybe cause the slide is bigeer and heavier..it think the recoil on the 40 and 9 is too snappy
Excellent Vid, Hickock, and more scientific than you think. You can definitely see the difference in recoil. I carry the G29, as you may recall, and you're right; more kick, biut it don't hurt a bit. =)
Interesting premis...I am stuck between the 26 and 27 as I currently carry an XD 3" 9mm but wanting to go to a smaller CCW such as the 26. 34 years of military (Cav) M1911A1 and holding my horse with my left hand ... I enjoyed your presentation. Thanks
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Actually one can calculate the differences in recoil for the different pistols/ammo. To skip all that, the typical 9mm, 40, and 45 ACP out of the factory are about the same muzzle energy but it is the bullet weight (Newton's law of momentum) that determines recoil. Bigger bullet, bigger recoil. Less subjective than the video ... sorry!
One can calculate all sorts of things; the practical experience is about all that matters to me. Difficult to convey, though, through a video, of course.
@hickok45 Indeed. It's easy to oversimplify. There's more to recoil than just momentum and energy. The amount of hot powder gasses, the way the action of the gun operates, the grip design are some of many other factors. Glock seems to have gotten many things right with their design though...
BTW I laughed so hard at that "high capacity, semi automatic assault stapler" :)
Thanks Hickok45. I'm about out of .40 SW ammo and cheap 9mm ammo might justify the purchase of a Glock 26. Your vid seems to indicate I can get almost as much "bang for my buck" with a G26.
I am very impressed with your control of that doubletap 10mm out of the g29. Doubletap ain't no joke, especially when compared to other factory 10mm ammo such as blazer or Remington.
After I got my G20 I have fallen completely in love with the 10mm. I'm considering the G29 for CCW.
I just bought my g29sf today at a gun show and plan to get my CCW next week.
If you are concerned about over penetration, don't be. Most regular factory ammo (remington and the like) are underpowered anyway. Usually barely above .40S&W levels and about even with most .45ACP.
DoubleTap or BuffaloBore have a LOT more power, but in lighter bullet weights (135g-165g) with hollow points, the penetration will be about the same as a heavy grain .40 or .45, but with more energy transfer.
As far as the recoil of the gun goes, with my G20 in its current configuration, I can empty my 15 round clip in a 4 inch group at 7-10 yards as fast as I can pull the trigger. Having less recoil would not allow me to shoot faster and a 4 inch group is perfectly acceptable for combat accuracy. there is no need to shoot 5 bullets in the same hole when your life is on the line.
But that is just me. Some others do have issues with recoil on the 10mm. Try it out. See if you can handle it.
The reason I bought the g20 in the first place was that I believe the 10mm to be the "does everything" round. It is suitable for protection in the woods or the streets, it is terrific fun to shoot at a range or out in the desert, it is very flat shooting and accurate for competition shooting, or long range target shooting, and because of its flat trajectory and high energy, it is a good hunting round as well.
It does everything great. Only two drawbacks, grip size and recoil (for some people)
Glad to hear it! We need more 10mm shooters out there.
There is a local gun shop in my city that is always sold out of 10mm ammo. I asked the owner why he doesn't order more at a time. His answer was "It just isn't a popular caliber. Not good business to order stuff most people never heard of." So I said "But you always sell out..." He looked a little confused and said "Well, yeah.. but it isn't that popular!"
@eFFdRacing I have the glock 27 and I bought a Lonewolf distributers 40-9 conversion barrel. So my 27 is a 40 when I want to change it to a 9 I just drop in the barrel and my glock 17 mags and Is becomes a 9mm pistol. Works great and 9mm are cheaper then 40 ammo.
@tonedamuss Where did you get the conversion barrel and how much did it run you? I've been trying to decide whether to buy a 26 or a 27, and that seems like a great compromise . . .
great comparison. also fyi that assault stapler is Legal in California but only for home protection. NO concealed carry on those, they are just too dangerous.
@dubbys I'm looking for one of those assault staplers, got a magazine plug for it to bring it down to 15 staples?? Jersey aint too kind when it comes to "high capacity" mags :/
If you look closely using the target as a grid, the 9mm seems to rise just as much as the 40sw. 9mm starts @ 3:40and The single fire rises to between the 3rd/4th ring, rapid fire 2 ring. the 40sw, @ 4:43 single rises just about the same maybe a hair higher on average into the 3rd/4th ring and rapid fire seems to be in the 2 ring as well. Maybe a hair more push back but I must say to me there doesnt seem to be that much of a difference and the 40sw seemed extremely controllable
I have had the pleasure of viewing several of hickok's videos and they are all very informative and well done! Thank You, Sir, for your efforts! Your videos are all helpful and interesting.
@fordfan09 Hahahahaaa! Poor Cali folk! I live in Canada and it's pretty tough here too! Maybe not quite as bad getting worse. I love the Glock 20! Iwas considering the 17 as my first but I NEED that 20!! ;)
You can definitely see a progression in the muzzle flip. I can see why some in the FBI didn't like the recoil of the 10mm when it was introduced, which led to the creation of the .40sw as something in between the 9mm and 10mm.
As an "elitemarine" you should know that in defensive loadings the .40 and .45 have about 25% more energy than the 9mm--not earth shattering but a bit of a difference.
Haha just giving you crap. Anyway, for defense loadings a .22 starts around 100 ft-lbs, .38 around 200-250, 9mm around 400, .40 & .45 around 500, .357 Mag & 10mm around 750, and .44 Mag around 1000 ft-lbs.
The AR and AK fire "intermediate" cartridges around 1300-1400, while a real rifle cartridge (.308, .30-06) hits upwards of 3000 ft-lbs. Good info the next time some hand-wringer whines about "high powered" rifles (with <half the energy of a boring old deer rifle).
can you please redue this video with your hd camera, and play it back in slow motion?

I was sort of disappointed when I got the Glock 20 how little recoil it had I guess I was hoping it would have .357 Mag power but I havn't shot any factory ammo yet only handloads. It's possible my (Hodgdon) data might be super-conservative I don't know... It reminded me of a .40 S&W to be honest.

i have a glock .45 and they told me that if i was to dry fire it like you do at the end of each fireing that i am able to damage the gun or make the firing pin fall out of place.

@TheComment555 If it damages your gun, why do you have to dry fire it to feild strip it?
0102josh 1 year ago
@0102josh i didn't knw that it didn't they had told me that it will damage the gun plus i never dried fired any ofmy guns i just make shure that it is empty
TheComment555 1 year ago
hickok45 is exactly right as always. I have personally dry-fired my glocks tens of thousands of time and they still run 100% in competitions. The only modern firearms that will be damaged by dry-fire are rimfire weapons - mainly your .22LR.

@TheComment555 your not suppose to slam the slide on a 1911 model without rounds in the mag ive heard but nothing about dry firing them or the glocks

can dry shooting, like I seen you do at the end damage the glock? I had a Taurus PT 111 Pro 9mm, and I was told not to dry fire for reason that it can damage a gun. Just wonder if that goes for the Glock?
Senicova 1 year ago
@Senicova , I have an FAQ on that.
hickok45 1 year ago
@Senicova you must dry fire the Glock pistols in order to take the slide off them.... whoever told you that was wrong. Each and every time you break the gun down for cleaning you must dry fire it. Obviously this is an intended function and not damaging. I can't speak for every pistol type on the planet, but it does not damage Glocks. I have owned Glock 23, 26, and 38 and never had an issue.
M2fiftycal 1 year ago
@Senicova Just ask yourself: why would Glock make dry firing a requirement of field stripping if it caused damage to the firing pin?
jayfurley 1 year ago
@Senicova
you can dry fire a glock without damaging it, as a matter of fact, you have to dry fire it in order to take it apart to clean it.

your a big guy, i think a smaller shooter would be able to demonstrate the difference better
BALJIT147 1 year ago
40.cal recoil is way too exaggerated. I shoot the G23 and it feels just fine, I don't notice a difference between the G23 and G19. G23 is a great gun all around.

psides83 1 year ago
Do you have a permit for that stapler?
bull068 1 year ago 12
@bull068 , Yes, and I qualified with it at the local police range, but not with hollowpoint ammo. :-)
hickok45 1 year ago 7
@hickok45 Is there any way to conceal carry that stapler? which brand of holster do you recomment? CCW a stapler might be tough, do you known any polymer framed stapler? Any good self defence staple loads out there?
Blazingspitfire 1 year ago
@hickok45 in Tennessee you have to have special permit to carry hollowpoints or I misunderstood it all?

I shot a Glock 23 .40 today the Recoil wasn't bad. It was the first pistol I ever shot. Well I shot a .22 pistol but thats nothing. It was so much fun
Cbluboi01 1 year ago
i think the 29 has the better recoil for a bigger bullet, it also helps maybe cause the slide is bigeer and heavier..it think the recoil on the 40 and 9 is too snappy

Excellent Vid, Hickock, and more scientific than you think. You can definitely see the difference in recoil. I carry the G29, as you may recall, and you're right; more kick, biut it don't hurt a bit. =)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Actually one can calculate the differences in recoil for the different pistols/ammo. To skip all that, the typical 9mm, 40, and 45 ACP out of the factory are about the same muzzle energy but it is the bullet weight (Newton's law of momentum) that determines recoil. Bigger bullet, bigger recoil. Less subjective than the video ... sorry!
NzouHntr 2 years ago
One can calculate all sorts of things; the practical experience is about all that matters to me. Difficult to convey, though, through a video, of course.
hickok45 2 years ago 17
Hey, I'm not criticizing, just making a comment. And bullet weight does affect knockdown, regardless of what limalife says!! :)
NzouHntr 2 years ago
@hickok45 Indeed. It's easy to oversimplify. There's more to recoil than just momentum and energy. The amount of hot powder gasses, the way the action of the gun operates, the grip design are some of many other factors. Glock seems to have gotten many things right with their design though...
BTW I laughed so hard at that "high capacity, semi automatic assault stapler" :)
coolstuffaddict 1 year ago
Thanks Hickok45. I'm about out of .40 SW ammo and cheap 9mm ammo might justify the purchase of a Glock 26. Your vid seems to indicate I can get almost as much "bang for my buck" with a G26.
76y40 2 years ago
I am very impressed with your control of that doubletap 10mm out of the g29. Doubletap ain't no joke, especially when compared to other factory 10mm ammo such as blazer or Remington.
After I got my G20 I have fallen completely in love with the 10mm. I'm considering the G29 for CCW.
KurNorock 2 years ago
im concerned about the penitration/power of the round for ccw.....whats your take on it since youre concidering it and own a g20?
eFFdRacing 2 years ago
I just bought my g29sf today at a gun show and plan to get my CCW next week.
If you are concerned about over penetration, don't be. Most regular factory ammo (remington and the like) are underpowered anyway. Usually barely above .40S&W levels and about even with most .45ACP.
DoubleTap or BuffaloBore have a LOT more power, but in lighter bullet weights (135g-165g) with hollow points, the penetration will be about the same as a heavy grain .40 or .45, but with more energy transfer.
KurNorock 2 years ago
As far as the recoil of the gun goes, with my G20 in its current configuration, I can empty my 15 round clip in a 4 inch group at 7-10 yards as fast as I can pull the trigger. Having less recoil would not allow me to shoot faster and a 4 inch group is perfectly acceptable for combat accuracy. there is no need to shoot 5 bullets in the same hole when your life is on the line.
But that is just me. Some others do have issues with recoil on the 10mm. Try it out. See if you can handle it.
KurNorock 2 years ago
The reason I bought the g20 in the first place was that I believe the 10mm to be the "does everything" round. It is suitable for protection in the woods or the streets, it is terrific fun to shoot at a range or out in the desert, it is very flat shooting and accurate for competition shooting, or long range target shooting, and because of its flat trajectory and high energy, it is a good hunting round as well.
It does everything great. Only two drawbacks, grip size and recoil (for some people)
KurNorock 2 years ago
Thanks very much for the input. I will have to try out some models first but i think you just sold me the g29.
eFFdRacing 2 years ago
Glad to hear it! We need more 10mm shooters out there.
There is a local gun shop in my city that is always sold out of 10mm ammo. I asked the owner why he doesn't order more at a time. His answer was "It just isn't a popular caliber. Not good business to order stuff most people never heard of." So I said "But you always sell out..." He looked a little confused and said "Well, yeah.. but it isn't that popular!"
I just shook my head and left.
KurNorock 2 years ago
@eFFdRacing I have the glock 27 and I bought a Lonewolf distributers 40-9 conversion barrel. So my 27 is a 40 when I want to change it to a 9 I just drop in the barrel and my glock 17 mags and Is becomes a 9mm pistol. Works great and 9mm are cheaper then 40 ammo.
tonedamuss 1 year ago
@tonedamuss Where did you get the conversion barrel and how much did it run you? I've been trying to decide whether to buy a 26 or a 27, and that seems like a great compromise . . .

Thanks for the demonstration!
Bought a G29SF and waiting 10 days to pick it up in Komifornia, even though I have a carry permit!!!
I will be comparing it to my G27.
lizzardwizard2000 2 years ago
The G29 is a nice gun; it's just a lot heavier and thicker than the G27. Of course, it needs to be to fire the 10mm round.
hickok45 2 years ago
@lizzardwizard2000, Dealer ordered a std. G29 by mistake, but it fits OK in my hand.
The 10mm is awesome compared to my 40S&W G27. The G29 has a felt recoil similar to a 1911 45ACP- In my opinion, with better terminal affect!!!
This is a really good video demonstration, but doesn't show how much more muzzle blast and sound the 10mm has.

i agree, there is no one i watch more on youtube, ive seen al of hs vids

If you look closely using the target as a grid, the 9mm seems to rise just as much as the 40sw. 9mm starts @ 3:40and The single fire rises to between the 3rd/4th ring, rapid fire 2 ring. the 40sw, @ 4:43 single rises just about the same maybe a hair higher on average into the 3rd/4th ring and rapid fire seems to be in the 2 ring as well. Maybe a hair more push back but I must say to me there doesnt seem to be that much of a difference and the 40sw seemed extremely controllable

You can definitely see a progression in the muzzle flip. I can see why some in the FBI didn't like the recoil of the 10mm when it was introduced, which led to the creation of the .40sw as something in between the 9mm and 10mm.
tron81 2 years ago
I think it was mostly the female FBI agents that had trouble with it.

as far as the damage done by the bullet is there a huge difference between 40sw JHP and 9mm JHP?
elitemarine55 2 years ago
As an "elitemarine" you should know that in defensive loadings the .40 and .45 have about 25% more energy than the 9mm--not earth shattering but a bit of a difference.
The .40 is also going to expand a bit bigger.

ok well its just a username im not really a marine or anything i just thought i would get a second opinon

bobbytimberlake 2 years ago
