Lee's book is a great book for self-study. I read it and re-read it often. Concepts are explained clearly, and motivation of each development is well-laid out in Introduction section of the each Chapter. In my opinion it is not "verbose".
Another book in same style is Tu's "Introduction to smooth manifolds".
