  • wtf

  • its funny how i found daniel through kurt cobain's top 50 albums. but now, i think daniel johnston is one of the best songwriters to ever walk the earth.

  • Does someone know if we can listen to that song in a better (audio) quality?

  • @AllOfThisCanBeBroken you're kidding right? He cut this on a home tape recorder.

  • Comment removed

  • this is the best version of this song. the original!!!

  • The way he sings "I made a mistake and I never forgot" over the subdued organ is heartbreaking and truly speaks to my struggles with obsessive anxiety.

  • I ate pie before it was cool, it burnt my mouth.

  • pitchfork (dot) com/features/interviews/5841-daniel-johnston/

  • my fiancee is in rehab right now...I just got back from visiting her for the past 10 days in nyc and she proposed to me on the streets of manhattan...she was put in rehab today and I cant fucking handle it...if songs like this didnt exist Id just fucking be a mess Im so scared for my angel thank you daniel thank you so much you have such a beautiful soul and me and my girl listen to your songs on the floor hand in hand high on our love...I cant wait to be back with her, you saved me tonight <:)

  • What makes Daniel Johnston great is that he was a man on the edge whose creations were a coping mechanism, this is what attracts me (and many others) to him, I think. Musically very simple, but so was Robert Johnson. The rawness is what makes the icon in this instance.

  • Beautiful!

  • He's a fucking genius. Period. Such simple songs that have just as much meaning as, say, The Beatles.

  • I lose is way better. Still not fantastic though. And for the arrogant pricks: its not because "i dont get it".. Its because I have certain taste in every type of music.

  • Its alright. Not gonna pop a huge boner for it like many commenters. I dont know about the whole "music thats different = art" thing. If an autistic kid played some shitty music because he really loved to and felt it... Ehhh. This isnt bad but not much to it either. Id listen to modest mouse to get this songs feel. Just my opinion

  • Daniel was a determined artist in my opinion. Any time he wanted to share his music with someone he had to record it, which meant if he wanted 20 people to hear it, he played it 20 times. Now imagine for this song if he messed up on the whistling, he would have to go back and replay it, and re-record the song. He's amazing.

  • i love you DaNiEl!!!!!

  • Daniels' ability to capture an emotion and a abstract realness in his music is what makes him great. True his musicality tends to be more on the simple end, but he still has a spark that cant be taught. Im obsessed with him and Im half way through my music degree. The truth is, no amount of scales, modes, or bloated time signatures can give a song a soul. Daniel was a man who lived like no other and yet his songs can relate to any and all in a weird kind of way.. Long live DJ.

  • good god this guy is awesome!!!

  • Daniel takes the every day thoughts and feelings of the average human and puts them to verse - no polishing for the public or regard to what's going to sell. Just plain feelings.

  • Man I just plain love Daniel, there's no way around it. What an excellent, shining soul

  • i LOL at the people who just dont get it. These people are usually not fans of "art", rather they are admirers of the polished people the big guys promote as the creators. They are fans of this 'ideal' person. True fans of art are attracted to HONESTY not cool hair and technical ability

  • I like people who find meaning in shit when there is none to be had this shit is absolutely terrible.. my ears are now bleeding.

  • @motnella07 What has meaning to you? What music has meaning to you? All art has meaning, it is the cause to some event in the artist life, it's their perception of this world whether its someone rapping about gucci or some kid screaming about murder or this genius singing about his troubled mind it all means something to someone.

  • @richard07960 Yeah and people find meaning in some guy just randomly slinging art on a canvas.. i could shit on the sidewalk and call it art and it technically would be.. this shit is terrible, he has literally no musical talent and if he wasn't crazy no one would give two shits about this man.

  • @motnella07 Really because last I checked I found out about Daniel this morning, listened apprehensively at first, but it grew on me. Only after I listened to the music did I do some research and find out he was 'crazy' and now I love Daniel and his music. So how about this you hateful, ignorant piece of shit, if you don't like the music then go away and listen to your metal or dubstep. Yeah, real talent there.

  • i just started listening to him after i got a daniel johnston shirt bc it was the same one kurt cobain had

  • I liked Daniel since he slipped at Burger King when he was 4.

  • One of the best song writers ever...

  • Forev0:00re more.

  • great track,,love this guy

  • wow... esta canción está buenísima.

  • This comes from one of the most complex minds to ever exist. You can feel the emotions just protruding from his voice. Love love love it. Dime a dozen <3

  • @JoutTHEordinary i think u didnt mean to say dime a dozen? maybe u meant to say one in a million.

  • @TheMistterman Lol nope I meant to say dime a dozen. Lets say both then :D. Either way this man has a beautiful mind and a deep soul

  • @MrBlueButtons I totally agree. He has always been absolutely, brutally honest. And he has always been absolutely, brutally Daniel Johnston.

  • I liked the hammer before it was a tool.

I liked jackets before the Cagoule

  • @Akidcalledgrim

watch the devil and daniel johnston if you have an open mind

  • @numbforthought I've seen it. It was awesome.

  • didn't know he sang this song originally- it makes sense now though. I like this song.

  • i liked daniel johnston before he was born.

  • I liked ice cream before it was cool.

  • Before he was cool/after he was cool... He's ALWAYS been cool

  • I like Daniel Johnston because he's cool.

  • <3

  • This song is so good it hurts. It sounds so simple and yet so intricate at the same time.

  • Daniel Johnston is cool.

  • i just found an other of my friends

  • Man,,, I looked him up and I realized he was so YOUNG in this video,,, is this even him? Forgive me if im wrong,,

  • @thecapone45 It is most def. him...he has been through a lot in the past 25-30 years like lost his teeth and gained a ton of weight from his meds/diet. I worry about his health...

  • This was recorded with a calculator.

    But it still sounds amazing.

  • This is a nice song. Now, I can finally feel it!!! This shit came out when i was just born, in 1983!!!11 HURRAY!!!1111!!!

  • Happy feet mean worried shoes.

  • I was recently introduced to Daniel Johnstons music even though ive been a Cobain fan for years... Now im not gunna be like I know all about Daniel Johnston or any of that but when I listen to his music I understand him. I understand his stories and I just truly now admire him and as a writer he has become quite an influence on me... Love this song!!

  • I saw Daniel Johnston play a couple years ago -(around the time his bio came out) -he has the sweetest of temperaments and lives in torturous and beautiful world that we're all lucky enough to visit through his work. Whether you're a long time fan or newly introduced to his music, it's not a competition, he captivates us all because of his vulnerability and honesty.

  • Inspirational man who possesses many gifts from God:) Great artistry!

  • amazing job i seee great amazing thing happened for you

  • i really don't see where people consider this bad...i mean, it is low quality audio, but i don't see where it's low quality harmony, rhythm, progression, composition, tonality, (maybe the whistling a lil, but whatever)...the things that make music. ya know? unedited, too, so it's pretty much a straight-shot recording. i don't know many musicians who do that anymore...just a handful in the metal dept. who don't allow cut/paste. that's where the newer concept of quality music came from anyway.

  • @unku . You are a cunt. What have you achieved. Fuck all. I hate cunts like you. If you Don't like it then why watch it. Stupid CUNT

  • @theoperatives Dude, you look like an ass when you use that word, its offensive.

  • @unku you dont deserve ears.

  • I love how this guy, Daniel Johnston, can put a smile on my face when I'm feeling down. He's one of the rare artist that come along in a blue moon. People say he's bad, well stop being close minded. Open your mind, and find the emotion & pain. But also look for the joy in it. (:

  • I never knew I liked Daniel Johnston. I am happy to rediscover so many songs I had heard in the past without attribution or heard covered by more popular artists.

  • this song brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it.... such emotion. love you danny J!

  • @blonkyman I actually said the opposite :-) Plus they're both singing American folk music with acoustic guitar so there is a similarity of cord and structure. Just as there is between Doc Watson and Johnston, for instance. I think a much more realistic comparison is between Roscoe Holcomb ("High, Lonesome Sound") and Johnston, though not so much in the content of their lyrics (Holcomb sings traditional songs for the most part.) To each his/her own, though. They (DJ and BD) are both talented.

  • @blonkyman early Dylan and early Johnston are both primarily acoustic, that's about it. You could say equally legitimately that DJ and Slim Whitman are comparable if that's the only basis for comparison. Both BD and DJ do have writing that is great, but DJ writes mostly about himself and BD's much more outwardly orientated. Johnston is not consistent, no matter what people pretend, as if he stumbles into brilliance by accident only on occasion. Dylan is more consistent though many BD songs suck.

  • @svarteboks I do agree with you on how Dylan has writing that is more about himself and Johnston has more outwardly writing, but I also think that they construct their songs similarly and the way they pronounce or phrase things are similar. For example I had lost my mind the way he sings the way he sings is very similar to how early Dylan sounds. That's just me though.

  • god, imagine if daniel johnston had FL studio 9.

  • It is so humorous to read the comments on this post. It's like everyone is trying to come up with something to show what an incredible fan they are of Johnston, comparing him to Dylan (why, exactly?), talking about mental illness. To me if a song can not move you unless you know the artist's history than it sucks, or at least it isn't art. Except for the line he took from the Beatles, the lyrics of this song are fresh and fit perfectly with both the cheap organ and his quavering voice. His best.

  • @svarteboks I can see why some people would compare with Dylan, they are both phenomenal writers and sound similar.

  • i wonder what he felt when this passed through his body and soul

  • that kinda sounds like radiohead, the beatles, and bob dylan put into one.

  • We Found The Five Beatles, ladies and gentlemen!!!! DAniel Jhonston!!!

  • brillante.

  • Why are people saying in regards to mental illness?

  • these people on here talking about how he is cool or used to be cool.... who gives a flying fuck. if i heard this song on the radio or in an elevator i would still think this song is fucking great. so shut the fuck up.

  • @metaltoga342 You never hear stuff like this in elevators. Although, that would be really cool.

  • In my opinion, the greatest song ever written in regards to mental illness.

  • HOLY CRAP I THOUGHT KAREN O WROTE THIS.

this version is like 456423987349876 times better!

  • YES TO CHORD ORGAN! If you are into them check out my vids, I collect, repair and play them. Daniel Johnston was a genius....

  • @Goatboy44spl Is a genius

  • Daniel Johnston was always cool.

  • @IFRZULU Your comparison of Lady Gaga and Daniel Johnston is unnecessary and smacks of false dichotomy. Please don't do that.

  • the only thing i would change about this is making his vocals a bit louder(:

  • Comment removed

  • Daniel Johnston's talent comes from a unique place in his life. He pulled it out of the depths of his own personal hell, and in the raw honesty of his music this experience is conveyed.

  • @sislap87 yes i AM tired of bad quality porn, thats exactly what i was thinking when i typed in this song!! YOU HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE!

  • i liked daniel johnston after he was cool.

  • @boyomeboyo Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

  • @redlerb .... what?

  • @thecapone45 why do u have a pentagram?

  • @haxor758 Lol, i didnt know people looked at my profile,,, Its a heartagram, from singer H.I.M. I liked him for a while but i dont customize my account much so i never changed it.

  • @thecapone45 its on the fuckin messages its right at the side of your comment

  • @haxor758 ..... Idk what u talking bout cuzz i dont see it, maybe thats in your inbox.

  • @thecapone45 use firefox

  • @haxor758 I am

  • @thecapone45 update that shit

  • @haxor758 i have the latest version, and does it even matter? It dont for me. Now you can go ahead and reply, but i wont read it nor will i reply, but you can go ahead and waste your time if you want, (:

  • @thecapone45 What? does that make any fucking sense all i said was update it lol "im not gunna reply waste your time" for one thats just being a stupid dick and for 2 do i give a shit? nope just randomely decide to go on your period thats fine

  • I love that you can just barely hear him whistling.

  • y'know...don't pity the man who has the capacity to realise and reflect this sort of..erm...soul-juice-essence..appreciate what is shamefully a rare quality in men and pity yourselves

  • what attracts me to daniel johnston is the creativity. you just know that his music and his art is from deep inside his heart. He was given this amazing talent and he used to tto express all his emotions. a troubled artist with nothing but love in his heart. thats daniel johnston. such unique style of art. makes me want to be liek him, in that hes able to pour his heart out in his God given talent.

  • this is probably the only man who can speak to me deep down....dillion, strummer....lennon....johnson...bb king....good writers but they never spoke to my soul....only my heart...this man gets inside and doesnt leave

  • this is incredible

  • @Squibfire I think tha'ts relevant to the human situation. These feelings that are supposed to be bad and avoided ofen mean being more connected to things and sensitive to beauty.

Johnston is a great perormer, but at the same time something could be said for some of his songs being recorded with better equipment. Though i don't like any of the covers i've heard as much as the originals -- except i really like Karen O's cover of this.

  • this is great. daniel johnston influenced a lot of music. he has a unique style and beautiful lyrics. i weep.

  • this song is what every musician hopes to achieve i cant even put it in words how pure and beauitful it is

  • Daniel Johnston is a great song wrighter but a bad performer.. but i guess thats not the point of his music..

  • @silverface125 you are obviously not a musician, or are a retard.

  • i feel bad, when i first found out about Daniel i totally didnt get it and i used to make fun of him all the time but then one day i was really depressed over something and i dont know why but i put on one of his songs and it just super clicked with me and suddenly i started liking all the songs i used to hate, im sorry for ever doubting you Daniel

  • Love Danny J. One of my favs. I entered a contest on a website, and it was a live contest, and I played a song .. and one of the persons judging it said, "Whoa I thought he was going into Daniel Johnston or something..." Kinda cool.

  • How can you not look at this man and see pain?

  • @bawhite125 I don't see pain, I see expression.

  • this song is so raw.

I love it. this is artistry <3

    such beautiful lyrics.

I believe the piano chords in the Karen O version better suit the lyrics. I love her version. but, I cannot compare it to the emotion here.

    I'm blown away.

  • you can really feel all of his emotions and energy through his work

  • love him <3

  • Wasn't this song on the Butt Fisting sessions?

  • Such a great song. I love this guy.

  • poor Daniel. we'll always love him

  • @mustbejames1 not poor daniel. if you pity him youre just putting him to shame.. which is the worst thing you can do to anyone. MR T DONT PITY NO ONE BITCH

  • @mustbejames1 dont say poor daniel. shame is the worst feeling ever. and pitying causes that.

  • @Job4aPirate well sorry but thats how i feel....i just feel bad for him kind of. he lost his mind, he shakes like a nesquik because of his illnesses, and I felt he shoulda gotten more attention. and yeah, to make more money because Daniel didnt want to do anything but music. its all he knew, its all he could cope with and work at without losing it completely...such a shame, but amazing. :)

  • What's with all these people saying "I liked Daniel Johnston before he was cool!" Seriously, stop it. It makes YOU sound like the poser.

  • @MindBloodandDark Johnston has always been cool ;)

  • @MindBloodandDark THAT'S WHAT WE CALL BE A HIPSTER. u_u

  • @MindBloodandDark It's Hip to say that lol ;)

  • @MindBloodandDark THANK YOOU!!! im just getting into this guy and hes my hero man like hes amazing .. he was always kool btw

  • @MindBloodandDark

    hahaha

  • @MindBloodandDark

    hahaha

  • @MindBloodandDark

I'm pretty sure he's always been cool.

  • @MindBloodandDark i don't think Daniel Johnston was ever cool. And, unless you were living in west Texas, you pretty much discovered Daniel Johnston by the "Hi, how are you?" T-shirt fashioned by the late Kurt Cobain--like the rest of us. He's more of an artist than a musician, if you can plainly listen.

  • @bulletsforkids He had a following in and around Austin before the whole Cobain-shirt-thing.

  • @MindBloodandDark That's just something hipsters say....they ruin everything.

  • @MindBloodandDark Youre sooo cool

  • I love the way Daniel claims not to be able to sing. Such nonsense. This is true music. :)

  • @1gaia Yeah too right... It seems the best song writers dont have what people would call a traditionally 'good voice'. But its more the way they get there voice to sit with the music and express themselves.

  • It's a shame you can barley hear him.

  • @DeadJ0ker27 thats the point, well not point but beautyy of it, he uses shitty recording equipment he couldnt afford anything else. a true starving artist

  • @mustbejames1

Not really. I don't care about the backstory. I just like the music.

  • Wow, he has an awesome voice. Got here from the WhereTheWildThingsAre. This is adorable, and just... wow. :')

  • This is so amazing. I had no idea Karen O covered this song. I loved it in WTWTA and it's the reason I got into the YYYs. So when I was listening to yip jump and it just came up I was completely fuckin taken by surprise.

  • well i just glad he wrote it...

  • This irritates me, how Karen O has more views for this song, than the original..

daniel deserves more than this ><

  • @otherlifes Somehow, I doubt the singer himself would care who had more views on Youtube.

  • The first time I came across this song, I guess it changed my life o.o

  • A cheap keyboard, cheap cassette recorder, and a truly deep and troubled artist. This one comes from the heart of Daniel Johnston. No recording studio could recreate this. A beautiful version of a great song.

  • @scientist1882 that cheap keyboard is actually a cheap 'chord organ'

  • @scientist1882 haha could you imagine if he was in a room with a bunch of producers execs etc....... the looks on their faces

  • a pack of marlboros, and copious amounts of substance will never replace this, i have tried

  • so this is where Fishboy got it from

  • Amazing simplicity, yet a truly memorable song. Maudlin under the skin. beautiful. CdR:(

  • What key is this in?

  • gorgeous..

  • Beautiful.

  • this interests me.. but idk at time it sounds just like noise but not that good.

    it's ok :]

to over powering though in my opinion.

  • @pfftpens2 It's imperative that you peel away that "noise" (which is, to me, all sound is anyway) to see the genius behind Daniel Johnston.

  • @CarlosIsDown I meant: " (which is, to me, all music is anyway) "

  • i love that certain period of his earleyest work where his songs sound like starw berry field ish way better then the beatles Genious Daniel is A genious a legond I place him Right Up with hendrix
