This method is good as a guideline, but once you start drawing actual portraits you will find that some people's faces don't fit that grid so perfectly. Most people have one eye a tiny bit higher than the other, for example, or their nose is wider or skinnier than you would expect

My art teacher told me you should never smudge with your finger, is this just for when you are drawing with regular pencils or is it okay to smudge when using things like charcoal? :)

I hate the guidelines and all that measurement. I do better when I don't draw distracting lines all over the place. I wish someone would show techniques where you don't need lines everywhere and refer to different shapes to draw facial parts. Not that you don't do good tutorials...

The head is an egg shape. The eyes are in the middle. The Eyebrows are 1 eye above. From the eyebrows to the chin half is the bottom of the nose. Half up is the hair line. Drawing a perfect triangle from the eyes down the middle will touch the top of the lips. In between the eyes in the middle, moving straight just outside of the nostrils is as small as the lips can be in neutral. The middle of the eyes is as wide. The lips is 1/3 distance from the nose to the chin. I always use these rules!! :D

@Coolgirl0090 u can really use any pencil but to be more efficient u can use the "b" pencils. like B2 B6 ex.

it is fine to use a regular pencil. to blend it(so it's not just a bunch of lines,) u can use a q-tip or blending stub over the shading parts
