and when it comes to the few stuff in scientology that might actually be usefull... you can get that online or from the freezoners for free. and without all the lies. scientology is organized crime, period.
I think one's stance towards Scientology is all about religious education: if you have been in touch with some sort of religion, and if you have been somewhat educated and cautioned, you are pretty unlikely to fall for them. If you just naively chance upon them, you might be in trouble. Especially as I have heard from various sources that their entry courses are really quite good (and cheap).
tubedupe: if you are a member of any particular religion, this means that you have already started to believe in bullshit, this means that the chances that scientology can get you are very high. and if scientology doesnt get you, then another cult like the baha'i or mormons or LDS will.
if you already managed to figure out that religion is bullshit, and when the concept of faith rings your alarm-bells, and when you question your beliefs, then it might be difficult for cults like scientology.
Except that many people are happy being apart of religion, and it keeps them going. Scientology just keeps draining you of happiness and money. I'm not religious myself, but I don't condemn everything religion does, I just wish for people to have the ability to question their beliefs every now and then.
"if you already managed to figure out that religion is bullshit"
Man is religious by nature. Some of us believe in science ("scientism"?); some in a god, some in ourselves, some in agnosticism. But we all believe in something. We can't help it. :)
beliefs can be based on empirical evidence, observable facts, common sense, the scientific method, repeatable experimental results, and modern philosophy.
beliefs can also be based on ignorance, ancient texts, warm fuzzy feelings, and beliefs can be the results of perpetuous deception, lies, and the tricks of con artists. but this makes our societies less humane, and less able to improve.
there is only one reality. religion causes people to detach from that reality.
Your religion is that of the empiricist, then. In insisting on its inherent superiority, you've become every bit the dogmatist that you decry in others.
We've now left this video behind though; I'll stop here. Internet arguments are rarely productive anyway. :-)
when you stand up in the morning, decide that you want toast as part of your breakfast, and then realize that there is no toast left in your home right now, and you decide to eat something else, then you are being empirical. you deal with the facts. how much faith does it take?
if your definition of religion is so warped that empiricism, whatever you mean by that, is a religion, then arent the republican party and mcdonalds religions too? whats your definition?
You've skipped over an assumption you make, in your example. The assumption is against any possible "deus ex machina". How can you justify that assumption?
Also, of course mundanities lend themselves readily to empirical handling, but what about deeper issues like what is "right" or "wrong" -- or whether those even exist at all?
YT sux for deep debates, so I'll probably lay off on that note.
Amazing realization (for me): It's OK to be [seen as being] wrong. :)
They exist, just not showing up under the related videos section for some reason (probably youtube's fault). If you click Mark's Youtube account name and look at through his videos you can find all 5 of them.
It's no surprise that WISE picks up so many chiropractors, because chiropractors use the same anti-scientific, try-it-and-see hook that Scientology uses.
I tried it and it worked instantly for my back spasms. And it cost me under $100, cash, done in 1 visit, under an hour, no further treatment necessary, never got hassled/spammed after.
I'm perfectly happy with what I got from that chiro and would go again any time and freely recommend same to anyone I meet.
Seems that there is some broad-brushing going on re: chiropractors.
This is exactly why you have to learn to question everything. Most people will just go with the flow to not disrupt the heard but Co$ is the perfect example of what happens when you don't stand up for yourself.
I liked when they were outraged when they shoved the way to happiness into the school system. He's like "well it's good stuff, it has good advice, but since it was written by Blubbard they wrote an article in the local newspaper about us." Really? What he failed to realize is that this way to happiness is a stepping stone of indoctrination into the Co$. His local community felt betrayed because it was not made transparent that this was a Co$ front group promoting Blubbards tech.
I totally agree with the both of you. Scientology, MLM, Kevin Trudeau. These people are poster children for the gullible book smart individuals. Too bad they do not teach skepticism in schools and colleges. If they did I am sure most of them would be forced to shut down. The amount of useful knowledge I got through (overpriced) formal education where like grains of gold in a ton of mud.
Don't stress yourself over it, youtube's horrible at this sort of stuff. I let a video upload over night, and it still didn't actually upload (the video is only about a minute long, too).
That was a fascinating watch. They seemed like two very intelligent, well-spoken people, and I guess that the fact that they were sucked in serves as a perfect illustration of just how seductive Scientology can be. I'm glad they managed to get out and move on with their lives.
Any body who is intelligent and has a high opinion of their intelligence can fall prey for these kinds of con games. There is no easy way out. We all have to take actions based on incomplete information. One needs to have self-esteem, but one also needs to be self-critical. I myself choose a heuristic approach. Understand the risk and the worst possible outcome before I jump in. Research on the expereinces of similar people in such similar circumstances. Like this, it helps.
""Scientology is a stupid fucking cult and its members will be brought down hopefully soon"
I'd like its members brought _out_ instead. They're down enough right now. "
great comment. if we dont agree on religion, and even while you think science requires faith (which is wrong, science is definitiviely not a religion), we can agree that scientology is destructive to its members.
As long as there's no force or fraud, people should be free to do, read, think, and believe whatever they prefer. Labels such as "faith" or "religion" or "science" or even "cult", while often useful, are ultimately cosmetic. What matters most are the actions taken by individuals. Where those actions become harmful toward others, intervention by outsiders becomes proper. Barring that, we should all be free. MHO.
Their certainly brave to come out and talk about it... but what a pair of moorons they are!

Kevin Trudeau was banned by FTC for fraud. Co$ should be banned as well. Seems like these people know businesses that deal with fraud very well.

This man suffers from a common syndrome that educated people suffer from. They are book smart but not street smart. No common sense whatsoever.

I'd like its members brought _out_ instead. They're down enough right now.

great comment. if we dont agree on religion, and even while you think science requires faith (which is wrong, science is definitiviely not a religion), we can agree that scientology is destructive to its members.
kurtilein3 2 years ago 2
As long as there's no force or fraud, people should be free to do, read, think, and believe whatever they prefer. Labels such as "faith" or "religion" or "science" or even "cult", while often useful, are ultimately cosmetic. What matters most are the actions taken by individuals. Where those actions become harmful toward others, intervention by outsiders becomes proper. Barring that, we should all be free. MHO.
