I think they knew exactly what they were doing, they wanted to make the ending shocking. I mean few people would expect a show that starts off all cute and romantic to turn dark and disturbing at the last minute.

However the best ending is the hentai version of school days. he ends up with both of them and more. It an official release for people over 18.
