I give it two thumbs up, a must see for those seeking quality movies. This was well before computer animation, fx, and complex digital arrangement. Very creative.
I remember as a small boy being blown away by the compact/functional equipment Draper used on Mars, particularly the video cassette, real cutting edge at the time.

That's an interesting technique they used in this film. Their primary ship moved so fast you could barely see it. Even freezing the frame doesn't show a clear shot. Not bad for its time.
Except for the inaccuracy of a fiery atmosphere on Mars(understandable considering no probe had been there yet when this was made), this is all pretty tight for 1964.
One of the more intelligent sci-fi films, with a well-written script & high production value (for the era & budget). Death Valley, CA, was used quite effectively as a stand-in for Mars. Though not as extensive as, say, John Williams' "Star Wars" scores, Nathan Van Cleave's music is quite good, especially the main theme (some may recognize his name as composer of the music for several episodes of the original "Twilight Zone" series, 1959-64, and introducing the use of the Theremin to television).
A very entertaining movie,I remember seeing this on one of my Matinee Satudays when I was a kid. It had me fascinated with the special effects and the Alien slave ships were the Martian walkers from George Pal's War of the Worlds, they just painted them white and removed the serpent gun on top.
@jay55also Although the alien spacecraft in "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" had the same shape as the Martian war machines in "War of the Worlds," they were different models. The models used in "War of the Worlds" were large, made from sheet copper over a wooden frame, and rigged for lighting effects. The models for RCOM were smaller and roughly carved from solid wood, with the pulsating light effect added with animation in postproduction.
Well, you knew it was only a matter of time, but Adam West finally found his way into the Criterion Collection. Now if only Bruce Campbell would follow suit...
I first saw this in a drive-in theater during its initial release. Happened to be making a walk from the car to the theater restroom when one of the alien gunships cut loose with a volley. All the little speakers in the theater let loose with the sound effect, and I almost didn't need the restroom!
I always thought that one of the plot holes was that they had food on the ship and the supplies they needed, but they went down were there was none. Although they explain later that the orbiter was programmed to descend on it's own. I wish they'd remake this movie, but I fear they'd mess it up, they'd probably introduce swearing, drug use and all sorts of other things that weren't in these older movies.
@Eddiesix looks like kindergarden next to kubrik's 2001...and to think that is only a couple of years apart...unbelievable dude....i like it too...camp fun, bring it on
Despite it's flaws..I like this sci fi aventure film.I first saw it at The Wakefield Movie Theater in the Bronx,NYC back in 1964. And to this day..I still enjoy watching it.
@johnnyphoenix74 The scenes on the surface of Mars were filmed in California’s Death Valley with the Martian sky matted in. It was a pretty effective illusion when this picture was made, considering that most alien planets in movies back then looked like sets on soundstages -- or like Griffith Park.
I have always liked the film, could have done without all the Man Friday/Alien stuff, but I guess Mars by itself was not exciting enough for a movie, just a guy surviving on Mars, so they had to put in the other stuff.
For the time this film was made, I think it's really an excellant film, not your standard mindless astronaut meets monster/robot/space thing. It really stands alone as a good story.
perhaps my favorite space movie of all time. even though this was produced about 15 yrs or so before i was born i can still appreciate the plot and the special effects. i love sci fi classics. thanx youtube
Thanks for posting, brings back memories of a time of the beginings of manned space flight. I was 10 years old when this movie first came out in 1964. My dad took me to a drive-in movie theater to see it. Saw it at the Centennial Drive-In near Littleton, Colorado, which is no longer there. This is one of the movies that get me interested in space exploration.
The title of this movie suggests thats it's really naff, but i thought this was an excellent movie from the first time i watched it in the 1980's, i have always been a sci-fi movie fan and taken in consideration in the year it was made they really did a good job and with a excellent story line.
I first saw this movie in 1966 in 7th grade. The school would show part each day for 25 cents. Took all week to see it, but I've always like this one.
Special thanks should go to Zuke05, yes, and to the Criterion Collection for having the saavy to understand that certain so-called "B" films have great social, cultural, and historical value and should be preserved and made available.
This was an important movie. It helped change the idea of spacemen and space exploration from one of 1950s buck rogers' clean mystical technology to an attainable realworld-difficult idea. The viewer empathizes and feels they can understand what it takes to explore a planet like mars.
It sparked the imagination of millions of people to realize that it takes science, curiousity, diligence, and observation to make headway into space.
The title may have actually prevented the movie from being more successful. "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" sounds like a kiddie flick or a Disney film. In fact, to this day, some people get it confused with the Disney movie "Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N.", which was a comedy set during World War II in the Pacific and starring Dick Van Dyke. And had nothing to do with Mars.
This is STILL one of my all time favorite movies to watch over and over again! I do the same with The Day the Earth Stood Still. Thanks so much for the post!
thank you for posting mate I love this movie, calling Lucas and Co :D this needs a remake

really missed the boat with this one by not making it a weekly series or at
least making one or two sequel movies. What a shame.

In 1962, Mars Attacks Cards Came into being.
In 1964, This Movie Came out.
In 1964, my Parents took me with them to Reno, NV. Back then it was mainly, an adult gambling town. Not much for children. BUT>>
The only theater in Reno at the time had a great double bill.
This Movie headlined with George Pal's War Of The Worlds. 1st. time I got to see both & on the Big Screen.
I've been hooked on all 3 ever since!
I've seen this movie at least 4 time on the Big Screen.
