Just to add my two cents - this song was originally about moving to san francisco and being accepted. it was a village people song. the pet shop boys did a cover and the context was that the cold war just ended (1989) and so it was a nice concept video. either way it remains a gay anthem

Dear acer., Yes yes, you're quite right. . The village people are better at geography than The Pet Shop Boys, probably because they had a hit "In The Navy", where they'd sailed the seven seas. . Really to go from Moscow to San Francisco, the direction is North East; to NYC, would be simply North. . Going West from Moscow would land one in Morocco. . Rasputin and other Moscovites would be better off going to the travel agents which is two doors up, rather than to The Pet Shop. Cheers.

Meaningful song!

Though the visual aspects of the video are, I think, are silly. It comes across as, bringing two obvious opponents (Russia and USA) to one idealist view, that being the westernised "American way".

Ideally, it's best to not mix different world politics with fun and meaningful songs that don't refer to opposing unions.

The video obviously should've referred to fun and pride!

this song was originally written by the Village People in 1970 as a tribute to the gay movement. Village People is a band originated from San Francisco. as far as the original song writers' intent, Go West has nothing to do with Soviet Union irrespective the Pet Shop Boys video. yes, one may assume this is a Gay Anthem.
