She couldn't have built this place in Chicago huh? No way? Girls there don't need a "leadership" academy? Or girls in the US in general? Did South Africa and its citizens make her a billionaire, which in turn provided her with the spare $40 MILLION to open up such a school? HELL NO! It was the white women of the US that made her a billionaire. And what ties does she have to South Africa? NOTHING. Absolutely NOTHING

I love Oprah. A true angel. She makes me cry. She makes me believe there is still good in the world, and honest-to-god good leaders such as her. We can change the world.
I think that the world is divided into good people and bad people who choose to act the way they do... your race doesn't decide who you are... and i think oprah made a wonderful decision to help those lovely girls... i dont understand why she was criticised for that...
Those girls are not going to want to date those dusty little boys over there now that they are getting use to the "high life". They will end up like successful American black women, either not preferring the knuckleheads they have to choose from or being sponges for desperate broke men who see a female as their only way out of homelessness!
Shame be on to you! There more Good South African men than good American African men. That is simply due to population differences. Don't eat everything one sets before you.
I doubt that very much. I hear everyday about how those South African men are spreading AIDS/HIV like there is no tomorrow and running around with every woman they see. STOP LYING!!!! When those little girls get those big time degrees and start making mad money those men will only try and use them. Trust me!
I am American, I have been there. I am quite sure you can not say the same. There is one thing that is always true of American blacks and whites. You hear much and know nothing. Step out of the comfort of your white veiled continuation and experience the world before you pass your inexpert judgment on it. Most of the crime is caused by illegal immigration.
You should not devalue an entire community to the criminal/anti-social element. Are all white people racist? Are all black men drug dealers? Are all black women loud and rude? If you answered yes to any of those queries. You are an ignorant fool.
This is a good initiative but not a great initiative...You cannot create leaders by giving gifted students an academic education only; it's the biggest mistake that we made in Africa after colonisation ended. The result: millions of educated Africans living in the West; professors, doctors, engineers, whose education was paid by Africans and who are useless to this continent.
Africa is not short of highly educated people, but you need more than that to become a leader...
women have changed the face of western countries where they did not had access to most of the jobs that men had about 50 years ago, i don't see why this can't happen in Africa.
Who are these girls going to marry? Are they going to be single mothers and have casual sex with illiterate men?
A leader must also be rooted in a community, otherwise who are they going to lead? Leaders must be able to relate to their people and communicate with them. They must share their people's aspirations and understand their needs.
They must be willing to work for their people, at any price!
These girls may not be willing to go back to their people and lead them when they get used to an expensive lifestyle that requires a very high income. In poor countries, leaders who have expensive tastes are more easily corrupted.
In short, 40 million dollars can create quite lot of priviledged people but will not necessarily turn them into leaders; and we already have a lot of priviledged people in Africa anyway...
It's good for the girls, but I don't know about Africa.
Life is all about self image..if these girls see themselves as leaders, then that's who they are...It's all about how you see yourself. Who cares who they marry...that will take care of itself....don't be so negative.
protool11..when you have an education, you can become anything..you make it sound like there are no professionals in South Africa...get a passport and travel...stop watching the discovery channel and see the world....Africa is not all poverty and people do get out of poverty into wealth.
better than doing nothing.Going to a good school does not mean that they will be uprooted. These girl are just having the same opportunity (if not better) as people like Nelson Mandela who as you know is a lawyer.
in Africa and specially among women.I'll like to remind you that colonisation is not over in most counties of Africa. The same colonial system is going on through african puppets and that's the cause of this failure. How many african presidents are elected in a fair and democratic way?
several months ago in Feb/March of 2007. She JUST opened it up. Hey - THANKS for sharing openly about this show! I hope more people get the DVD to watch it in its entirety.
Studies have shown that positive social change happens when the women of a community are empowered. For example, the Grameen Bank awards loans primarily to women because women are more concerned about the educational well fare of their children, the future and well-being of the entire family, and have proven to be more reliable to pay back loans.
In a patriarchal society where only the men in the household have the financial power, families suffer as most men (I hate to generalize but one must when looking at sociological trends) care solely about power and their own personal wants, while the women and children are often neglected and abused.
Through micro-finance, one is transforming patriarchal societies into matriarchal ones, placing power in the mother's hands, which reduces domestic violence, and leads to progressive educated families and communities. But to further answer your question, the next school Oprah is building is a co-ed school accepting both girls and boys.
How inspiring! It motivates me to put more effort into helping the young girls and women in my life! Inspire them to have "it" and show them how they can get "it".
Aloha Najeen. THANK YOU for getting the entire DVD from Oprah dot com. I'm sooooo glad this little piece of the show inspired you to do more to help young girls become leaders. Your action just set another wave of leaders in motion. I love it!
I bought the DVD -- it is excellent. Empowering. I have always working with young girls but now I want to do even more with young girls seeing what Oprah has started. It is truly inspirational. Thank you for posting!
THANK YOU so much for posting this.I missed it both times that it aired,I wish I could have seen the whole thing but this is great.I love Oprah for all the great things that she does.
Aloha VonkaVonka, You're welcome! Glad to inspire you. I highly recommend you get the DVD to see the entire show - this was one powerful glimpse of the project - but every single minute of this show was inspirational, and heart-lifting. By the end, I had tears streaming from my face to see the future beind unfolded before my very eyes. The DVD shares other girls' amazing stories - you can't even imagine fighting some of these odds!

Besides, the idea that women will change the face of Africa is presumptuous and preposterous.
Successful societies are made up of men and women who work in partnership.
Women can never be successful without the support of their men and neither can men be successful without the contribution of their women.
You need both sexes to make a society work, at all levels and in every social class.

I agree with you Liloba2006. I thought the same thing.
What will these girls do when its time to leave that school. Even for short summer periods? Will they relate to their families and the others?
It seems hard if they get use to such an extravagant lifestyle while all their family members are living in poverty.

Hi Liloba,
it's very easy to criticized. You should better
suggest what would be the best thing to do.
Doing something even symbolic would always be
better than doing nothing.Going to a good school does not mean that they will be uprooted. These girl are just having the same opportunity (if not better) as people like Nelson Mandela who as you know is a lawyer.

oprah wanted to give girls with potential a chance to go to school she chose the poorest girls because they may not get a chance to go further on
