i watched this to remind me that marines do an awesome job at taps and flag fold for the men and wommen who served in the marines . they had a soldger from lowest to the highest rank at my grandpas funeral.1 bar taps 2 bars folding 3 bars holding the other side of the flag at my grandpas funeral. rip grandpa and your dad
Worst flag folding i have ever seen, As I member of the Army Honor Guard, that was disgraceful to watch... The excuse that it was windy is a very poor one. I have done Two man folds in all types of weather, and never once had to bring it back or refold it....Sorry for the loss to the loved ones.
My prayers go with you and your family! This always makes me think of my daddy and we had this ceremony too. I know what your going through! It's hard to hold back the tears!
The honor guard team is garbage, the flag touched the casket a dozen times, and what is up with the chef Boyardee Barets?!?!?! way to give final honors. No way would I give the family a bleeding flag. It makes me sick seeing this and being part of an Honor Guard team.
The Phrase is supposed to be:
"On the behalf of the President and the people of a greatful nation, I present this flag as a token of appreciation for the faithful and honorable service your loved one has rendered our nation."

The honor guard team is garbage, the flag touched the casket a dozen times, and what is up with the chef Boyardee Barets?!?!?! way to give final honors. Was that a flag being folded, or where they holding a hammack? Garbage, garbage, garbage. It makes me sick seeing this and being part of an Honor Guard team.
I have been a Navy Honor Guard for 2 years now. i have done just over 230 funerals. i can say that every flag isn't cut perfect each one is different and the #1 rule to folding flags is just roll with it. work as you go along. But these guys are horrible and should be reprimanded for their UNIFORMS! i live in a small town in MA. and they supplyed me with the white gloves. its a symbol that our hands aren't pure enough to touch our nation ensign! this should be brought up immediately
I'm sorry for the loss of that troop. that was a terrible service my the army. I am on the honor guard in MA and that team would never work with us. that E-6 should be ashamed of herself. her beret looked like someone just took a shit on her head. how she earned E6 is beyond me looking like that. no white gloves when touching the flag draped over a veteran. waaaay too much red showing, terrible flag fold. no tension while folding. disgrace to me...
Are they army cadets? I do not like how they did it, the flag was loose and there was red showing if they are doing this as a team then they need more practice.
Remember, always allow an overlap of an inch on the first long fold, then on the 2nd fold to the bottom lap. On the 3rd fold to the middle of the top red stripe.Always fold the tip of the triangle to the bottom lap and the inch overlap will cover the open edge.Make sure that when you reach the 1st star to touch it. If you are under, you're too long, past the star you're too short at the end.Remember always have a clear inch overlap all the way to the end. only way to avoid the RED showing.
Very sorry for your lose. Its too bad that your detail can't properly fold a flag. I've seen cadet details do much better (details that I have been on) and wish that the detail assigned to you had taken more time to prepare. If it was last minute, then I understand.
I'm very sorry for your fathers passing. Although I am very happy that he received the honors that he very well deserved. Signed a fellow Navy veteran USN(Ret)
OMG i have never seen such a terrible performance. Everyone in this detail needs to QUIT!! It saddens me to see how this is the way that you honored the loved one!! You guys SUCK! Read THE BOOK next time!!!!!
I've actually been on a funeral team before and agree that they needed more rehearsal time. When we were given the detail there was no 'book' we rehearsed different ways over and over until we found one that fit. Oh, and theres no honor in what we are doing to iraqi or afghan people. -SGT M
I do Honor Guard 3 times a week, I have 200 all in all. Most of the time we fold the flag according to DOD protocol.
When flag is folded correctly, no red should be showing at all, this one red everywhere, it symbolizes that the sun had set and the deceased veteran as well.
I am glad the these honor guard had re-folded the flag. I hate to retrieve the flag from the next of kin.
But the bottom line is, These Honor guard Detail paid respect to our fallen comrade.
what i just witnessed is a good display of unexperienced soldiers not knowing what they are doing....lack of discipline and practice...it's pretty much the worst flag i've ever seen...makes active duty look very very bad...
Unfortunately sjcaddy is right. With no disrespect to the deceased, the honor guard was very sloppy, and the fold is terrible. Every veteran deserves the best, but unfortunately this is not something the DOD trains well on (aside from actual Honor Guard units.)
Its never easy when someone dies. I am glad to hear that they did refold the flag. The presentation was great. Its hard when the spouse hugs the presenter. I have a hard enough time when they are calm.
Its unfortunate that there were not well-trained honor guard available. It was very sloppy and there is a lot of Honor Guard protocol that was missed.
My grandpa, a WWII vet just died about a week ago and his funeral a couple days ago they did this with him. He had been 83 and he had been honourably discharged since 1946.
I wanted to replay what is said at the flag presentation.
i'm not quite sure of your age young man but, you should always hold your head high when you speak of your grandfathers funeral. it appears he was an honorable man of great courgage and willing to sacrifice for his beloved country. sorry for your loss...thank you for your posting.
Any honorably-discharged veteran can receive this cermony, along with a headstone and plot at a military cemetery.
The burial rights of a qualified veteran are authorized by Congress.
We just buried my dad and he wanted his flag, 21 gun salute, and taps. He was a WWII vet and died some 63 years after his service.
I will be4 posting his flag folding ceremony in the near term, which provides the reasons (as presented by the VFW) as to why the flag is folded the way it is.
Have you ever served a cause greater than yourself. Ever put someone else's well-being before yourself. Has anyone in your family done this. I am trying to be tolerant, but this puts a burr in my backside. I suggest you go to a veteran's home and talk with some of these heroes. They are humble men who do not believe they did anything special. All they did was for some period of time put their life on hold and put it in Harm's Way for YOU! I ask that you take a day to visit these men.
Another problem with folding flags is that the practice flags have been used over and over and are already stretched and worn, even when fairly new.... so folding a brand new flag is difficult, and the fact the flags used sometimes are not to standard which is what honor guards practice with. I've folded about 10 flags, but once we did request to refold one. The family was kind enough to let us of course.
Sorry for your loss. I would like to add that whoever the team was that performed the military honors, should be reprimanded for the terrible, unacceptable flag fold. It is obviously a hard time for any family to lose a loved one, but for the honors team to do such a "hack" job, is unacceptable. I would hope that you or your family sent a letter to the servicing regional office(as I don't know where the team is from) expressing your dissatisfaction with the detail. Again, my condolences. CW2BSH
Thank you for the condolences. Well for everyone who has commented about the flag-folding job. It was an extremely windy day on a hill overlooking the ocean. If you listen to the video w/the sound, you can hear the wind. The flag-folders were in the Reserves as there is no active military personnel in our immediate area anymore. And yes, directly after the ceremony, they did, without prompting, re-fold the flag.
man, im very sorry. me and my family got a letter today, that my older brother was killed in iraq. :(. so....our family will be getting an merican flag.
im so sorry my respect to your brother god bless you and your family and all the other Americans who lost there freinds and family to war and god bless the USA
i'm dearly sorry for your loss, and i am on the honor guard in mn, and that funeral detail should be slapped, because that flag was folded very wrong. there is WAY too much red showing! it should have been rejected and re folded.
I am in the Coast Guard, and will be doing this for a 30 year vet's funeral on Saturday. Glad this video was here to see how it is done. God Bless you and your family, and I am thankful for his service...it will not be in vain.
im very sorry for your loss But may God bless you and your parents (:

This was sad to watch. Brought back memories. Sorry for your loss.
I came upon this while looking for ways to fold a flag. The Final Honors link on the side is pretty good. It had about six people folding.
What display case did you use? I need to find one but haven't liked what I've seen online so far.

The fold was sloppy. The words he used in the presentation weren't regulation.
TAPS was played properly - and on areal bugle - not the FAKE one they used all too often.
