  • "DM as director and players as actors" bad metaphor

  • I don't get why people (like my parents) think DnD is an antisocial game... My brother sits in front of the Xbox by himself for hours on end. I sit at a table with six of my friends for hours on end... Who's being more social?

  • I DM a small group of 5 in a world I created myself, with inspiration from all my favorite cultures and historical moments, and video games I like. Did I forget to mention we're the popular kids at my school? D&D is awesome. Don't matter whether your 30, or 16.

  • I've always loved telling stories, and I love being a DM. It'd be nice to play a character once in a while sure. But I get alot of joy out of watching my friend's reactions to the stories I've made as they unfold infront of them.

  • I REALLY want to try this but i probablly can't as i live In N.I there are no DnDrs in N.I its not fair cos i love RPGS

  • When I first started my group I wanted one of my friends to DM. When the day finally came he wanted to be a PC. So I took the roll of the DM and loved it. I love engrossing my friends in the adventure while busting out jokes. Ive never gotten that kind of experience from any video games Ive ever played. I'd like to think I have the elements necessary to be a DM. Im fairly imaginative, open minded, I like to challenge my players(though I never want to win), and I even throw in a bit of RP.

  • D&D the Shit think otherwise flip your Chair

  • I wanted to play D&D for a while, but after watching a couple videos, it's seems a bit taxing to try and be a DM... I mean all the imagination you have to bring to the table and let others see the light of what you want them to see... I don't think I wanna be a DM. Game sounds a bit difficult to get a hang of, and I would like to play it with people that know what their doing, but I doubt I have any friends that do, lol.

  • @Tilearian check out your local gaming shop and you can probably find a group playing. just see if they'll let you sit in and watch.

The other option is just go buy a core rule book(players for d&d) and read through it.

It'll seem greek at first, but just walk though generating a character, and you'll get a good idea about the game.

And you might find out that your friends to game, they just don't talk about.it.

be your own person, and give it a whirl. you might be surprised.

  • First of all, I LOVE Dming, we are out there. Also I cant be the only female DM there is.

  • @princesshyrule dang haven't had a female dm in years. kudos to you darlin, keep gaming.

  • What if by chance you want to play? Once you DM how do you go back to playing, thats like becoming a rock star going on tour with a million groupies and then going back to your wife, jesus christ man you can never go back to your wife!!

  • @Tubbins82 Yeah ya can. just because you have groupies, don't mean ya do anything with them. As far as switching back and forth. been doing that for years. Love to play and love to gm. Just getting back into it seriously.

  • God damm, I just wish I had someone to play with

  • I was 12 when I first played D&D.

  • @MegaVergan i think a lot of us were back in the day.

  • @refsocrd1 Yeh.....well back in the day for me was 2009.

  • I wish I could find a local Tabletop game

  • One of the DMs at my school says he's only heard about one that didn't like it AND has played it -- at the college I go to.

  • @WolfAttackFromSpace Jesus you are one dumb mutherfucker... Now get back to cleaning the dog shit off my street, otherwise I'll complain to your manager and you'll be out of the highest paying job you'll ever hold....

  • BTW, really great video, looking forward to watching the rest. I relocated to Amsterdam and trying to find a group has been a REAL chore! I'm dying to get my 1st ed campaign running again.

  • @WolfAttackFromSpace Shithead, "99.9.9.9.9.9.9.999999.9.9.9.9.9.9.% " of any group of people do not look like Vin Diesel, only Vin looks like Vin, so your point is just as inane....

  • 4th Ed is really just Warhammer Quest with more rules... I would not call this 'roleplaying' in any traditional sense of the term. Aside from just reading crap out and rolling some dice, I'm not sure if a DM is even needed anymore....

  • @WolfAttackFromSpace id rather not...also in the video, he's married...hence, being laid. you're argument is now invalid. gtfo and go shoot yourself

  • @WolfAttackFromSpace I never said they did, im just saying it's possible that people who DO work out, stay fit AND have lives DO/CAN play DnD, so don't be a stereotypical douche bag...oh wait you already are.

  • I need players.. and they need a gm... sooo.. I'm moving to NY..

  • @WolfAttackFromSpace FYI, vin diesel plays DnD...hes rich as fuck...built like a truck...and im assuming doesn't smell like shit, but say that to his face and see what he does to yours :) sstop with the fucking stereotypes you fucking prick

  • I love being DM it's as fun as playing for Me, creating worlds and mapping out dungeons. If you have never been DM you are missing out on the fun.

  • @WolfAttackFromSpace Just because they aren't like you doesn't mean you are superior. Get off your pedestal.

  • has anybody ever attempted a modified version of D&D that involves more of a science fiction setting?

  • @TheYella20 There are quite a few of them. D20 Modern, Babylon 5 D20, and there is a Star Wars D20, all of which are based upon the D&D system.

  • @TheYella20 yeah, it was called spell jammer in 2e. with the current itteration(d20) there are dozens of games in the sci-fi setting.

Most of the d20 stuff sucks from a mechanic side but the ideas behind them are pretty cool. I usually just mod it to another system and roll out.

  • Im a geek, although I try not to make it too obvious. I dont play D&D but I totally would given the opportunity.

  • This video is awsome...I am addicted to dming our group of just six people and has two dm's and I can hardly wait to get into that dms chair when I am away from it. Sounds like you overcame great objections too get your group two work Kudos and keep playing

  • While i love Dungeons and Dragons lore...i never really got into the board game aspect.....i really just stick to Video game DnD....Neverwinter nights, baldurs gate, Icewindale, etc....

    Love it!..

  • i just started playing d&d 6 monthes ago, and love playing it!!!!! i wish i would have played earlier.

  • I've never played Dungeons or Dragons and I never will, but this was a cool documentary, thanks for posting.

  • whoop for david bowie poster!

  • Where'd you get the cool miniatures at 6:57?

  • @cavalier973 the two dark green ones were fimir figures from heroquest.

  • ok befor people keep on posing bad comments on dungeons and dragons why ? its not a nerdy game its just a game no different to cod halo and all that it just doesn't have a screen for you to show HIGH DEF GRAPHICS and BLOOD SPILLING EVERY WERE its using your imagination what this generation has nearly lost dnd and books are keeping that alive if you haven't played dnd yet do it with a bunch of people who do know it and played and enjoyed it and i will bet you will like it

  • @TheBronf

The reason most video games dont hold up to dnd is that video games have a set game engine. unless the developers take a huge amount of time you will always be hugely limited. with pen and paper games you can do pretty much anything as long as your dm is lax.

  • @TheBronf People just hate on D&D because it requires a brain to play it.

  • @seahorsecowboys what is your vision of a dweeb ? i really wonna know

  • @TheBronf .....No worries mate becouse you asked here ya go >>>>a Dweeb is; A person who acts rather "obscure" or has odd tendencies .....an acronym for the phrase "dick with eyebrows," which translates more or less to ''loser'' !!.... a despised person, a socially inept person, an awkward, ineffectual person; specifically connotes physical inadequacy....hey i hope this helped ya there ''FOREST'' ?!.......C-ya !!....LMAO

  • @seahorsecowboys

    Why you watching this video?

  • Somebody needs to slap the shit out of that bitch. She sounds like she was a stuck up cheer Leader in HS, and guess what bitch you married one of those No life "Losers" so what does that make you!!!

  • just so we all know vin diesel plays d&d :)

  • not to be sexist but girls in dnd is wierd because the way we talk it is very manly and the last time a girl played with my troop we accidentally scared her off

  • @niceshotjones I've gamed with a lot of female players. I don't see anything odd about it. There is a increasing female fan base for rpgs.

  • @woodwwad its not really that its a bad thing it just makes me have to do a double take

  • RPG be it D&D, MMO, etc...... teaches one how to think fast, to learn teamwork, to try new ways in solving a question.

in some forms. as in the older paper, pencil/pen, & dice format. it teaches math skills are needed to get thru life in one or more ways.

  • yes 4 guys in a corner playing 1 game totally dont have ANY friends, and clearly they dont have 3 other friends.

who the fuck cares what people think, I would much rather be playing DnD with my regular group of friends and having a lot of fun rather then going to parties with snobs that only want to drink do drugs and get laid. Fuck them.

  • Whaha hard to find people to play with?

I decided to play, asked 10 friends and asumed 5 or less would want to play... Little did I know ALL of them wanted to play! So now I'm stuck DMing 10 people xD

  • I'm not a geek. I'm a dork. There's a difference. I think.

  • @jerosmith1983 On the contrary. I will add nerd in this conversation. A nerd is someone who is very into school and they don't get anything but A's. A geek is someone who is also into school, but they get A's and B's, and usually when they talk about stuff they relate it to a video game or tv show. A dork is simply a loser. I don't know about you, but i'm a geek =D

  • @unstableband Actually the dictionary defines a nerd to be: 1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person. 2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd. Geek is a term that refers to carnival workers who would perform disgusting acts, and dork is an annoying person. All of which are meant to be insults. School has nothing to do with being smart, Einstein was horrible in school.

  • @jerosmith1983 Really? And i'm sure you can find proof of this. Considering he was brilliant in school and graduated from college early.

  • @RukarSylvan Look it up. He dropped out of high school because he disagreed with the teaching methods. He also failed his first entry test into college. He graduated college early because he was brilliant. The intent of my post was not to insist that doing well in school does not make you intelligent, it was to imply that not all who did poorly in school were stupid. The post was in response to unstableband's response to my original post that was a joke. The whole thing is kind of dumb.

  • I hope Scott Corum gets successful. He seems like a really nice guy who needs a break.

  • my probly is nobody wants to learn how 2 dm ive played as a player 2 times in 4th ed and dm over 50 times haha

  • Quick Q. I was the dm and I had a lever that triggerd a trap further on in the dungeon. They pulled the lever and I told them it did nothing. they asked why was it there? so I wanted to tell them without reveiling it did something like triger a trap. how do I do that

  • @skelitalman3 you can easily come up with explanation that doesn't directly reveal a trap later on. for example, "After pulling the lever, you all hear the sound of ancient gear clicking and moving but nothing else appears to happen. Perhaps it was used to move or activate something that is no longer there. Perhaps the lever is a trick to fool adventurers, such as yourselves, into believing either great treasure or great peril was at hand. Or perhaps the lever is for nothing at all..."

  • @Spartan77570 thank you

  • That James guy is cute. :3 his gal is kind of a bitch, though. =/

  • If they didn't have friends, then who were they playing with?Answer that for me will you

  • 7:29 is so true... I hate easy runs...

  • I just started playing and I think when we have our first official game I will DM cause I am the only one that wants to. And if anyone has advice on making adventures please help me.

  • I have never played D&D and am curious to how the actual game play is, Is it anything like Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem in terms of strategy? (yes I know D&D fans might not like their game being compared to a video game). The thought of a table top version of those games seems intriguing and fun. I'm not an artist, actor, storyteller or even a star wars loving geek but a pure mathematical strategist and was wondering if those kinda people play D&D for that aspect alone?

  • I've never played before but I have a friend that plays with a few other people he's never met over Skype, which is a good way. They use something called maptools or something like that to see the maps. It seems like it would be quite fun so I'd like to try, but I'd be more into the roleplaying side than rolling dice in combat every few seconds. DMing sounds like fun, creating a world around your friends for them to explore would be awesome.

  • I'm a 13 yeas old and I found it hard to find people playing DnD 'cause everyones on the PC and video games. I've been searching. I can't find people playing. The hardest part is I'm a girl who wants to play but each one of my classmates just care about going out shopping and doing boring stuff. DnD needs better marketing now a days.

  • @bambronzo

Your best bet is to join Meetup.com or post an ad for players at your local hobby shop. Just try to be safe when meeting anyone. Good Luck.

  • gosh how i do miss the 10 pm to 3 am campaigns... -eyes water- NEED D&D!

  • @shawt192 i feel yea the other day me and my party started playin around 6pm and didn't finish till 7 AM it was quite a feat

  • @SuperMcmonster lucky bum! i've lived here for ages and still can't find a group to play with. i just recently got a tip that might lead me to a group. -fingers crossed-

  • Man, I love DMing!

  • hye great vid do you still play d&d i wish i new people that played it is hard to find people my mom and bro play though

  • I could put together an awesome campaign but I'm not good at being the center of attention so I'd suck as a DM.

  • Do you have to draw a gameboard? How often do you do this?

  • @mariesadler Unless you buy pre-made maps (Wizards of the Coast and several other companies make some pretty good ones) you will have to draw a new map every session (often times you will need more than one).

  • Yay, D&D! :D Makes me wanna start playing again.

  • This is too complicated. Ill stick to xbox.

  • Im currently making a channel to help struggling DMs

  • I'm a monster, RAWR!

  • DMING IS A BLAST!

  • Just DM'ed my best session so far. D&D for all!, JAKARU DEVA OHM CHRIST HAS DIED CHRIST HAS RISEN CHRIST SAVES AND TAKES HALF DAMAGE

  • Hell!!! i wanna be the DM

  • Real men play D&D.

  • i have yet to play. i am the only person in my group who is willing to DM -_-

if only we had a point system...

  • im 14 and i love playing D&D =3 (i am the dm like 90% of the time)

  • I enjoyed listening to your story (pt 1).

Good Luck & Have Fun (Gamer's Creedo)

  • you know the difference between a knight in a book and a knight PC? book knights will never try to take the crown from the head of there own king

  • Comment removed

  • I wonder how that poor "cool guy DM" can live with such a shallow girl and call it love.

    Hmmm...

    maybe she's awesome at cocksucking.

  • @whoopsiedaisy69 The like button does not do this justice!

  • im trying to start playing d&d but dont know where to start could someone please put me in a good direction.

  • @RaxynSword check my channel for d&d starting tips

  • @RaxynSword A good site to go to to learn the game, talk to others and look for games is enworld.org

  • @RaxynSword Red Box. Its a Good start, $20. then if you and your buds like it, move onto other kits.

  • LOL!!! i just bought the 2010 REBOX and if anyone can help me get started PLEASE IM me or reply..I am going to see if i like DnD and if i do i am going to start a DnD group in my town..we used to have one but that was back in the early 90's. it is dead here in NM haha.. well i wana be DM.. i love telling stories haha

  • @RTard48JRod what help do you need? :)

  • maby those 4 guys were friends with each other??? fuckign bitch

  • 5:17 is that person writing his character sheet in PEN?! What kind of nonsense is this?

  • Dungeon Master are just smarter and have more fantasy. That's why they do it. DMs RULE!

  • D&D best game ever!!!!!

  • D&D best game ever

  • Man I miss this game

  • funny how every one of them is sort of fat, ugly an abit strange

  • What? I swear I saw PeyJ on the right at 0:17

  • Oops, sorry. last comment was about a documentary, My bad.

  • This isn't so much about D&D as it is a character study of a few sad deluded people. It's interesting and I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong.

  • Hey Piczo!! What up?

  • "4 kids in the corner playing D&D "didn't have friends""? What the fuck kind of stupid ass comment is that? If you mean they didn't have stuck up kids with designer clothes trying to fit in kids then I would agree.. Otherwise NO. They're probably better friends then you are with yours.

  • @dovanian

Well you know they each have atleast 3 friends, and they probably don't care what you wear, so yeah, totally better friends :P

  • @dovanian If they were sitting with other people. Wouldnt they have friends to begin with? That kinda nullifies her comments. xD

  • @dovanian - In a High, Mocking-style voice...."probably better friends than you are:(..." HAHAHAHAH

  • @Backpacker1979 Lol looking at your profile I see your video and you're a guy with tits. Get at me bro. I may play D&D but I would kick your fat stoner ass.

  • @dovanian In a high, mocking-style voice...."Get at me bro".....Get at me bro?.....HAHAHAHAHAH

  • @dovanian Geeks can wear designer clothes. ;)

  • @SirSparklz Haha, yeah.... did you see the guy in the video wearing Versace glasses?

  • @SirSparklz

And fashionable people can be geeks. x]

  • @dovanian i play dnd and hang out with the cool kids lol

  • @dovanian

I agree with your comment. I guess the four kids playing in the corner were total strangers. And for his idea of a point system to limit anyone playing if they do not DM, thats totally idiotic. The games are to be fun, no one should be forced to be DM if they do not wish to.

  • @dovanian fucking agreed.

  • @dovanian sad that people don't give the game a chance DARN THAT STUPID RUMOR CAUSED BY SOMEONE WHO KILLED THEMSELVES OVER THE DEATH OF THEIR DND CHARACTER(that is how the problems started)

  • @dovanian so true. they are probably very good friends. not just surface friends

  • If you know of the Myth series and Dragonlance series of books, it directly states you are over 30 years old.

  • AD&D was the best version.

  • @ImoenOfTelengard

Thats true. OD&D and AD&D are the best when it comes to the game. Dealt more with the imagination & roleplaying & less on spending time rolling every action. Ex. Make a Dex check to see if you wipe your ass properly with the leaf... A 1? Too bad, not only do you get shite on your wrist, you also find the leaf you used was Poison Ivy and the muddy ground causes you to slip and squat right down on your own shite. Just as Goblins come upon you drawn by your cursing loudly.

  • I think that guys attitude towards club members who only want to play is a bit harsh. Not everyone want's to DM a game. Some just want to be players.

  • can someone help me about the dice they use for dnd? I know the names (d20,d10...so on..) but i cant find in the internet about the true meaning of those dice... whats their job? I think d20 is for attacking right?

  • @edvill82 It's not specific. They're just used to determine success in either more, or less easily succeeded situations. D20 is used most often, though.

  • @edvill82 d20 or 20 sided die is used pretty much for actions example you want to lockpick a door so you roll and if you roll high enough you complete the action. the other ones are mainly used for damage :D.

  • @Dnangel665 thank you, for that clear example. lol. i hope more to come. lol. jk.

  • @edvill82 no prob. I kinda new to this myself I have only been playing a year at school :D

  • Good video, than ks for posting!

It's the same with my group ... there is only one (except me) out of about 10 people we are playing with in differently mixed gaming groups, who even thinks about being the DM. But I like the job quite a lot and have control over when we play and so on, so I think it's okay :D

  • @davidc2468 The DM controls everything that isn't the Player Characters (player characters are the stories heroes, as played by the players). If a story calls for more characters then players the DM sometimes plays a DMPC (Dungeon Master Player Character). I hope that helps clear up the confusion. ;)

  • 8.29 and thats the main difference between 4E and all previous version of D&D.

That being said, i'm loving this mini-doco. Very Cool

  • meet up is great, I've met a lot of players off there. It is sad how selfish a lot of players are & not being willing to take their turn doing the work. Man, that is a great idea for making the lazy asses do some work. Good for you!

Running a game on the fly is just terrible.

  • lawful good mindflayer paladin here :-)

  • Great video

  • First of all, very cool Video. Im 22 and Im from Portugal, I started in D&D a couple of years ago and Im a DM. Unfortunatly there are very few people in my country that play D&D but there is a cool social network for D&D players arround the country. The Dungeon Master is the best part in D&D for me, since Im an artist I think that creating a whole world and mazes and adventures it can be very inspired and I think D&D can be counsidered art because Ive seen AMAZING things threw D&D. Have fun ;)

  • Chaotic Neutral Human Wizard here :-)

  • do u only use the board for combat or for the whole game

  • @thomasfisher24 You don't have to use the gameboard at all lol

  • Ive got a level 43 knight assassin. He has great hand to hand skills and great magic powers. I have the sword of doom and the shield of despair. Last weekend this fat fuck killed me. I hate my life.

  • @BigDumbJerk ouch

  • I appreciate the social element, but I'm actually flabbergasted that in the days of computers, 3D/HD graphics and sprawling MMO's, people are still playing this. Hey though....whatever floats your boat. I personally prefer to get lost in some sprawling 3D landscape, and actually see the enemies/monsters...but if others prefer this, great. The main thing as that they're enjoying themselves and having fun....that's never a bad thing.

  • @slitheen I play & love both forms. Computer RPGs are more visually engaging because you see the landscape & monsters around you but I think the drawback is that you are limited to what the programmers/designers have provided for you. You're at the mercy of their storyline and depth & detail of the world they've made. The theater of the mind, however, is limitless. When the momentum gets going in a D&D session you can see everything in technicolor. It's like reading a book to watching a movie.

  • @antpop1

Cool.....guess it just mustn't appeal to me. I'm glad that you let your imagination run wild in the games. I couldn't see myself taking to it though, tbh. Although I did know a guy who was a DM once who made his room really look the part....I mean he *really* created an authentic ambience. It would have been easier for me to get into it like that than in the stark, modern rooms these guys play in. Although that guy I knew spent a fortune making it look all medieval and stuff. :)

  • I'm a DM, the only way it's simple is if your a crappy one.

  • I love this series already. We have geeks here, but not social outcasts or zoo attractions. In general, they're cool, casual people who know how to communicate without donning a cloak and Night Elf makeup. I LOVE this. I'm totally going to watch the rest.

  • @princeweasel1

People who see gamers as uncool social outcasts should cast their eyes towards Vin Diesel....the cool, masculine, good-looking Hollywood actor. He played D&D for years, and plays World of Warcraft even now. The stereotype image of a fat, pale white guy with no mates couldn't be further than the truth in his case. :)

  • How long does an average game take? Lets say I never played before, but I wanna try this once when I have 4 friends over, how much does it cost , what do I need, what do I do,,?

  • @smokenfly514 There is a quick star guide on DnDs website with premade characters and encounter for those just trying to get an understanding. Thats a great starting point, from there go to a local gaming store and pick up players handbook 1. Read through that, and go from there. Ask ppl at the gaming store or use online forums. If you need anything else, PM me. Enjoy!

  • @smokenfly514 I just played my first session tonight. We played for about 5 hours, I but I was joining onto an existing campaign (they had one session before I joined). Had an experienced DM and several knowledgeable players all around. I had a blast, and everyone tolerated my incessant questions well, but I can imagine that having any more than one or two newbs in a given game would really slow down gameplay. I'd recommend finding at least one person who has played before to teach the ropes

  • ive been very anxious to DM

  • they used warhammer figs

  • i like dm its fun me and my friend take turns to dm but now we are geting other people to dm with us and they allso like it

  • All these people are very overweight!!!

  • Ah. Amazing quality on the video. I was/am much amused. :D

  • Amazing video. I love it soooo much.

  • at 8:15 would not play that kid's game. Ever.

  • DMing is pretty simple. Taking into account basic human nature, the players will hurl themselves (if they haven't killed each other first) at the first potentially gruesom death they encounter. The DM simply points them in the right direction. Try not to save the party from self inflicted stupidity. :) Its more fun that way.

  • @nknoval DMing is only as simple as the Dungeon Master makes it. I've been DMing for years and years and years and I have complex quests and lore my players embark as well as long campaigns and plots. If you want to make it easier for yourself (and maybe even your players) then so be it but you're not getting everything Dungeons & Dragons has to offer.

  • At 6:59 (sorry if this is a re-post, but I really dig this):::: I see a couple of HERO QUEST FIGURINES!!!! YAY!!!

  • AD&D is a great game indeed ! It's a lot of fun to kill goblins and share treasures but hopefully other kind of roleplaying games exist beside the dungeon crawling type such as the investigation oriented games. Anyways, the most important is roleplaying and storytelling which makes the difference with MMORPGs.

Long live pen&paper roleplaying games !

  • @LaTruieLaineuse Try white wolf games, they do a lot of that

  • I love D&D, I have converted 50+ of my friends that were non-beleivers and atleast a 3rd of those are girls. We have an epic campaign planned for the summer, we have 10 players and 2 DMs (which are twins) planning it!

  • from what site does he get those minis printouts?

was the blank grid printed out too?

  • Love it. Just the way we do it - adult, casual, relaxed, with lots of both laughs and dramatics :) There's nuffin' mysterious 'bout D&D, that's the whole & simple truth, and the greatest joy of it ... I won't stop 'till I die :P Cheerz all and keep on rollin' :D

  • i love that you've included brown people in the videos. keep up the great work!

  • @morlock19 lol, most random comment EVER
