100% true. I have to open the vent window to close the door fully. As for the ability to breathe, it is a marvel how you actually don't suffocate. I guess you can always just open the vent window if it gets a little stale.
What the commercial is showing is true, but the same thing applies to most cars. Most cars are pretty damn airtight. Not disparaging the mighty Beetle or anything. It is a hell of a car. The real cool thing about them is how watertight they were. They float well.
Some modern cars have electric windows that roll down a tiny bit when you open the door, and then roll back up after you close it. My '06 Mini Cooper has this. Kind of sucks in the winter when the windows get ice on them, though.
An airtight car is good for a couple of reasons. When you're following a stinky deisel for example, or a misfiring gas car, it helps keep you from having to smell it. Also, it keeps alot of the "road dirt" out of the car.
why wouldn't you? You can drive through fire! Or smoke some fire and hotbox it if ou roll that way. An airtight cabin is a good thing, especially for corrosion and protection of the interior.
LOL my 1971 is STILL the same way! To get the door to close with the windows closed you have to actually hold the handle and push it, not just slam it.
Whatever makes you happy, i can only say that a testreport in the 60s called the car toatlly unacceptable on the sole acount of lack of ventilation. I am not saying that lack of ventilation is a sign of poor build quality, but i say that it is a design flaw. Well yes, they did sell 25 millions of this strange backwards car..But , if you can accept swingaxles and rear engine and total lack of directional stability, you could also live with an airtight cabin, until your oxygen runs out, naturally.
I dont doubt that, i never said anything else, except that i dont like the idea of having an engine in the back, fueltank up front, and swingaxles...But yes, they were built like tanks...I said that a car without ventilation is badf, and that i dont see an airtight car as being a good target to aim at.
@meharidude "it doesnt have any ventilation...A car without ventilation is a bad car.." That is one of the most dumb things to say. What 2 things go up and down on a VW Beetle? The windows. And what do you get when windows are down? Ventilation. People with downs syndrome have got more sence. The car is airtight. It means good positive build quality. Its a sign of assured quality against leaks and wind rush noise. It means its well sealed.
Okay so why does all modern cars, without exception, have vented cabins? Because an open window gives draught and contributes to noise. Yes, you might say that an airtight cabin is a sign of good build quality, but it is also a sign of poor ergonomic design. Which is also why later Beetles (still the Type 1) has vents to ensure cabinventilation.
@meharidude They obviously realised the problem and rectified it. Don't forget it is a 1950's car. Most 1950's cars were mobile fish-tanks and sounded like they had gales on the inside at 60. Volkswagen were setting the standards for good cars and while everyone else were building heaps in the 50's, VW were making good cars to rely on. An airtight cabin was the least of your problems in the 50's. All you had to do was close the door with some more oomph. Hardly a serious build issue is it?
I wonder if Bugs came with a warning label that read "Warning: Spending to much time in the car with windows rolled up could lead to a increase in Carbon Dioxide poisoning do to lack of fresh Oxygen!
This also happens to mine mk2 and its kinda annoying coz when window or sun roof is open when you close the door normally (as you would when everything is closed) its sound like you smashed it and you are mad!
In either 1970 or 1971, Volkswagen put a little grille behind the back side windows. It's there to relieve the pressure inside the car. Not only couldn't you slam the doors, if the car got hot enough inside the window seals would soften and the windows would pop out. The grilles put an end to this.
The vents also were meant to stop the condensation forming on rear panels on each side of the window that caused rust. But somehow it made it worst as can be seen on later model where that rust is very common.
This is very true. I have a 73 and the now nearly 36 year old factory rubber seals still seal it tightly. It will close easy if you crack the window slightly.

My nephew's wife was a VW lover and had a beetle. One of the little quirks she hated was the windshield would fog up fast. Now I know WHY! LOL

@fjccommish not a flaw. good build quality. they also float.

@adutton428 But the door won't close. That seems to be a practical flaw. When people exit a car, most fling the door shut.
