  • Dr. Allan Miller conducted this piece the other day in a community college winter concert.

  • Czech Mate!

  • dayumm

  • True that, mvax. I played both the trumpet and baritone. When I played the baritone, the instruction, stated before all - including the trumpet section - was to play the countermelody. Our conductor lasted two years.

  • @1RJBUFF Baritone? No melody in a SOUSA March?? Good God, who hired him?

  • in the section just before the trio the trumpets overshadowed the baritone and euphonium which are supposed to have the melody....

  • PLAYING THIS IN BAND!!! YESSSSSS

  • @kurpplemypurple What instrument do you play?

  • @Naraku415 clarinet. we have melody most of the song!!! :)

  • Why's it say The Philip Jones Ensemble as the name of the artist?

  • @tthomaselli2 Because thats who is playing it

  • @Naraku415

I thought it was John Phillip Sousa, as the title of the video states.

  • @tthomaselli2 It is John Phillip Sousa ... Played this song in H.S. and unless they copied the name wrong on the sheet music it's him.

  • Don't sell yourself short in Canada. Your national anthem "O Canada" is superb! Out national anthem is written to a British drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven", and is equivalent to "99 bottles of beer on the wall". We did not even have a national anthem until 1931.

  • This sounds so russian!! We're playing it in our band! It reminds me of home!

  • I miss playing this in middle school

  • 4 people are soviets

  • @SquadalaBoi14 that could be true but soviet russia does have a nice national anthem i seriousley have to give props to that

  • I' ve been playing this march with our local philarmonic orchestra from Thessaloniki/Greece! I play trumpet! There are excellent parts for trumpets, not difficult but really amazing!

  • omg same :D (percussionist) cant wait for competition!!!

  • Love the Intro , 1st and 2nd strain :)

  • The Gladiator is a work by John Philip Sousa, written in 1886 while Sousa was leader of the US Marine Band.

Sousa had not written many marches before that, and none of them received great popularity. The Gladiator, however, sold over a million copies - a record for the time.

I've added this to my 1886 list. My playlists are made for the you, the public, 115+ for any year back to 1900 (and beyond).

  • You Americans are damn lucky to have such patriotic talent on your side of the border. I'm Canadian. We have some of the best musical talent in the world up hear, thing is, none of them do music like this. This is great stuff, very patriotic. We most of our Military music from the damn Brits. You must be very proud. Good on you all!

  • and whats wrong with us brits and our 'military' music? :P im a composer myself and have written many marches. :)

  • willcanaris@wasteofspace1234 Dear friend, all you need is the talented son of an inmigrant from the Iberian peninsula---like the US did.

  • @wasteofspace1234 thats because its Canada...

  • @wasteofspace1234 Thank you. I do tell you this I do love your National Anthem, the lyrics and the music.

  • @wasteofspace1234 You do have songs like The Maple Leaf Forever, plus a great national anthem. Canadians really need to take more pride in their beautiful country, and when they do, people will start writing patriotic music for Canada.

  • @wasteofspace1234

British military music is pretty good, though.
